After spending loads of money this past year on vinage amps and guitars. My wife was getting really pissed at all my spending. As I looked at all my equipment, like God, I said: "This is good. Then the other day someone asked me what kind of half stack I had. It dawned on me. I had bought the Fender Twin Rever Delux and Fender Hot Rod Delux, (both are great amps), but I had no half stack. Going back to the boss of the house (my wife). I promised she could get something if I could just add one more item to my music. Being on a budget there was no point in me looking at a Marshall, and the new less expensive model of Marshall really sucks. Then a sales person told me about this new Crate GLX1200HS. I looked at the reviews on this web-site, and just about all were good. So, I go and get this Crate, bring it home and hook it up. WOW! This thing blew me away on the sound quality. Keep in mind that my Fender tube amps don't get any better on clean. This Crate has effects (I don't use those because I use pedals), three chanels-Solo, Rhythm, and Clean. When it says clean, this amp is clean. I steped on my Screamin Blues pedal, and the DS-1 distortion, you medal players will love the dirty sounds this puts out. Then I tried the delay and Chorus. This amp sounded great on any pedal. The 4X12 cabniet is only 54lbs, the amp head 29lbs. The only thing I would reccomend is a noise gate ran through your loop on the back of the amp. Crate seems to hiss more than other amps. I could keep on going but I won't. If your short on money, play at mid size places, BUY THIS AMP, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY. It is great looking also. No it's not a high priced Marshall, but the people listening want know the difference. Only true music geeks would hassle you. I guess I am just not that geeky and I have played for 40 years.

I wanted a decent amp that was big enough to get extremely loud and that had dual channel distortion. I went ahead and bought this amp without really testing it out and found it to be a real piece of shit. Basically what happens is if you turn the dual distortion on, and try to turn your amp up loud, it has a very bad bass distorted sound. I know its not my guitar, because I spent 2 grand on it. I highly recommend you not buy this amp, unless you are playing at a sane level.

Theres no doubt about it. This is the best amp for the price. I bought this amp for Christmas and I LOVE IT. The sound is crisp, the solo channel SCREAMS and is great for metal, and I love the built in tuner and DSP effects. There is a bit of fuz when you turn it up REALLY loud but thats ok. If you are on a tight budget and are looking , BUY THIS AMP, YOU WONT REGRET IT!

Best amp for the money, hands down

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This amp is THE best for the money, there is no second guessing it. The crunch that it provides is some of the best I've ever heard, and the clean channel is just as good. The only complaint is the onboard effects, they aren't very versatile, but the reverb on it is GREAT, and it more than makes up for it. However, the normal dirty channel doesn't have too much gain, so I pretty much just use the boost channel for all my distorted needs. Great amp, best for the money, GET IT.

THIS AMP IS AWESOME

By Tim Parsons

from ALGONQUIN, IL

I just received this amp and have'nt stop playing with it yet. It has all the effects you could want, high gain, which I like and an awesome low end crunch on the rhythm setting. This is my first half stack and I have no regrets as of yet. Great value and price. This one goes to eleven

Amazing

By LesPaulMan451

This amp is simply amazing, and is definatly worth what you pay for it. The footswitch is great and gives very easy access. The effects added into the amp are completly mind blowing. The Rhythmn channel is excellent with everything you throw at it. With the overdrive channel going it shows you what this amp is really made of. And the clean channel. All I can say is WOW. This is the crispest and cleanest sound I have heard. This amp is awesome and is a great buy.

I have a Fender Deluxe 90 DSP combo (which I just love! - see review), and a Marshall MG 30 DFX combo (which is way overpriced - see review), but this is the amp I use to get back at my neighbors! I tried the Marshall MG 100 HDFX 1/2 stack, but I brought this baby home instead, and I'm glad I did! It cost a little more, but it has much better features, it sounds great, and seems very well made. It looks really cool too! (sorry Marshall). I have the slant cab, but I'm going to pick up a straight cab soon because my neighbors deserve nothing but the best!(Grin).

Not Pleased

By Rob-2gAGz

This was not a very good amp. It might sound good to you if you have only been play 5 or 6 years. Built in effects were useless, the tuner wasnt acurate enough. The who foot switch config was confusing. It sounded like a big fuzz box... Sound is very 1 dimentional... Meaning you have to stand right in line with it to hear it.

Played a lot...

By LostGuitarist

I've been playing a lot of rock/hard rock/heavy metal for quite a few years now, and I've played through an insane combination of gear. But I have to say, that for the size and price of this amp, you get a LOT more than you pay for. I've always been a fan of Crate and their distortions and stacks. In my opinion the rate higher than any other brand in clarity, especially at high volumes. The biggest arguement I hear on here is regarding the volume. All you need to do to fix that is pop new speakers into the cab or get another cab. This sucker will do what you need it to.

