I purchased the Damage control Liquid Blues overdrive pedal about 3 months ago. Initially when plugging it in, I wasn't sure if it would be as usefull as I expected. Reason being, I play at my church and need several stages of overdrive for different applications. If that's what you need, this pedal should be combined with at least one more overdrive pedal. I combine mine with my Traynor amp's tube overdrive and wow- the combination is amazing. The amps overdrive by itself is somewhat weak and muddy and does not stand out. I keep the Liquid Blues on all the time to keep the clean sounds sparkly, and just kick in my amp's overdrive on top when needed and get higher end gain with way more clarity than without the Liquid blues. The blues pedal gives a perfect mid-range overdrive with the boost switch, so now I've got everything I need. And the opto comp adds the perfect amount of compression, not too much. Overall, the tone is beyond beautiful!
This pedal is definitely not a one-trick pony. It's true that this is great for tons of cool tones on the cleaner end, but I equally enjoy what this unit is capable of up through mid-range distortion. Pure quality from one end if it's tonal spectrum to the other. The controls are super simple yet are very responsive in allowing you to tightly modify your tone. Built like a tank. I was a little suprised that it's somewhat bigger in scale than I had imagined it to be...this is not a cramped little pedal by any stretch. I will defintely be aquiring the Solid Metal unit based on how much I love this one.
I really like the pedal. Initially, it breaks up at high gain, but once those tubes get hot...the sound is great. It has a good overdrive sound rather than a metal distortion sound. I like the optocomp too. It really adds good compression to the tone. I leave the clarity full on the pedal because I want the full tone of the pedal. Also, the bypass is really a true bypass, I checked this by hooking it up backwards, if you get sound, the bypass is true.
This is a review for the Damage Control Liquid Blues pedal.I have used this pedal with a variety of amps, from open-backed low-wattage 1x12 tube combos to 120W SS heads powering a closed back 4x12. It fits anything like a glove. It ought to be thought of as adding another channel to your amp rather than as a traditional stompbox distortion pedal.Sound quality is uncompromised. This product is rare in that it completely deserves the high ratings it will surely get as more people continue to discover it. This is no flash in the pan, it is the real thing - an excellent floor preamp-in-pedal-form that completely nails the low-to-mid-gain sound. It also does amazing warmed-up cleans. The Opto-Comp is pristine, and the "Clarity" feature is invaluable. I wish every OD pedal had the same.I use it as an overdrive pedal into the Damage Control Solid Metal, and on its own. No matter how it is used, it is brilliant. I look forward to adding more Damage Control pedals to my board.
This is really an amazing pedal. I mostly use it for my Strat into an old Twin. It just about lifts the amp off the ground! I have a couple of minor issues with the workmanship (the DC plug has been finicky, as have the LED's), but it FEELS very sturdy. I find it a bit bulky to take to gigs, but that sound is just wonderful!
Damage Control's Liquid Blues overdrive pedal is in a class all by itself. The price tag scare you a bit? Don't let it. Here's why: incredibly beautiful tube tone with ultra rich harmonic content and a voice that is just out of this world. Even in "Nuclear" mode, this pedal is sweeter than C&H Sugar. The build quality on this unit is "perfect"; I've never seen better. Period. Additionally, the tone of this unit sounds slightly compressed, which works brilliantly with tube amps. Spoil yourself and experience the unparalleled pristine bliss of the Liquid Blues overdrive pedal.
This is my second unit from the folks at Damage Control (the "Womanzier" is my first). The Liquid Blues pedal/unit provides an incredible array of clean and mildly overdriven tones. The Opto-compressor on the unit is magnificent and allows the user to really tailor their sound quite well. The unit features a true "bypass", so that you can go straight into your amp without coloring your tone at all. The unit features a smoother overdriven mode, as well as a spicer "nuclear" mode. The two 12AX7 tubes provide incredible tones and are perfectly biased for playing blues and blues-rock. I've found that the "nuclear" mode is perfect for lead tones...and tend to use the basic overdriven mode for rhythm. The unit is EXTREMELY well built...total quality. Damage Control is making some of the coolest gear out there!
