OVERVIEW

Stereo power, programmable DSP, and vintage styling.

The VTX200S is a great sounding, 3-channel stereo combo guitar amp with total control over the DSP section and vintage styling. The effect section of the VTX200S is designed to take advantage of the STEREO power section and the two speakers to give a huge, spacious sound to your tone. Crate has created special stereo versions of many of the most popular effects on the VTX models. These effects add drama with incredible clarity and tone.

Pumping 70W per channel through 2 x 12" Celestion Seventy 80 watt speakers, the VTX200s combines great sounding analog with total control over the DSP section and with vintage styling. This amp is designed for the player who is into the vibe and styling of the V-Series, but wants up to a 3-channel analog amp with "tweakable" digital effects and the ability to program up to six effects in the three channels.

The DSP section includes 30 different highly-customizable effects including Reverb, Delay, Chorus, Flange, Phaser, Octave and Wah with bypass.

I bought this sometime between 06 and 07. Its likely the best valued amp on the market, bar none. I own the RFX, the model prior to this one, and both are very similar (except for the scoop feature found in the solo channel of the rfx and some quality improvements in the VTX series) It has served me faithfully since then. It definitely has it's pro's and cons, but the pro's far outweigh the cons. Where do I begin...the dsp effects are great, especially the full range of delay effects. Some of the effects can be a bit cheesy and weird sounding (the wah, the reverse wah) but other effects are great (chorus, phaser, and my favorite, the fully functional octave generator). The clean channel is fantastic! I typically play jazz gigs with a fender blues junior or twin chorus, and I need that creamy, bassy, smooth clean tone for these styles. The clean channel, I kid you not, comes just short of the 2000 dollar tube amp quality clean. The rhythm channel is ok. I typically use it for metal rhythm by combining it with a metal distortion pedal set to gain boost only. It also functions as a blues channel, but the sound is so-so. I would recommend a tube screamer or something similar to use through the outstanding clean channel if you wanted to play blues or classic rock. The last channel you have is the solo channel, or the heavy distortion channel. This channel is really, really, really great. Typically, solid state and/or digital amps can sound overprocessed and unorganic, compared to tube amps. This Lead/solo channel can give you some of the best sounding, most dynamic, saturated metal tones for rhythm or lead. You can play the heaviest stuff on this channel, from god forbid, mastodon, slayer, or B.L.S to dream theater or Kamelot with authentic sounding tone. I cannot express how great this channel is. You have to try it. Besides all that, a few quality concerns should be noted. The pedal absolutely stinks, It's broken on me twice and Ive had to buy replacement pedals AND specialty cables for channel switching. After 2-3 years of abuse, the distortion channel has been giving me some fuzz and crackling sound when I boost it, but thats to be expected after all this time. Also, because there is no on board noise gate, the lead channel is prone to some serious feedback issues, so a Boss noise gate would likely bee needed for this setup. Thats all I can say. The amp is a really great value, and in conjunction with a speaker cabinet extension, you have a fully functional stereo half stack for virtually any kind of gig imaginable. And for the price, it can't be beat.

I purchased the amp 2 years ago. At first I couldnt be more happy with it. The both distortion channels were great and the clean was amazing. About 8 months into buying the amp I had to replace the pedal 3 times!! Every pedal that I recieved the switches caved in, or just didnt work after about. So finally I have one that works but now my amp keeps cutting out on me. I am in the process of getting another amp, hopefully doesnt turn out like this one.

Great Value, and Tone!

Celestion speakers, useful stereo effects (except the dog-abusing auto-wah), loud as hell. I'd have given it a 5 for features if it had a tube pre and balanced di outs.As it stands, this amp can sound like a JC120, and is as versatile as a cybertwin at a fraction of the cost. Plugged into a stereo extension cab, I can't imagine ever wanting anything louder.

great sounding but not reliable at all

By kevin--EJDB

from London , Ontario

I first bought this amp two years ago since then I've had to have it fixed a couple times and have returned it for a new one twice, so I am now on my third amp and am having problems with it. Now this amp does sound great and does have lots of cool features but none of that matters when the amp doesnt work right. It's too bad that crate doesn't have the kinks out of this amp because otherwise it'd be great.

Go get one now!!!

By Lee-qUZgb

from Indiana

I bought this Amp in 07 and have had a lot of fun with it. I'v been playing for 42 years, and have bought quite a few amps in my day, but this one has the best features for me. And the right amount of quality effects , along with a good quality stereo sound. In a nut shell it's a keeper, and I'd recommend this Amp to anyone I meet. Great price too man!

this is an awesome 2-12 combo that is well suited for any type of music.at 200 watts it's plenty loud (honestly I have not had it past 2 on any channel, yet)three independent channels with full control on each mean easy tone tweaking without hassel.footswitch for easy control.the effects are accurate and there are plenty of them, with true bypass on the effects so tone is not sacrificed. and tone... this amp has amazing tone. best solid state tone I've ever heard, and I have played for 20+ years.sound better than most amps costing 2-3 times as much.all in all you cant get a better amp for anywhere near this price. buy this.

Incredible

I just purchased this amp. I originally had a 120W GT1200H full stack, it was loud but did not have the right tone so I found this amp amd tried it out in the store and the tone was incredible plus the effects add so much to the sound. Plus you can add a stereo cab to the setup. You actually get more than what you pay for.

Cool

By Andrew-9yWmJ

This amp is very fun to play with. I have played it over at a store with an Ibanez SZ320EX and it sounds pretty sweet, plus you can go loud and it doesn't buzz. I love the effects and I think that?s what makes this amp stand out for me.

Solid state Stereo Sounds Super

It is solid state, but it is NOT digital. The effects are, but that's a good thing. They include all the most popular and useful musical effects, reverb, delay, chorus, flange etc. Convenient knobs provide instant adjustment with no scrolling or tedious manual to read. The effects can't compare with TC of course, but they are stereo, which makes a huge difference. This is a very affordable and good sounding amp. Because it is solid state, it doesn't require babying like a fragile finicky tube amp. It sounds consistent from night to night, gig-to-gig. The included wheels are not terrible, but they are small. Most crate products I have experience with seem to be reliable, but they are imported, so I would suggest a little reasonable care in handling. Don't freeze it or boil it in your car for days on end then slam it across thresholds. If you treat it reasonably well, this is a good economy amp with easy-to-use versatile features. Stereo is a good thing. Way to go Crate!
