OVERVIEW

The power to drive your distortion sound, no matter the style.

The DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Pedal is what you want when you need some grit. The multipurpose Hot Head distortion pedal has flexible controls that let you dial in the right tone for your setup. If you want just a little dirt or you need your amp to sound like a raging stack, the DigiTech Hot Head Guitar Pedal can do it. Low and High tone controls give you the flexibility to boost or cut the bass and treble frequencies, the Level knob boosts the output level of your signal, and the Gain knob dials up mild to wild distortion. The Amp output runs into the input of your amplifier and the dedicated Mixer output has a cabinet emulation circuit that lets you run direct into a mixer or recorder when you don't want to lug your amp along.

I received this pedal as a gift, and the giver wanted me to provide some suggestions as to what kind of sound I'm pushing for, and the guy at the guitar shop recommended the Hot Head based on the description I gave.

I opened the wrapping paper and my first reaction was bewilderment. I would never have bought the pedal myself, so I was interested to plug it in and give it a go. To say the least, I am rather pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, it's not something one would use for thrash or death metal, but it gives a nice old school British metal sound. Warm bass, clean highs, and the distortion ranges from a mild bluesy fuzz to a Judas Priest style high gain. Definitely what I was chasing... and I think if it was teamed up with something like an Orange tube amp and a decent cabinet it'll do the doom metal thing perfectly. I've only got a 60W solid state 2x12 combo at home to play through, so I'm looking forward to the opportunity to plug it into a decent tube rig.

All in all - I'm very happy.

Ok, I tried this pedal out at my local music store and I liked it a lot, it was very versatile in my opinion. But, a local shop reminded me that EVERYTHING sounds different through YOUR amp. This is so true. So since this was so cheap, I decided it was a good deal. When I plugged it into my rig, I was very dissapointed by the lack of tonal range you could get out of this thing. Sure, each knob gives you a wide range for it's parameter, but really, instead of a Low and High knob, they should copy Boss and just give you one TONE knob. The distortion circuit in this is very good and I liked the varied amounts of gain you could get by turning the Gain knob, but I just could dial in a tone that I liked. So I'm returning it. I think this pedal is good for beginners (probably why it's so cheap) I'm sure I would've loved it back when I was starting out, but I've grown and my ears have gotten pickier. Instead I bought the Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde...totally worth every dollar!

Better than some others...

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've owned the Hot Head pedal for over a year and I'm still as pleased with it as I was the day I bought it. I tried it out "head-to-head" in my local music store against three of the other popular brands and this one had the best sound, IMHO, and it was the least expensive.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a pretty good buy. It has some major high end drive that will probably even crunchy up a bass guitar xD. Very straight to the point, fuzzy warm sounding. Not a lot of low end, unless you want to sacrifice some tone and distortion.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I first got this pedal for Christmas after doing little research on it. I just noticed it was a budget distortion pedal, and I needed one, so I picked it up. When I first plugged it into my Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt, I was extremely disappointed. The thing just sounded like garbage. I avoided the pedal for a while. Later, I bought a Marshall stack at a pawn shop, and just for kicks, decided to hook the pedal up to it. MY LORD WHAT A DIFFERENCE. This piece of equipment sounded incredible! I quickly concluded that it must be that this pedal just prefers a more expensive and professional amplifier. So, I must say, if you have a small cheap combo, I do not recommend this pedal. But if you have a mid range amp, I definitely would. It takes real quality for this pedal to shine.

    On second thought, Astonishing!

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

My first impression when I bought this nine months ago was severe disappointment. Harsh, edgy, just plain nasty sounding. After experimenting with it for awhile I finally gave up and packed it away, convinced that it was a mistake.

Then I got a Marshall JVM410h and after reading tips from the nice folks on the JVM Forum, I learned that the proper way to use a pedal like this is to run it into an already slightly dirty amp and use the pedal volume to boost the input to the tubes.

Sheesh! What a difference. Using this on the lower gain channels of the JVM creates a new world of awesome tones. The harsh edginess I experienced when I first tried the pedal gets rounded over by the amp's tube distortion but adds a nice, clear in-your-faceness to the distortion. Cranking the Hot Head's tone controls in different directions and adding or subtracting the pedal's distortion creates an entire palette of tones that are unavailable from the amp alone (mostly in the 80s metal tone-zone).

So now I'm thinking I need to get another one of these so I can set the two pedals up differently for different tones.

By the way, I already own quite a few nice pedals, some of them very expensive. However, this relatively inexpensive guy has no problem joining that distinguished crowd. It has its own character and does great things to tone that my other pedals can't.

    i love this pedal

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

ive had this pedal for over 2 years now, and i still love it as much as the day i bought it. its perfect for the types of music i play most, like punk and psychobilly, and its surprisingly versatile. its not very expensive but its a good product. the distortion is hard to describe, best way to decide if its for you is probably to go try it out at a store, but anyway i think its a really good product and its really inexpensive compared to other products that are just as good.

    Best Distortion For price

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I owned the classic boss distortion but switched for digitech's hot head. it posseses more features and more potential than any other distortion i have tried. it goes from screaming hendrix leads to a gritty pantera verse. people overlook it because of the company name but this is the best distortion pedal for the buck.

    Hot Head

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I run this pedal as a booster in my rig, i use it as a lead pedal for my 70's Dean Markley Spectra. I keep the amps settings at about a crunch, and kick in this when I need more distortion or for leads. This is a very versatile pedal, it can get anything from a little overdrive to a big thrashy metal sound. Its also extremeley durable, I've dropped it and once stomped on it so hard my homemade MDF pedal board broke right through. I would highly recommend this pedal.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

i got this pedal because i was on a budget and needed a new pedal. its okay, if you play classic rock or light rock. the distortion is kinda weak and not good for heavy stuff. i would recommend this to a begginer or someone who likes classic rock styles

    Decent Pedal

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a decent little pedal for the money. If your looking for some solid rock sound, I would recomend it. I play this with a Epi Les Paul standard and a marshal half stack. I can get some great punk sounds and even stretch it to some hard rock. About the heaviest you can get is a Three Days Grace kind of tone. I got this at my local music store, and would strongly recomend it for the guitarist on a low budget. My one complaint is that the wire to the battery stripped on me, so the only way I can use it now is by using the a/c adapter. But it still works perfectly.
