I have had this amp for awhile and only just started to use it at gigs. Everyone else's review is pretty spot on about the pro's of this thing... maybe I got one of the defects. This amp has lasted for about 3 years now and the only channel I find myself using are the clean and overdrive channels (because I do not need heavy distortion). I've noticed that every once in awhile when I turn the amp on, it will have this feedback-reverb-like clicking sound that will not go away unless you turn the amp off and try again. This can be VERY annoying when you are just starting to play a show. You'll turn heads for no good reason. My band has a very "theatric" vide to it so silence is key. It's nothing that a simple "turn back off and on" can't handle.

Also, the only effect even worth using is the reverb. This is totally fine for me since I don't have a reverb pedal and I own every effect that I need that this amp offers.

Another Pro... if you haven't tried this thing out yet, PLEASE do so. The overdrive channel on this thing is basically what made me buy it. You can get a fat overdrive tone, or a very dry one.. Either way the overdrive is bliss to me. Way better sounding than any Marshall I have played on, but then again, a Marshall might be more reliable.

I would give this a low rating, but since I'm not easily bothered by the clicking effect glitch, I'd say this amp is pretty much a steal.

I've seen good and bad reviews on this amp, but this one works fine and I paid a good price for it, not a bad deal for a 212 amp that kicks out at least 90 watts.

    Unreliable.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

Mine is unreliable, you will be sorry if you get it. Once again, mine may just have been broken when i got it, but i've heard about these problems before.
Good idea for features, if they worked.
I could've gotten a lemon, but i've heard about these problems in other reviews. NOTHING works. First, there was an atrocious clicking sound when the amp was on, so i turned it off. Then no effects worked, and there was no volume on the high gain channel. Every time the amp is on, random effects kick at unexpected times. I can't even turn the effects on by myself, it doesn't work.

I love my old Crate amp. Even my monitor is old school Crate. Can't go wrong with these.
I own a 1983 Crate CR-212 (great- greandfather to the FW120 2x12). These amps have great tone, solid output and great sound. If my CR-212 ever blows, the FW120 2x12 is my next amp.
Crate amps have great sound for fair price. Only problem was weak solders. Seems to be fixed with Loud Technologies building them.
Lots of features, great sound, good price. What more do you want?

    A Decent Beginner Amp

    By Anonymous

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I've got the older version of the FlexWave, the GT212. It doesn't have all the extras and effects except for the reverb, but aside from that, they're practically the same thing. The clean channel is decent. It's really just a kind of standard, sterile clean sound, nothing to brag about. Course, it's better than nothing! As far as the rhythm channel goes...It can handle anything from really light blues to ZZ Top to AC/DC. I rarely ever use it.The solo channel is where this little beast shines. I run an ESP EC-50 with a Blackouts Metal pickup without the jumper on the back into a DigiTech RP250 (which I mainly use for volume control and the noise gate) into the amp. If you're looking for a pretty awesome metal tone for a low price, play this monster. I turn up the shape control all the way and leave the gain at about 4 and it sounds freakin' amazing. The highs can get kind of annoying, but this thing thunders when you turn it up.The reverb is questionable. It sucks, in my opinion. I don't really use it because it more or less detracts from the sound.Overall, for the guitarist who's a little bit experienced and is looking to play metal, this is a good starting amp. I'd probably never sell this thing.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp to use for band practice, so I'm not all of the time using my live rig for just a practice. It's also a good amp for jamming around with other guitar players and the bassist in your band, although with playing Metal like my band does, I wouldn't use this thing in a live setting. Live I play through a full stack, so this amp wouldn't really get me the live sound that I need, but depending on your genre of music, this amp may be enough for your live shows. I play 8 string guitars, so I needed a good band practice amp that wasn't too expensive, but was loud and could handle the the thunder of my 8 strings. I run my pedal board and rack system through this amp and it handles it well also. If you play Death Metal, Grindcore, or any Metal at all like me, this is a great amp to practice and write songs on and it's loud enough to keep up and be heard during a practice session with the drums. Good job crate.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

