OVERVIEW

A diverse delay pedal with true hardwire bypass.

The DigiTech HardWire DL-8 is a delay and looper effect pedal that features stereo I/O with selectable tails and a choice of 11 delay types. Among the delays you can configure with the DL-8 are Analog, Lo-Fi, Tape, and Reverse. The DigiTech DL-8 pedal also provides up to 8 seconds of delay and 20 seconds of looping as well as functions like tap-tempo and more.

DigiTech HardWire pedals represent a commitment to quality and attention to subtle details. In addition to technical enhancements like true bypass and high voltage operation, all DigiTech HardWire guitar pedals feature rugged, all-metal construction, a wide, stage-stable footprint, durable, custom-machined metal knobs for a sure grip, and precision potentiometers that guarantee knob positions will stay intact.

The rugged, durable construction of DigiTech Extreme Performance Pedals is just the beginning. Inside each HardWire guitar pedal are technological features that serious players require - all updated and improved to their utmost capacity. True bypass preserves the purity of your original tone as signal passes through the pedal, and high voltage operation further protects your sound by eliminating clipping and other signal degradation caused by power drain.

With the high-output pickups found on some electric guitars, it's not unusual to hear clipping when playing through an effects pedal. This occurs when the voltage range produced by an electric guitar's pickup is greater than the operating voltage of the effects pedal, normally limited to the voltage supplied by the effect's battery or power supply. DigiTech HardWire pedals incorporate circuitry that increases the operating voltage headroom above that of the typical pedal. That means the HardWire DL-8 delay looper pedal can work with a wider range of guitars and is also at home in your amplifier's effects loop.

HardWire Pedals include the following stage accessories:
Stomplockā„¢ knob guard locks your tone in place and prevent tampering or accidental knob adjustments onstage
Pedal Switch Glow Sticker helps you locate the pedal in adverse stage lighting
Custom-cut Hook and Loop pedal board Pad to attach and lock your pedals to your pedal board

The Good: This pedal has a range of good, smooth sounds, some with a decent amount of personality. Everything from a rockabilly slapback to Pink Floyd to a perfect clone of what you just played are in there. Overall, it is a clean machine. If you're looking for a clean delay that never breaks up, this is your pedal. I think the high voltage rails are the main reason you'll never hear this pedal clip unless you intentionally overdrive it with an overdrive pedal. I haven't tried that yet... it could be interesting. Also, it's built like Boss pedals wish they were built. A good analogy of it's sturdiness would be when automobile bodies were built from sheets of steel instead of today's fiberglass and light aluminum. Another plus - two inputs (for your synths and the like) and outputs = stereo, which is the best way to hear how good this thing sounds. The Bad: As mentioned, it has a decent amount of personality, but if this pedal was a girl and you were on a first date, you might be a little bored by her reservedness. She plays it safe, never acts wild or challenges you. You won't get any kind of dirty delay from this pedal. Depending on your needs, that could be good or bad. I'd like it if the extreme settings were closer to bordering controlled chaos than the DL-8 can offer. Also, getting into Tap Tempo mode is difficult. It seems like if you don't release the pedal after EXACTLY 2 seconds, you don't get into Tap Tempo. When you do get into tap tempo, the pedal is rather stiff and resistant to foot clicks and therefore it takes awhile to get your repeats tight with the drummer. In summary, I give it an overall score or 3.5 because the functional drawbacks for a major feature like Tap Tempo are hard to overlook, but the sound and build quality are very good.

DOA - I couldn't wait to try this pedal, I watched the Youtube reviews and liked what I was hearing. Unfortunately the pedal made nasty sounds when I plugged it in, it was bad. I attempted to get a replacement but I'm told by MF that this pedal is discontinued. Digitech has a new line (probably because of the failure rate with these I'm guessing). Musicians Friend gets 5 stars and I would totally recommend buying from them. They always treat me well. They refunded my purchase.

