I don't want you to sound as good as me! Seriously, I got tired of lugging around gear, so I specifically went shopping for a powerful 2x12 combo that could drive a 4x12 cabinet when I needed it. I figured on Mesa...but when I saw this cool looking amp..I had to try it. 30 minutes later I was walking out the door with it. That was 2/24/2003 and I haven't played through anything else since. I don't think I ever will. It sounds killer right out of the box, but wait until you hot rod it. Paired with my Gretsch or my Epi, it rocks.

I've had my amp serviced 3 different times sense the time I purchased it less than a year ago. With fairly decent care I've had to retube it twice, replace the handle, and fix odd problems such as physical rattles inside the amp, the clean channel is very dirty, and every once in a while it freaks out and starts making this really high pitched wine while on the clean channel. The distortion on the amp how ever is some of the clearest I've ever heard. Every note shines through with the gain totaly cranked.

awesome amp for the money

By t-bone-AOhMf

from portland oregon

i have owned and regularly played this as my only amp for over a year and a half now and have had zero reliability issues, save the stitching in the handle unravelling (kind of embarrassing), and would only prefer self-biasing circuitry to adjust over the life of the tubes. Amp came with groove tubes and were extremely warm and creamy, good for all types music except extreme metal, really amazing to just sit and noodle, isn't that what it's really about. After one year, re-tubed with jj/tesla power and pre's. These tubes will get right to the point with a crisp bottom w/a little tradeoff from warmth, but still worth it when you pump the gain and step on your scooped eq pedal, incredible, huge ballsy amp sounds. if reliability is your concern, don't worry, just make sure you get any problem squared away with the amp before your return date expires and you'll live long and prosper.

Killer tone at great price!

By Owner

Anyone searching for an all-tube combo at a great price has found it. May be lacking some features like a headphone out and adjustments for the effects, but is sounds so good, you won't care. Tube sound at a solid state price.

This amp has extremely nice tube sound - the clean channels sound clean and the overdriven channel has nice tube distortion.

GREAT AMP FOR THE PRICE

By ED JONES

from TUPELO, MS.

I'm not a great fan of Crate amps but this amp blew me away and for the price I could not pass it up. I love the vintage sound of old all tube amps and this amp sure does the job.

Great versatilty in an all tube amplifier.

By Edward-z-n1H

Great clean tones that can get dark and smokey or sweet and shimmering. The high gain side can go from vintage hot rodded Marshall grind to Boogie smoothness with a turn of the tone controls. The digital fx only add to the versatilty of this sweet combo.

Get One!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I've been playing for almost 20 years now, 12 of those professional. Like most musicians I love playing and looking at new equipment in the stores and magazines and online, It should be called "Musicians Porn" not "Musicians Friend" Because We all drool over the pictures! Anyway I've always hated Crate amps and never even remotely thought about owning one until...I was in my current band and the guys were all tube! So, I decided to go all tube shopping since I was a hybrid digital/tube junkie. After drooling over many amps my buddy, the lead singer said I should check out the VFX5212 and compare it side by side to an Orange and Boogie, I thought it would be funny so I did it and it shocked the grin right off my face. This very same amp is now in my collection and I use it tha majority of the time. The Effects are noisy if turned up past midway so I suggest using them gently. However the cleans ARE shiny and clean, the gain is nearly the same you would expect on a boogie and I actually prefer this one now over the Boogie. I still feel strange that I purchased a Crate but I know I purchased a remarkable amp with this one! Thanks to "Musicians Porn" I not only drooled but purchased!

Great tone, somewhat reliable

By Jim the Fixh

from Toronto, Canada

I bought it used, with the FX loop "broken"
From the first chord it sounded fantastic.

The combo meant the power tubes suffered some microphonic resonance with gentle play at volume around Bb (in mine.) It was the power tubes - tried "Mesa" tubes (matched pair - 20% out is not a matched pair... they promised 12% out and the response to my complaint was each was only 10% out from spec.) Need an amp tech to bias the tubes (and mine had an issue with the Mesa Boogie GREY tubes for the mismatched "matched" pair.)

