I received this pedal as a gift, and the giver wanted me to provide some suggestions as to what kind of sound I'm pushing for, and the guy at the guitar shop recommended the Hot Head based on the description I gave.

I opened the wrapping paper and my first reaction was bewilderment. I would never have bought the pedal myself, so I was interested to plug it in and give it a go. To say the least, I am rather pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, it's not something one would use for thrash or death metal, but it gives a nice old school British metal sound. Warm bass, clean highs, and the distortion ranges from a mild bluesy fuzz to a Judas Priest style high gain. Definitely what I was chasing... and I think if it was teamed up with something like an Orange tube amp and a decent cabinet it'll do the doom metal thing perfectly. I've only got a 60W solid state 2x12 combo at home to play through, so I'm looking forward to the opportunity to plug it into a decent tube rig.

All in all - I'm very happy.

Ok, I tried this pedal out at my local music store and I liked it a lot, it was very versatile in my opinion. But, a local shop reminded me that EVERYTHING sounds different through YOUR amp. This is so true. So since this was so cheap, I decided it was a good deal. When I plugged it into my rig, I was very dissapointed by the lack of tonal range you could get out of this thing. Sure, each knob gives you a wide range for it's parameter, but really, instead of a Low and High knob, they should copy Boss and just give you one TONE knob. The distortion circuit in this is very good and I liked the varied amounts of gain you could get by turning the Gain knob, but I just could dial in a tone that I liked. So I'm returning it. I think this pedal is good for beginners (probably why it's so cheap) I'm sure I would've loved it back when I was starting out, but I've grown and my ears have gotten pickier. Instead I bought the Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde...totally worth every dollar!

Better than some others...

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've owned the Hot Head pedal for over a year and I'm still as pleased with it as I was the day I bought it. I tried it out "head-to-head" in my local music store against three of the other popular brands and this one had the best sound, IMHO, and it was the least expensive.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a pretty good buy. It has some major high end drive that will probably even crunchy up a bass guitar xD. Very straight to the point, fuzzy warm sounding. Not a lot of low end, unless you want to sacrifice some tone and distortion.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I first got this pedal for Christmas after doing little research on it. I just noticed it was a budget distortion pedal, and I needed one, so I picked it up. When I first plugged it into my Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt, I was extremely disappointed. The thing just sounded like garbage. I avoided the pedal for a while. Later, I bought a Marshall stack at a pawn shop, and just for kicks, decided to hook the pedal up to it. MY LORD WHAT A DIFFERENCE. This piece of equipment sounded incredible! I quickly concluded that it must be that this pedal just prefers a more expensive and professional amplifier. So, I must say, if you have a small cheap combo, I do not recommend this pedal. But if you have a mid range amp, I definitely would. It takes real quality for this pedal to shine.

    On second thought, Astonishing!

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

My first impression when I bought this nine months ago was severe disappointment. Harsh, edgy, just plain nasty sounding. After experimenting with it for awhile I finally gave up and packed it away, convinced that it was a mistake.

Then I got a Marshall JVM410h and after reading tips from the nice folks on the JVM Forum, I learned that the proper way to use a pedal like this is to run it into an already slightly dirty amp and use the pedal volume to boost the input to the tubes.

Sheesh! What a difference. Using this on the lower gain channels of the JVM creates a new world of awesome tones. The harsh edginess I experienced when I first tried the pedal gets rounded over by the amp's tube distortion but adds a nice, clear in-your-faceness to the distortion. Cranking the Hot Head's tone controls in different directions and adding or subtracting the pedal's distortion creates an entire palette of tones that are unavailable from the amp alone (mostly in the 80s metal tone-zone).

So now I'm thinking I need to get another one of these so I can set the two pedals up differently for different tones.

By the way, I already own quite a few nice pedals, some of them very expensive. However, this relatively inexpensive guy has no problem joining that distinguished crowd. It has its own character and does great things to tone that my other pedals can't.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

ive had this pedal for over 2 years now, and i still love it as much as the day i bought it. its perfect for the types of music i play most, like punk and psychobilly, and its surprisingly versatile. its not very expensive but its a good product. the distortion is hard to describe, best way to decide if its for you is probably to go try it out at a store, but anyway i think its a really good product and its really inexpensive compared to other products that are just as good.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I owned the classic boss distortion but switched for digitech's hot head. it posseses more features and more potential than any other distortion i have tried. it goes from screaming hendrix leads to a gritty pantera verse. people overlook it because of the company name but this is the best distortion pedal for the buck.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I run this pedal as a booster in my rig, i use it as a lead pedal for my 70's Dean Markley Spectra. I keep the amps settings at about a crunch, and kick in this when I need more distortion or for leads. This is a very versatile pedal, it can get anything from a little overdrive to a big thrashy metal sound. Its also extremeley durable, I've dropped it and once stomped on it so hard my homemade MDF pedal board broke right through. I would highly recommend this pedal.

i got this pedal because i was on a budget and needed a new pedal. its okay, if you play classic rock or light rock. the distortion is kinda weak and not good for heavy stuff. i would recommend this to a begginer or someone who likes classic rock styles

    Decent Pedal

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a decent little pedal for the money. If your looking for some solid rock sound, I would recomend it. I play this with a Epi Les Paul standard and a marshal half stack. I can get some great punk sounds and even stretch it to some hard rock. About the heaviest you can get is a Three Days Grace kind of tone. I got this at my local music store, and would strongly recomend it for the guitarist on a low budget. My one complaint is that the wire to the battery stripped on me, so the only way I can use it now is by using the a/c adapter. But it still works perfectly.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is an excellent tube distortion pedal, turn the gain down for just the right amount of breakup, and crank it to get crazy! The only problem is that i found the amp channel to be too tinny, this was easily solved by running out of the mixer output and tone adjustments. Also my experience has shown Digitech to actually outlast more expensive Boss products, excellent quality.Overall excellent buy and great addition to any pedalboard classic, bluesy, biting tube sound!

