Like I said before it's such a good unit it needs the old sheetmetal case.
So here's a my review. I've been playing on and off proffessionally for 27 years.
This thing has every single feature you will ever need to get everything from melodic metal distortions,to shimmering glassy cleans. I found out setting it up into the clean channel of my peavey transtube 2x12 what I liked eq wise was the mixer/amp switch should always be set to mixer!!! Then you'll need to crank your bottom end on your amp and on the unit becareful with the mids ands highs on the 255's eq section because they're hotter then blazes. I would recomend for guitar using the twin reverb it's a very accurate repesentation of an old spring twin reverb. Getting clean and dirty patches balanced out after you write them will require somewhat of a learning curve, but all these units do. For the price the only reason I'm not giving Digitech a 10 on this one is the things so sweet I think they shoud have put it in a sheet meatal case.
    tonyo.
    Sheet metal case please.
This is all you'll need live and in the studio.Read the manual ignore the naysayers.

I bought this unit and the Digitech processor works great, with a wide variety of nice sounds and tone, so it's a very nice unit. The Xedit software that can be downloaded from Digitech for controlling the unit is great too. The enclosed Cubase software is another story entirely. The problem is that THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT RUN. This is because, after making you install some verification software and registering on the Steinberg site, you are required to enter a "Soft elicenser number" to activate the Cubase software. The problem is I don't have this number, and the only number on the installation disc is not even the right format. I have e-mailed Musicians Friend technical support and they said contact Steinberg. I submitted the technical support form to Steinberg and got an out of office email from someone in Germany that said the person responsible for answering my question is out of the office until 12/4/10. The included Cubase software is one of the biggest reasons I bought the RP-255 processor; since it doesn't work and I can't get any technical support I have to return it. In other words I could get no technical support at all. So if you are looking for a guitar processor only I would recommend the RP-255 but if you expect to be able to record with it using Cubase you will be very disappointed since you will not be able to do this. I am going to return this today and get the Boss unit, which is similar to the RP-255 but has Cakewalk instead of Cubase for recording.

Comments about DigiTech RP255 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

All multi effects processors struggle with making the programming interface simple -- especially given limited space. Digitech did a good job of providing intuitive editing of patches, but this is not something that can be done with your foot, so in that sense, you cannot make changes on the fly while your on stage. For stage use, you would have to program a handful of patches that cover the majority of your requirements and be able to switch through them in a logical sequence like Clean > Crunch > Distortion > Lead/Solo, etc.

Off stage, the onboard programming interface is pretty easy to use, but I highly recommend the free PC software. It allows you to edit the RP255 via USB and it is amazingly simple to use (I run it on a mac). You can make changes on the PC while playing and instantly hear the results.

The sound quality is excellent. The device is remarkably quiet, even with distortion patches. The variability between amp, speaker, and distortion choices is significant and the EQ has a dramatic effect, if necessary. I also find that the device responds nicely to dynamics allowing you to lighten your picking or roll back the volume to control overdrive and distortion.

The looper is simple to use and works as advertised. It's obviously not as full-featured as a dedicated unit, but it's enough to hit a groove jam on it.

The drum patches are limited and the sounds were a little thin. This is not something that I would recommend for anything other than practicing -- when you just need some background.

I haven't fully explored the Wha capabilities. I think the key is to ensure that the Wha is a 100% of the mix otherwise the effect gets lost.

I might be asking for a bit much at this price point, but one feature that I would like to see added is the ability to accept MIDI via the USB interface for the purposes of patch changes and accepting external clock for time-based effects like tremolo, delay, etc.

I replaced a Behringer V-Amp3, and the RP255 is far superior. The expression pedal and the software interface alone would be enough, but the sounds, dynamics, and on-board programming interface all come together to make this a great processor.

Bottom line: If you had to have one device, this is a great choice.

I have had so much fun with my RP255! It may not be something you would use for live performances due to the slower switching compared to more expensive stomp boxes and somewhat "plasticky" build, but dollar for dollar you'd be hard pressed to find more features in a single unit. If nothing else it inspires you to play, to explore and mainly to just have fun and isn't that what playing is all about! Worth every penny...

This is a great pedal for the money. I have been more then pleased with it. This pedal hooks to my laptop perfect. Recording at home with this is real easy. Sound level going into the PC is well balanced. I have used this pedal in performance on alot of shows. It performed great. This pedal is fun to create sounds and even learn about vintage amps. The amp models on this are spot on. They sound awsome. With this pedal it's like having a stack of vintage amps behind you to select from. It seems you can creat any guitar sound know to man with this. I have had this pedal for about 9 months. Can't say enough good things about it.