Just bought a used Flexwave 120/212. Features have already been discussed, so this is just a review. My amp came without casters, and the tuner does not work. Other than those two, I got this in almost New condition.Clean channel: Very nice, and appears to have a lot of headroom. Nothing special to write home about, but this was the main reason I got this amp.Distortion channel: Not bad, but not great. Gives a small variety of different levels of distortion based on how high or low the gain is set. Very acceptable sound, but kind of generic.Super Distortion channel: Gives more boost, and the highs can be annoying. The Shape knob, if turned all the way to the left, makes the sound very muddy. At about mid-point, it's a lot clearer.Effects: Digital reverb, delay, chorus/flanger: Blech. Pretty crummy, and they all sound digital. I don't plan on using these much as I personally don't like the tone they give off. Might use a bit of the reverb just for effect, but the Chorus/Delay are not that great.Extras: There is a Send/Receive jack on the back of the amp, but you need to buy a Y chord. Have not tried the external speaker jack, nor do I plan to.Why did I get this: I needed an amp that I could park at a friend's house and not have to worry about damage or abuse. And, this will work perfectly for my situation.I would not get this amp again if I were looking for a new amp at home.

I bought this amp about 2 years ago and have given it so many chances.... At first I thought I liked it but now it has a mind of its own when it comes to its sound and the built in effects...sometimes they work and sometimes they do not....sometimes they come on even when they are turned off... The tuner has never worked. And the pedal that came with it has a mind of its own too. I am very disappointed with this purchase to say the least. I would tell anyone to pay additional money and go with Marshall or at least a much higher rated product.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

The other guitarist in my band (as well as I) had a GLX 212 (well I still have mine). But he had problems with both of the GLX 212's he owed (oddly I never did). However the second time it broke down we were informed that they stopped making that amp and received one of these instead. The are less effects but I actually like they way they were set up on this amp. Not a big problem since we didn't use the much anyways. The big problem with the amp is the sound. This amp is much weaker than the other amp. I suppose they were going for a more vintage sound than the other amp, but, that doesn't work for us. Its not a terrible amp, but it isn't what I had hoped for.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

The Crate Flexwave is a decent enough amp to get loud with. It lacks a few things though. For instance; "immediate" call up of the effects you've dialed in with the amps onboard computer is not immediate. There is about a 2 second delay. Very frustrating when switching from a clean intro to crunch-time. Also, when turning the amp on, you've got to wait 10-12 (maybe longer) minutes for the computer to memorize your settings. I've noticed that to turn it on and play immediately means I have to endure the affects dropping off and on. These problems are not good. I can't imagine them being an oversight during production. So that leaves me thinking Crate just said something like "...oh well." Isn't the DSP the selling point of the amp? Well, it should work. Very uncool, guys. Having said that; the effects themselves are pretty good. Love the chorus. The overdrive channel however is quite muddy and the shape dial only adds to it. I'm not satisfied and I wouldn't recommend getting it if you're serious about playing with an element of quality. If I'd known the problems this amp has I would have bought a Line6 or a small Marshall.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I got this for X-Mas a year ago, after using a Crate GX-65 as my main amp for over a year. I felt it was time to upgrade to a larger amp with some effects built into it, only becayse I'm not a fan of using pedals. After a year of use, here are my thoughts about this amp. I'm using my 2006 MIM Sunburst Fender Strat with this amp and it seems to be a good combination with it, especially on the clean channel, where I'm using the chorus effect setting. I've noticed that the clean on this amp doesn't break up at all with the higher you go on the volume and to me, that's a good thing. It took me a while to tweak the Overdrive channel to my liking but once I did, I was knocking off some Blues riffs with ease and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between this and a tube combo when it's in this setting. Now for my favorite and that is the Distortion Channel. Crate Solid state Combos IMO, have the best distortion of any Solid state amp out there today, beating out Marshall's MG series and Fender's FM combos very easily. The shape knob on this channel allows for a wide variety of tones, ranging from classic rock to full blown Thrash Metal. My only gripe are the effects when used on either the OD or distortion settings. That's when IMO, they tend to sound a bit muddy, so with the exception of the delay, I don't even bother with the rest of them. The built in tuner however, works really well but could benefit with the addition of a mute switch for onstage use. Other than that, this amp is LOUD and is more than suited for onstage use and is built like a tank. I'm glad that I do own it and do not see it going anywhere!