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

Two minor quibbles and fantastic value.
Aside from a volume drop when looping, I can't fault this pedal. Ultimately it will come down to whether you prefer digital or analog delay sounds. I generally prefer the cleaner character of a digital delay, but every ear is different. In all likelihood, if I could find and afford one of the vaunted Echoplex or Space Echo units, I would probably have a different opinion. One thing the Digitech has going for it is versatility. The sheer number of sounds you can dial in is inspiring. I am very partial to the Modulated and Lo-Fi settings right now. I can get an almost keyboardish background shimmer when I pair a clean signal with reverb to it in Modulated and a great, killer Stoner Rock sound when I have distortion in front of it. The looping is limited but more than sufficient for my needs. Unfortunately the looping and delay are either/or propositions--something for future versions to include would surely be the ability to do both at the same time. I have delay on the Mustang amp I use--but the Digitech is sooooo much better and varied. This really is a bargain for the price. If you can't afford the Memory Man or the boutique models, I would certainly reccomend this one.
Heavy. Solid. Rugged. Tough. Thick. Inspires confidence and makes me feel like I got my money's worth.
You can't really find another viable option in this price range. Next stop: Memory Man with Hazarai, if you can afford it.

Hard to beat

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

I own all eight of these Hardwire pedals and among the non-distortion pedals this is by far my favorite. All settings are excellent and some sound absolutely fantastic, the Slap and Lo-Fi being particularly sweet among the lot. The looper is kind of pointless as it's only twenty seconds but who cares? The delays are worth the price of admission and the tweekabilty is spot on. I love my MXR Carbon Copy for all its analog goodness, but this box wins hands down in the versatility department. And, as always with these Hardwires, the build quality and solid looks are icing on the cake. Yet another nice piece. Dial it in.

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this solely for use as a looper. For the price I have found nothing else nearly as good. True stereo I/O, awesome sound quality are what sold me. The enclosure is rock solid, maybe twice the weight of a Boss pedal.Best looper in the sub-$400 range I've found, and it requires no extra accessories to unlock its full potential. If you just want the delays and don't care about the looper, try the Digidelay. All Hardwire pedals come with a nice rubber knob protector and some glow-in-the-dark decals too. Top marks!

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

I am not much for writting reviews however I am a 35 year musician and currently just doing studio work. I replaced my Carbon Copy for this DigiTech HardWire DL-8.I only use hand made older Marshalls in the studio and this pedal sounds so real comapared to anything else I have used. The CC is not a bad pedal but will not do what this one will. It is also dead quite which is a must. Easy to dial in and works so well with tube amps, really a bargain at it's price.

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

Never have I seen a delay with this much flexibility at this price. The quality is top notch and it is true stereo. That's right, true stereo, not just stereo out, but stereo in as well. The wide range of delay times is nothing less than amazing. The different modes are all great, and the 20 second looper? Get out. While the differences in sound between analog, lo-fi, and tape are very subtle, they are there. Very good mimicing of analog with self oscillation, it takes it a minute, but it will give you those screeching droned out noises if you want it to. Nothing beats a true analog pedal for that type of noise, but this one comes close. And the digital delays, are pristine. Absolute clarity with seemingly infinite repeats on tap. And tap tempo. What can't this pedal do?

It's a keeper!!

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm not in the habit of writing reviews, but this pedal deserves props. If you're like me and you've been searching for a delay pedal that doesn't add any line noise to your mix then look no further. I've had all the Boss's including the dd-20, I've the H2O, the offerings from Dunlop and E.H. and found that they ALL added varying levels of hiss, hum, and in some cases ringing to my mix whether they were turned on or off. This pedal has all the features I was looking for, excellent tone(especially in analog mode), and most importantly it's completely noiseless. (Insert sigh of relief here)

Comments about DigiTech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper Guitar Effects Pedal:

Finally i found a delay I can live with. I always felt the boss delays were so processed sounding. After playing with this a while I found I like it more and more. My experience has been that it eats batteries like crazy though. I have run it on a one spot even though it says its not compatible.

I have the Hardwire R7 so I was expecting a solid pedal. That's what it is. A rock solid digital delay that can cover most of the bases. Every board needs one and this is the best bang for the money.
