This pedal is great for the heavy metal/thrash/death metal playing styles. It has a wide range of distortion. As much chunk as you want. The low end is the best feature to me. Depending on your tuning and amp you may need to dial it back. Compared it to the new distortion pedals and this one has the heavy sound. Do not get this for anything but the heavy stuff or you will be disappointed. Get the 9volt adapter battery life about 4 hours that's no joke! Thanks Tom

Great pedal, don't get me wrong. This will get you some screaming, over-the-top gain which most guys looking for a Pantera/Metallica or Death Metal sound want. This reminds me of the Metal Zone pedal, but less versatile. My problem with this, is that there is no gain control, which left me having to use my guitar's volume knob to back off the grind a bit. This is obviously a problem and not ideal. If you have high-output pickups, it might be a bit harsh. I have a Les Paul Studio with stock pickups and it sounds much better than my Ibanez w/ an Evolution pickup in it. I think the high output pickups are just too much with this pedal. The distortion is just too saturated.

The "morph" knob doesn't really adjust the gain, but rather to tone. Anywhere from 10-2 o'clock, you get scooped mids. Below and above that you get mid punch, with a little less gain...but again, not much gain control.
It's pretty much "balls to the wall" distortion, which is good for some applications, but gets old fast.

So, if you are looking for a distortion pedal that you can get a screaming lead tone, this is pretty good. Or if your main rhythm tone is all out death or thrash metal then you are set with this. I like to have a gain know where I can go anywhere from light crunch to max and not having a gain knob is a real downer.

After trying several, this one was the sound I was looking for in distortion for my transistor amp. It matched the sound of my tube amp drive setting. I use the transistor amp as a back-up for my tube amp and needed to obtain as close to the same sound as possible. It was awesome!

Comments about DigiTech XMM Metal Master Heavy Metal Distortion Pedal:

It rocks on electric guitar and I turned it up, max, and it does the job. I've always wanted one that would peak out that high and this one does the trick. It does give my acoustic/electric a split personality, so I'll stick with electric guitars to use it.

This pedal sounds great and to my surprise has absolutely zero humming or hissing or noise at all when you turn it on. I couldn't tell that it was even on until I hit the strings, just as clear as my clean channel. The morph feature really shapes the tone nicely. Doesn't give you that over saturation that just blends your chords together when playing hard and fast, great sound definition note to note. Crunch from hell too! Love this pedal and it will be replacing my ever loved Boss MT-2 Metal Zone which I never thought I would be doing.

Comments about DigiTech XMM Metal Master Heavy Metal Distortion Pedal:

It seemed as if a peice was missing from the pedal itself because whenever I stepped on it, it would never turn on. I have fixed it with some DIY, but that shouldnt have to happen to others. Great sound quality if your amp has poor built-in distortion.

Did an impulse buy on a SDOD, glad I did. I don't play a lot of metal, and generally prefer overdrives to distortion. My cover band plays a couple of Pantera songs that need an edgier tone, this does the trick. Great chunky sound, and the X- Morph provides useful tones throughout the range. You can't vary the amount of gain, but rolling off your guitars volume does the same thing. I also have the Bogner Uberschall, and prefer this for heavy metal tones. Great pedal for the price.