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I had the Crate 120 combo for a while and it was a pretty decent amp, but while jamming on it one day at minimal volume it just blew out. I have never seen an amp blow out at low volume. Also the effects on the amp aren't that great, and the tuner is obnoxious compared to the previous models' tuners. My effects used to cut in and out whenever they pleased. Overall it's a decent amp, but it just starts to fall apart after a while. I am fairly certain this line of Crate amps just aren't built very well, which is unfortunate because the older Crate amps were pretty good. If you're looking for a cheap amp that is gonna get up to good volumes I'd recommend some of the Line-6 spider amps, they have great volume, gain, cleans, and effects, and in my opinion are built better than the crates. Hopefully Crate's next line of amps will be more durable.

I have owned this amp for 2 yrs now. I use it a little differntly than most people .I use it only thru the effects loop with a line 6 floor processor. I never had any problems usuing it this way. It seems the effects that some on this amp are not first class.but most serious guitar players will use some kind of processor. 120 watts thru 2/12 is alot of power. I also run a 4/12 speaker cab thru this. Using 6 /12 the head pushes them fine. get some good sounding bass that way. If you are planning on using an multi effects pedal this amp is great!! Just make sure it is a good noise gate!!!!!I repeat must have a noise gate

so i reviewed this amp a couple months ago and since i have noticed some problems with it and thought i should warn anyone wanting this amp. as i mentioned in my first review, this is the second one i have owned the first was defective and musicians friend being the awesome company that they are sent me a brand new one for a small extra fee. well when i got the new one it was awesome for the first couple of months but i turned it on today and all of a sudden one of the channels flat out wont work. the other 2 channels work perfectly however the other channel will not work at all now. i used it the other day and it worked perfectly. Since buying the amp 3 months ago it has traveled a total of maybe 10 feet, if that much, seeing as i have my band practice in my spare room. This is the second amp with a completely different set of problems, so its become clear to me that these amps were not made very well. I would highly advise against this amp unless you plan on fixing it pretty quickly. The only reason i did not give this amp 1 star acrossed the board is because when it worked, it really was a great amp.

      3 words: Best. Combo. Ever.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

Let me start by saying that I own a lot of combo amps. A LOT of unnecessary combo amps. Just a collection that I've somehow happened to attain in the past few years, not intentionally. So, I know a thing or two about combos, having owned and/or played thoroughly any and all Line 6, Marshall, Fender, and Crate combos (except this one, until now).I played this one earlier today at my local guitar shop and I can honestly say that the 120w Crate here is the grandaddy of 'em all. Bottom line.So many amps claim to be flexible. You don't know flexible until you've heard the settings on this thing. You can manage a flawless blues tone, and then switch immediately to the most brutal death metal sound possible. That is NOT an exaggeration.I can understand your skepticism, if there is any, because my expectations were very low before I turned it on, but my expectations were certainly exceeded. You should at least try to play this amp at your local music store, just to grant yourself the privilege of hearing it for yourself. It will make a believer out of you on the first note you hit.The ONLY problem with it is the lack of any really special features (effects and whatnot), but that's what pedals are for.Play it. Love it. Buy it.I know I'll be purchasing it as soon as I can, and the price on this this is such a steal that I should be getting one very soon.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amp in December of 2008, and I like it a lot. Each of the three channels on this thing sound wonderful. The clean channel surprised me when I first used it because it had an almost acoustic sound. The distortion and heavy gain channels also sound really nice. This amp has a CD input port on the front, so if you have an auxiliary cable, you can play your iPod or CD player and play your guitar along with it. It also has a port on the back that allows you to hook the amp up to an expansion cabinet such as the Crate Flexwave FW412 cabs. The amp has an onboard tuner that works fairly well, but sometimes it can get a bit annoying with the flashing lights all the time. The footswitch that comes with this amp works very nicely. You can switch between the three channels with ease. Depending on if you have the clean button pressed in, the amp can remember up to two presets per channel, which is nice if songs call for reverb and distortion for one verse and then just distortion for the next verse. All-in-all this amp is great for the price. If you have an extra $100, then I'd recommend the Crate Flexwave FW120HS Half Stack.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120 120W 2x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I have the GT-212, but it has the same preamp as this unit. This amp has really great tones. The clean is nice and responsive, and the distortions are fluid sounding with huge sustain. The only thing this amp is missing is the "in between" vintage blues clip in the edge of your clean. But you can get a Tube Screamer for that. We all know that if you dime the volume on any SS amp, it won't sound too good - same with this amp. But if you mic on gigs, you can't lose. It's tone is much better than its competitors in this price range (e.g. Fender and Marshall). Great job Crate!