    Pretty nice, Good value.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought mine used for about 30 bucks, I'd suggest picking it up used. I tried it alongside a DS-1 and kind of liked this one better. It's not a multifunction pedal, it is a distortion pedal. You get distortion when you turn the knob, gear-monkey. Turned all the way down it can be somewhat "clean", it depends on the guitar and the pickups (it seems to distort my bridge pickup alot more). The bass and treble knobs can make both very subtle and very drastic differences in sound, and rolling them both off gives a very interesting "lo-fi" sound. As for the distortion, it's kind of a mixed bag. On one hand, it's inherently good sounding. On the other hand, it tends to sound very much the same and color the sound more than you may want it. It's a well-made, decent sounding pedal, but if you don't like how it inherently sounds you better get a different pedal.

    Hot Head Hopes

    By Anonymous

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased this used from someone on Amazon, and got it at almost half the price, but in excellent (like new with box and waranty card) condition. I wanted something Boss-ish, but am a hardcore Digitech enthusiast seeing as I've tried every RP out there and love them all (well mostly). I have been clearing out pedals lately and I have an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff, that has taken the throne to my Distortions after years of tone and sound control searching. This pedal (Hot Head) however does offer some great distortion from southern rock all the way to Heavy Nu-metal with the right EQ's, and is exceptionally priced. It's easy to use and Digitech has great customer service. I'd keep it if I needed it but am letting it go. It served well and had just the right distortion without like most pedals (like the beloved Metal Zone), getting that nasty unnatural confusing sound that is too harsh to record and too screechy to play live. I've had many pedals including the metal zone and it can't survive quality wise stand alone... this pedal can, it's heavy, and light, with everything in between without bleeding notes together and sound making your guitar qualified as a gutter! I just firmly believe you should only have to buy one pedal to get one sound, and you shouldn't need EQ and gates to control the nasty that it creates at 3/4 turned up on all knobs!

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have had this pedal for over 4 years now and it truly can do everything. I also own a Boss Super Distortion, which is almost two times as much money. This thing still out plays it in my opinion. Digitech customer service is also one of the best. When the pedal was not working I called them for assistance. The small piece of rubber that actually hits the on/off switch when you press your foot down had fallen off. The technician not only helped me identify the problem, he hand addressed a package and had it shipped to me. Great pedal, Great tone, Great company, Great investment.

    British Tone

    By Rhoads81

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a decent Hard Rock/Metal Distortion Pedal. It's very Crisp, Clear & Open. Kind of like a Marshall in box with a slight touch of Fuzz - very british sounding. Sounds great through the clean channel of a tube amp. Also reminds me of a boss DS-1 with more gain & attitude. Solid & built like a tank. Good EQ Section - probably a buffered bypass like boss - which I actually prefer - it keeps my clean tone clear. For the price you can't go wrong + it's Analog with a lot of great features - In my opinion it's one of the better Digitech Distortion Pedals - It's worth the price of Admission - Check it Out!!

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I received my pedal today, it drove a lot of emotions, not one including disappointment. You will find that this pedal can give you any type of distortion from full-on face melting, to soft and dirty blues. You can set it so open chords may ring out or so power chords can fly to your ears in heavy waves. However, if metal is your main guitar style, this may not be the best choice, the heaviest distortion you may receive is a "Three days Grace" type of sound. This is no doubt the best bang for your buck. You cannot go wrong, keep rocking.

Comments about DigiTech Hot Head Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

You could purchase pedals 2-4 times its price and get a great product, or try this out. Some say it may not work for all distortions or it's a low entry level machine. I'll tell you they are wrong. This pedal does country/blues, mild rock, hard rock, and can dial in metal all simply with the controls... need help finding a tone go to digitechs site and they'll show you 4 or more great sounds it makes all in different genres! I can not be happier with a pedal because it's small, a tank, and creates limitless possibilities. I play some finger picking for fun (I am not great at it), and nu-metal and hardcore on the gigging level. It does better than my metal zone because it has more tonal clarity and can aquire the brutality of that pedal without the fuzzy blur of tone loss! Do yourself a favor and blow money on a great pedal or spend smart and better on this!

I love this pedal; it has that country spank you can get out of it, some jazz tones, and, if you switch the output to 'MIXER', you can get some awesome tones as well. I love it. I sometimes use it for my praise and worship band for my church and everybody loves it. Highly recommended. Also, very durable. It will last a LONG time.

Cure for amps without/toasted distortion gain. Play songs when you can use dry or wet at any time you want and set the settings of sound you want. bought it at the local music store and cranked it and it never ever disappointed me! even you can plug in an amp or mixer. I recommend the Hot Head Distortion Pedal than any other cheap generic brands. DigiTech is quality!
