I love the v-series for their tone and value. I have 2 Crate V16 combos and 1 V32 Head. So I was interested to check out the new black v33. The basic features are the same as the V32 but adds an additional (8ohm only)speaker extension out. And a better defined effects loop. It has two channels, clean and overdrive. It also has a 10db mid boost and presence with reverb. The improvements over the previous are smoother switching between the two channels via the footswitch (not included). The reverb seems to be better and very prominent even set at 3. The cleans are great on this amp as you may know, really nice chime, with a lot of headroom that can push any 412 cab. Here is the downside to this amp. The overdrive channel is muffled or dark sounding compared to the clean. No amount of eq can help, its like turning the guitars tone from 10 down to 2, no top end. I've dime the treble on the shared channel eq but no luck. Finally I put my MXR eq in the loop and boosted the treble, that finally worked to match the cleans chime about 90%. Lets be honest for just the clean setting this thing is worth every penny its bigger and smoother than the previous model, and although you get no footswitch and you need to work with the overdrive sound, its still a great buy for that all tube sound. If you're not satisfied, the next best value is the Peavey Classic 30 head in 16ohm only out, Good Luck.

    Great starter amp!

if your not a pro, this amp is for you !!
This amp is a great starter amp! It has two Issue's ! the clean channel has a Hiss! But I found, if you change the 3rd reamp tube , from 12ax7 to a 12au7 or 12at7 the hess go's away! As for the gain !
It's real Muddy, to fix this, Mode it! use the Soldano sol 100 mode kit ! then this amp comes ALIVE !!!

    Deal of the century

    By strat_lover

I simply could not refuse this deal. I got it for $180 at a clearance price. First of all, the first thing I removed was the tubes. I don't like Sovtek. Now they have JJ Electronics. After the change, the clean channel is to die for. It is warm and has sparkle. It also takes pedals very well. The overdrive channel is a different story. It is a bit muddy but if you lay off the bass, mids at 2 o clock and treble is full... You can get a nice crunchy tone. It is also very fat. Really good for classic rock and blues. Don't let the 33 watts fool you. It is very loud. The only drawback is it does not come with a footswitch. I recommend buying it. Overall, I am happy with this amp. I hope that it will last.

    An excellent deal!

Don't buy this for the overdrive---it's not there. Buy it for the EXCELLENT clean channel as an all-tube foundation for whatever pedal you park in front of it. My Metal Muff sounds KILLER through this amp! Oh yes, and I also bought the matching 2X12 cabinet. This combo rocks a lot bigger than the 33 amps advertised. It's plenty for small gigs and even larger if mic'ed. At this price, jump on this deal if you want all-tube tone on the cheap. It's like a best-kept secret, I may buy another for my backup!

    Absolute Rock!

I bought this at clearance price. I LIKE the dirty channel. I noticed that chorus isn't great with Presence. The 33W sound is THE sound that has led Rock music to where it is today. I have 3 other Amps, 5W, 30W Taxi and 120W Peavey. The clean channel is close to the Peavey Deuce. But the Dirty channel is very Marshallish in tone, IMO. The preamp is rather effective even at 2-3 setting, that is all you need. For years I have pined for this sound. I've lived in the world of imitation. I have not opened this Amp. Hopefully I won't have to until I change out the tubes. But the tubes are holding up OK, I thought they might have to go at first. I'm not big on reverb, but its there. I've read the clean channel emulates VOX. This may be the case. Its not my cup of tea. People say the gain channel is dark. I don't see it. I have a DOD Stereo crossover EQ and that pushes open the tone on this channel. It sounds like REO Speedwagon's Keep On Rollin. It's GREAT tone. The head is great for bedroom and/or studio. It may not sustain road abuse. It's made in China afterall. But if you need a head with THAT tone and don't want to spend 1 Grand, this is it.

    Unbelievable value!

    By swifty-NF4LK

I bought the V33H and a pair of V212B cabinets a couple of weeks ago. This was an incredible deal. The amp really shines on the clean channel, the gain channel is nice too, but it is not really my style of sound. Excellent reverb. Only one input, but I don't need 2 so it is working great for me. You can really rock this house with this one! Jump on it!

This amp is average at best. It has an ok clean channel but the drive is not very good. A good buy if your trying to save a few bucks.

    A little bluesy firebreather

    By Rose

    from Burlington, NC

I've had this amp since November of 2007, so I think it's safe to say the honeymoon is over. I run this head through an open back Avatar 212 cab with a Celestion V30 and G12H30, and have also been blown away by the awesome cleans and reverb of this amp. I too was disappointed in the lackluster OD channel until I tried diming the Channel Volume and adjusting the gain knob to taste. I find I get a really warm OD with plenty of bite by adjusting the CV to at least 3 o'clock and and setting the Gain to about 9 o'clock with the presence switch in. It is a huge, wall of sound tone through my 212, and quite loud too. Very smooth and violin-like ala Joe Banamassa and Eric Johnson, even more so when pushed by my Xotic RC Booster. Also, with the CV turned up high, you can hear a lot of hiss coming from the amp, but this is something I've experienced with most tube amps when you crank them, and you can't hear it when you're playing anyway. All in all, I still love this amp. It's plenty loud for gigging and boasts awesome tone for minimal cash.

    Good amp, takes work

    By BooDaddy-RK_SW

I bought this a little while back and run it through the Palomino 2x12 cab. The clean channel is great. The gain channel leaves a lot to be desired. When playing through the gain channel it sounds very muffled and fuzzy - not even interesting, just plain bad. You can not use the gain channel without a pedal that allows you some EQ. I use a Diaz Texas Ranger and boost the mids and it makes a world of difference, although I still have not been able to get the tone I want. What I have done is run everything through the clean channel and use an overdrive pedal. With this I have been able to get good tone. The reverb is serviceable. I play mostly blues and blues-based rock. This amp is perfect for it. It's simple, ans with a few pedals, you are god to go. If you play metal or shred this is not your amp. It has plenty of volume for most clubs. It is not a beedroom practice amp.Overall, the sound is warm and the cleans are nice and clear. It does take well to pedals, and it does not weigh a ton. If you want tube tone and can't or won't spend a lot, then this is your amp. You will be pleased with it as long as you do not try to make it do what it can not do. Blues, classic rock, or country players will be happy with this amp.