The FX sounded good when my amp-tech fixed a cold solder joint needed to power it. Shortly afterwards another cold solder joint started producing noise so I disconnected the digital FX entirely. Without that loop sucking tone (and a new set of tubes, because I bought it used) the amp totally ROCKS.

Bitter Sweet

I've owned the 5212 for about 3 months and actually played it for about 2 months... On the 1st month it was in the shop several times for noisy tubes and popping (I must admit I brought mine from off the sales floor of a local store so it was used and I had no clue of its condition). Since then it has been fix and is awesome. I think it needs quiter tubes and a not so noticable 60 cycle hum. Yet, outside of the negative... This is the best sounding 50 watt 2x12 I've played in its price range.

Rock-solid and unbelieveable tone. Crate delivers

By Deuce

from New Hartford, CT

Best value you'll find in an all-tube amp at this level. Even gives some $2000 plus packages a run for their money. Tons of tone, and you literally can not find a muddy or harsh-sounding setting. Everything from sparkling cleans to blues to AC/DC crunches, this baby delivers, and the effects section is VERY useful. Next to a Deville, the Deville doesn't compare. Both are great, but if you're loking for great tone and amazing versatality, go with the V-Series. I guarantee you you won't be upset with your purchase and the value.

Incredible Power

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This amp feels, sounds, looks, smells, tastes, and plays great. Basically, this amp is all around amazing. I've had it for about a month now, and I wouldnt trade it for any other tube combo in teh price range. The 15 effects are incredible. I use almost every single one. I think the auto-wah is the best, with the chorus/reverb in a close second. Anyway, Its great. Also...ITS VERY VERY VERY LOUD (yet it doesnt distort at all at high volumes).

Loud, But Spendy

I was playin on this amp at my local music shop the other day and I thought it was pretty cool. It had great distortion and a pretty nice clean tone. I didn't really like the effects but hey, what do you expect with built in effects. Some thing that were great about this amp was the distortion and the volume. This thing is loud! It could easily handle a band practice. The distortion is great for anything from Zeppelin to Pantera, but yeah it is a little spendy.

What an amazing amp.

I have played countless amps including many Crates and up until the V-series 2x12 50 watt combo I have hated most of them. But the amazing clarity of this amp, clean and crunch, is great enough to change my mind about Crate amps. The digital effects are great but I prefer to use seperate effects pedals so I could care less. Overall, this is an excellent tube amp and the price is very fair to the average guitarist. I will be purchasing one as soon as possible.

Great amp for everyone

By Monterey

I bought this amp about a year ago and I have had no problem with it whatsoever. It is a tube driven amp which really sounds great, even with its onboard digital effects. The effects really don't detract from the quality of the sound at all. The only slight problem is that there is a very small hum when the distortion is cranked at high volumes, but this thing is so loud that you will really never need to turn the volume past 4 or 5.I have used it in everything from small venues with maybe 30 people to larger shows with up to 300, and it has NEVER had any problems. The footswitch takes a bit of time to get used to, but once you do, it too is great.I highly recommend this amp to anyone who is relatively serious about their music and wants great vintage sound in a modern package.

The Answer to Loud

By WAS.SacredHaven

from Kokomo IN

I play in a small practice space and need something to hear myself while standing right next to a drummer. This was a perfect solution. 50 watts is more than enough to drown out a 150W ATV half-stack and a 350W Hartke. Sounds better than a Marshall in my opinion, a little more like a Mesa. My tubes tend to rattle at the frequency of C# or D, only because I bought it used and it was retubed with microphonic tubes. Sounds great on clean. Distortion makes me happy, but really depends on taste. DSP is just there, I never really use it because its a little noisy and not really that amazing. All in all, my kind of amp.
