Ok here it is in a nutshell. This is a 50 watt class AB all tube amp with a real nice Crate speaker (Tone Tubby style)and "Ruby" brand 6L6 power amp tubes (haven't looked at the pre amp tubes yet as they sound good and I'm not gonna change em yet) Being 6L6's it is voiced after the "American sound" say Fender. The rest of the "V series" amps are "British" voiced and have their typical tube set up(EL84)say Vox. If you can find a Fender 50 watt tube amp for this price, grab it quick, but since you won't this is a dream come true. It has a lot of grunt and has a wide range of tones and edges you can dial in. It is very bassey which means lots of bottom end but that can be dialed into a clean trebley tone too. I'll bet money that if you heard it and didn't know what it was you'd never guess "CRATE" and with some mods like various tube selections, and a high end speaker mod like an alnico gold and a reverb mod (to tame it a touch as it is a bit much at higher dialings) would put this amp into the boutique amp sounding range at afraction of the price even with the mods your still under the price of a comparable Fender Hot Rod or Peavey Tube Classic. Just know that even right out of the box this amp gives you the sound that you've heard on hundreds of great Rock & Roll songs and with the crappiest of guitars it will blow your mind.

My amp was DOA. It made noise at first, but not anything good. everything was fuzz. And then it would cut in and out. I assumed it was tubes, so I went and bought two new groove tubes. They didn't work, it just made a different noise. Put the old tubes back in to test it, and it started smoking.Oh there was about a 20 minute time period where it worked fine. it sounded great, but the reverb didn't work.So basically...the tubes sucked, the reverb didnt work, and obviously something else was wrong as well.I talked to crate, and they set me up with a repair shop in Champaign.Good customer service, but bad product.

I had alot of problems with this amps sound when i got it about a year ago, but after alot of modification. Now the amp sounds great with my SG, I also use the Boss super overdrive with it. It seems that this amp when I fist bought it that it was a jazz guitar amp.

Wow!

By Tweaked

from Albuquerque, NM

I just ordered this last Saturday night, and it arrived Wednesday. I opened it up, plugged it in, and was wow'd by the tone. People have said that it is not good for Heavy Metal. I have to disagree. Just turn the gain all the way up, and it gets really saturated and chunky. And the clean channel is warm and chimey. It responds very well to my pedals in front of it, and also responds well to pick attack. The only reason I gave it a 4.5 for features, is it would be nice to have two seperate EQ's. Lastly, I took the footswitch from My Epiphone Blues Custom 30 and plugged it in, it worked just fine. So any stereo footswitch will work on this amp.

POWER!

By Brown Cloud Van Dam

This amp is really an amazing value! I was looking to upgrade from my little pracitce amp and looked at some used amps and came across (what I thought was) a good deal. It didn't have any features that I wanted (2 channel, reverb, effects loop, warranty....ect.) and it cost the same amount. This amp sounds amazing! I read some of the previous reviews and for the most part agree. The reverb sounds great at a lower setting. I have no complaints for the drive channel. For the money, this is a true bargain. Like the other guy said before me "you CAN NOT go wrong with this amp!".

Blown Away... almost literally

By Zach-tSGg_

This amp kicks some tail. With the 6l6 tubes it sounds phenomal. And at the price you CAN NOT go wrong. It should cost 4 times more. The overdrive could be a little better but I play classic to rock so I don't use to much gain. Also the reverb isn't the best but it still is really really great. Not to mention how loud it gets and the beauty of it. Overall this amp is the best I've ever owned and eqaul to those like fenders and marshalls. Buy it quick

Crate V50, Great & Nifty.

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

First of all, generally with music gear, you get what you pay for. But with this, you get a whole lot more.I have been playing this amp for a few weeks now and I am amazed with how great it sounds for my style of music. The clean channel is GREAT, absolutely smooth and rich, unmistakenly tube tone, which is what I was really looking for. However, the distortion channels are pretty average, so if you're looking for an amp you can just plug into and rock out, this might not be for you. But I just use my Boss DS-1 pedal and it sounds excellent. This amp is LOUD, and at this great price, there is no reason to upgrade from solid-state to tube, I'm glad I did.

2 hours DEAD

By Jeff--H_q4

from Willard, MO

I bought this amp new less than 2 weeks ago. Played it 2 hours at home. It started popping, hissing and cracking and then shut down and now will not power up. I loved the sound and was going to use it at it's first gig this weekend. What a let down. I've contacted Crate about what I need to do and am awaiting their response. I may just ask for my money back.

buy one!

By Harleymike

from central ohio

This is the best deal out there. I have a Marshall vs65r and a 120 watt Crate solid state with two 4x12 cabnts. This amp is like a combination of the two. Great clean channel. The overdrive is fine for me too, but some people might say it's not dirty enough. The only complaint is the reverb. It is so bad it's useless, use a pedal! I'm going to buy another before they stop making them. P.S. There are update kits on the NET to make it sound even more like a Marshall and fix the reverb.