I put it to the test

By Rock on-tt_ez

After owning this Crate for several months I decided to write a review. First of all. There is not another amp on the market with this low of a price tag and sounds as good. The clean is great, the solo rocks, the rhythm can be used for what ever. The half stack alone is loud and a person playing average size venues wouldn't need any more of an amp. You really should mic it through your PA system. Not being happy with just one cab, I bought another 4X12 cab. This is no BS, I speak the truth. When I hooked the two cab's together with the GLX1200H. In my room with the windows closed. My neighbors heard it 4 houses down. If you stand in front of it while you have it turned up. The hair on your arm's and leg's will stand up. I don't use the built in effects, and to tell you the truth I didn't care much for them. Your much better off with foot pedals, and a noise gate is a must. I would go with the Boss noise suppressor 2. Country, blues, classic rock, even metal, this amp and cabs will do you well. Now I can't tell you that it will last for years to come. This is yet to be seen. However, the damn thing is priced so cheap you could almost afford to buy one every year. For the record. I'm no rookie, have several vitage amps along with Gibson Les Paul Classic, American Fender Strat, Tele, Ibanez semi hollow body. If your on a budget, hell, if you just want a half stack or full. Give this a try. After all, if you buy it from Gutiar Center or Musicians Friend. You can return it if you don't like it.

this amp is awsome!

By infernal old guy

i bought this amp about 6 months ago and i love it! the clean channel is good, the distortion on the rhythm channel is ok, but the solo channel is insane! i can feel my soul jump right out of my body! no seriously, its really good. the built in effects are ok, but not great. if you want good effects, you will have to add those seperately. this amp is great, especially for this price.

This amp is perfect - value, features, quality - all perfect. I picked this amp up to play live, and it's crystal clear, even at blaring volume. I play mostly lead, but the bottom end on this thing has so much balls that I find myself chugging as much as shredding. The built in tuner and LED are great, as well as the DSP effects - though, I do have one complaint. The Wah sucks...but really - when does auto-wah not suck? Buy this NOW!

Awesome Amp

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I just bought this amp to play with my band, we play alot of metal, but we have alot of melodic clean riffs too. This amp has wonderful sound, and it will put it out LOUD! I love the 16 digital effects they are awesome I would recomend it to anyone. The only downfall to this amp is that is has no emulated line out which forces you to mic your amp when playing a show through a PA, just makes things a little more difficult, but this is still an awesome amp.

The best for the bling

By Stratdaddy-fro-da-diddly-o

I own this beast and first of all, it cranks like a MOFO. This thing is LOUD. I am too scared to bring it past 8. It has a solid bottom end and GREAT midrange. It never breaks up either. The cabinet is like a tank and the metal speaker gaurds are really nice. The footswitch is good, but it has recently been acting up (after about a year of heavy use). The head has smooth effects but the flange isn't very strong. If this was stolen, I would buy the same thing again.

Good Amp

By bouncingsoles364

from St. Paul, MN

I got this amp about 10-11 months ago and for the price, its a dream. the clean and rhythm channels sound perfect. the dsp channel is a wonder with my band. the only problem with the amp is the lack of sound and the solo channel. i have to turn this thing all the way up to get over drums. the solo channel gives a huge buzz, even at minimal volume. I recommend buying a pedal if you need heavier distortion. all in all, its the best thing ive played. Go buy one!!

Depends on what you need

By Matthias

See all my reviews

This amp is great for certain things, the solo channel is excellent with an insane amount of gain. It's one drawback is that there aren't many tone shaping options with this channel. The rhythm channel is decent, but the gain level is a bit of a joke, and mediocre at best. Compared to typical Crate amps, this distortion level is kind of shameful. For a really crisp, raunchy rhythm distortion you'll need a Boss Metal Zone, but that creates its own problems because then when you want to switch to the solo channel you have to disengage the metal zone unless you like unintelligible, muddy, buzzing tones. The clean channel takes a bit of work to perfect, but it can afford you some sparkling highs and thumping lows with the right tweaking. The effects are a lot of fun for just jamming, but they're a bit impractical for live use. I like to use a little reverb at all times and this amp has no seperate reverb control so switching from an effect back to just reverb is impossible on stage. For live use this amp can do you justice if you work with it a little bit, but using it at home for jamming and practicing chops is where the amp really shines. It just doesn't quite have the push you would expect from a half stack and the sound doesn't carry very well. There is only one speaker out on the head so you can't get two cabinets to rectify this problem. If you want a half stack to jam on at the house then this amp is for you, but if you are a serious gigging musician just know you're going to find it necessary to put some pedals in your aresenal for great live use. In a live setting the onboard effects are obsolete for me, except for the reverb, which is given in generous amounts. This amp is a lot of fun but I would suggest playing on one first before you buy it.
