Ok here it is in a nutshell. This is a 50 watt class AB all tube amp with a real nice Crate speaker (Tone Tubby style)and "Ruby" brand 6L6 power amp tubes (haven't looked at the pre amp tubes yet as they sound good and I'm not gonna change em yet) Being 6L6's it is voiced after the "American sound" say Fender. The rest of the "V series" amps are "British" voiced and have their typical tube set up(EL84)say Vox. If you can find a Fender 50 watt tube amp for this price, grab it quick, but since you won't this is a dream come true. It has a lot of grunt and has a wide range of tones and edges you can dial in. It is very bassey which means lots of bottom end but that can be dialed into a clean trebley tone too. I'll bet money that if you heard it and didn't know what it was you'd never guess "CRATE" and with some mods like various tube selections, and a high end speaker mod like an alnico gold and a reverb mod (to tame it a touch as it is a bit much at higher dialings) would put this amp into the boutique amp sounding range at afraction of the price even with the mods your still under the price of a comparable Fender Hot Rod or Peavey Tube Classic. Just know that even right out of the box this amp gives you the sound that you've heard on hundreds of great Rock & Roll songs and with the crappiest of guitars it will blow your mind.

My amp was DOA. It made noise at first, but not anything good. everything was fuzz. And then it would cut in and out. I assumed it was tubes, so I went and bought two new groove tubes. They didn't work, it just made a different noise. Put the old tubes back in to test it, and it started smoking.Oh there was about a 20 minute time period where it worked fine. it sounded great, but the reverb didn't work.So basically...the tubes sucked, the reverb didnt work, and obviously something else was wrong as well.I talked to crate, and they set me up with a repair shop in Champaign.Good customer service, but bad product.

Blown Away... almost literally

This amp kicks some tail. With the 6l6 tubes it sounds phenomal. And at the price you CAN NOT go wrong. It should cost 4 times more. The overdrive could be a little better but I play classic to rock so I don't use to much gain. Also the reverb isn't the best but it still is really really great. Not to mention how loud it gets and the beauty of it. Overall this amp is the best I've ever owned and eqaul to those like fenders and marshalls. Buy it quick

A couple of folks might have got a bad one, but my V50 has been Most excellent! Have seen one of these on a video actually thrown about 12 feet onto concrete, pluged the guitar back in & continued to jam, thats tough! Mine has great power & can dial in any tone your looking for. Try replacing the pre-amp tubes with a high quality tube like a Tungsoil 12ax7 & that will clear up the muddy sound that some refer to. Speaker is fine! Don't waste your money trying to change it at this price point. A true 50 watt tube amp that kicks butt at this price''Get out of town, most my pedals are almost this much!! The Inside board componets are about as well built & good as your going to get nowdays unless you get into the "Boutiqe' price range! You could buy the whole Crate V collection for less than some of those way overprised Golden boys! So have no fear & just buy the darn thing & crank it!

Crate amp - Pushing a lot of air for a good price

Ask me a question

A real tube amp with real tube amp qualities at a reasonable price. I needed an upgrade from my Epiphone Tube amp because it wasn't hanging with the small arenas I was doing and I lost the ability to mic my amp. I needed something light and portable with good tone and I didn't want to put out a fortune for an amp. I have always been a Fender amp man, having 2 other larger Fender tube amps that were to heavy to take to small venues, so I got this amp.. I have found this to have a good tight low end without being muddy and clear on the clean channel. I use a little ts-808 on the front side for the dirty channel and it really gives it a sweet tone. Definitely worth checking out.

Crate V50-112: Tubes for Less

By Ace of Spades--Ia2R

from Montana

What this amplifier has: A HUGE bottom end - turn the bass up and its deeper than even most Marshalls. A versatile tone. A wonderfully smooth clean. Good overdrive. Reverb that sings. The kahonas to play a small gig. And if you need more power... The ability to attach an external speaker. The durability of a small truck. Beautiful design. A completely reasonable price tag - and you aren't paying extra for the brand name. Lightweight construction - I can carry it w/ one hand, and I'm 125 pounds. What this amp doesn't have: Distortion - It's a tube amp. Buy a pedal. Special effects - Buy a pedal. A long warranty on the tubes. A legitimate reason not to buy it.

I bought this amp brand new, thought the thing singed. I played 2 basic bar gigs with it and one day at a practice it quits and the tubes and wiring are fried. So you can see my frustration.

I had alot of problems with this amps sound when i got it about a year ago, but after alot of modification. Now the amp sounds great with my SG, I also use the Boss super overdrive with it. It seems that this amp when I fist bought it that it was a jazz guitar amp.

Great Value

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

These amps are not perfect, but they are the best tube amp value out there right now at the current prices.A bit bassy, overdrive channel can sound a little muddy, speaker may be not be adequate for the huge output of the amp, etc. But, when fiddled with, the amp sounds simply awesome for the price. Most of the anomalies can be corrected with knob tweaks. The desired clean/overdrive tones can be dialed in with the bass/mid/treble/presence/mid-boost EQ controls. The over-the-top reverb can be tamed by trimming the reverb level. When the amp is tweaked, it sounds pretty darn good.Check the schematic of this amp (schematic can be requested from Crate via email) against an old Fender Bassman 5F6A or early Marshall JTM45, and you'll see many similarities, including the tone stack right in front of the long-tailed-pair phase splitter. Marshalls are said to have been first based on the Fender Bassman design, so maybe that's why the sound of this amp is being compared to a Marshall. If you are looking for a terrific value on a 50 watt tube amp then buy this while it's still available. Also, consider the benefit of a 5 year warranty on the main electronics, 2 years on speaker, and (well okay, crappy) 90 days on tubes. All in all, great bargin!
