OVERVIEW

Legendary analog overdrive preamp effect pedal with true-bypass and LED indicator.

The legendary analog DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 is back, with over 40 years of history and experience behind it. The 2013 version of the legendary DOD 250 captures of the classic tone and wild heart of the original but in no way tames its performance.

The 250 is better than ever before with true-bypass, a crisp, blue LED indicator, gobs of output, and modern 9V DC power supply input. Redesigned with a lighter aluminum chassis, sleek yellow metallic flake and flat black matte bottom paint job, the 2013 DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 pedal is the perfect sonic foundation to carry on the legacy of DOD.

The DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 (2013) has Gain and Level controls, like its predecessors. Gain controls the amount of distortion, from just a touch of grit to all-out grind. Level dials in some subtle body for "always on" performance or huge amounts of boost for boosting solos above a dense stage mix. With the Gain all the way down, crank up the Level to boost your sound and cut through during your solos.

True-bypass allows your guitar tone to remain pristine even when the DOD 250 is off. This is a big difference from the original which would color your bypassed tone. The modern 9V DC power supply input make the pedal more pedal board friendly.

I have been playing guitar since 1979. I have owned this pedal at least (2) times in my life. Currently I am in a band using EMG loaded Strats and an EMG loaded LP Custom. I play through a "Made in England" JCM 2000 DSL 50 Amplifier. The "Classic" channel has a mode that will give you a 1970's Super Lead or JCM 800 tone. I have used Super Leads all my life until now. So the "Ultra" channel has the gain and sustain you would want for heavier riffs and definitely for guitar solo's. The "Classic" channel, much like my Super Leads, has a great rhythm tone but suffers from a lack of sustain for guitar solos. There's nothing worse than playing a guitar solo and having the vibrato notes fade out too quickly. So I decided a quality boost pedal would goose the front of the amp in "Classic" mode to increase sustain without changing the tone. I looked at Xotic EP Booster's, Xotic SL, MXR Echoplex, and the MXR micro amp. All were very good but I thought they were a little too expensive. When I saw the DOD 250 Overdrive/Pre Amp "on sale" I immediately placed my order. Now for more than half the price I have a pedal that has a level control to goose the front end of my Marshall and the added benefit of a Gain knob should I decide to add a little more Gain. The DOD 250 is a transparent OD/Boost pedal with big head room. You can tell it doesn't mess with your tone too much. So, if you are looking for a boost pedal like what I stated above, I strongly suggest checking out the DOD 250. Save money and get the boost you need and the added gain knob as an extra feature. 100% satisfied and I feel great about saving money. A win win pedal.

I liked the overall sound of this pedal, but I couldn't get it to work for me at a "gig" volume level. Once it's loud enough to cut through the mix, the background hiss becomes quite noticeable. This was not a problem when used at moderate volume levels (at home, recording, etc.).
I also noticed that the EQ changes (gets darker) as you reduce the gain. I liked the EQ best with the gain between 3/4 and wide open. Unfortunately, that's where the circuit gets noisy.
I like it and I'll keep it, but it did not earn a spot on my pedalboard.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

Great, classic overdrive tone. No tone knob, but you don't need one. Using mostly as a clean boost on the top boost channel of my Vox AC30, but it's also useful to dial in a range of gain good for blues to AC/DC type classic rock to more modern stuff like Weezer. Note: this pedal added/maintained a healthy dose of bottom end without sacrificing mids/highs.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

The addition of the Boss style adaptor plug was a very welcome modification. The indicator light is cool as well. Both were absent in earlier versions of this classic overdrive. I've owned all versions of this pedal, including the original grey and yellow pedals. This is a nice take on them and the lighter weight casing appears to be aluminum. The originals and later reissues used a cast material that was heavy and was a bit of overkill for such a simple circuit. This is a great alternative to those. The circuit has a tendency to be a little bassy especially as the gain is increased. It lends itself to single coil guitars very well(yngwie) but works great with humbucking pickups as well. One of my all time favorite over drives, and I own them all. Stacks well with other pedals. Everyone should try this one, it rips.

Good, but about what I expected

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

The DOD 250 Reissue is a great pedal, and to it's own right, I cannot fault it at all. It, even in clean boost mode (with gain all the way down, and volume up), fattens the sound and slightly EQ's it. I feel that it boosts the bass a bit, but the sound is still even across the spectrum. Therefore, I feel I have to say it simply seems to "fatten" the sound a bit. The gain from there sounds like a creamier version of cranking my amp. It is a little fuzz like, but I certainly can't call it a fuzz. It is more fuzzy than overdrives, and less than fuzzes, I suppose. I use it mostly for leads or for heavier gain (albeit, not that heavy think something like Cream and The White Stripes) sections of a song. It gives the most beautiful creamy sound in the upper register of the guitar for leads or whatever your heart desires. :)

The single best thing is that if you roll back the volume knob on your guitar, this pedal gives a brighter, clearer sound that is perfect for open chords and mellow rhythm. All in all, this is a wonderful pedal.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

This pedal can be used as a boost or overdrive. The design is very simple only one blue led light for indication it's on as well as level and gain knobs to dial in your sound. The pedal takes up very little room on the pedal board but adds some great options for boost or gain. Lastly the pedal stacks wells with every pedal I have used.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I bought this as a Stupid Deal not knowing much about it. I had been wanting to expand my overdrive options, so I read the reviews and some history and decided I couldn't pass up on the price.

But I've been having more fun with this pedal than any OD in a long time. It probably won't be my everyday go-to, because to my ears, the tone is geared toward some very specific flavors of classic rock (and lately I've been playing a lot of folk/roots/blues).

*But*, if you want a great, pretty unique classic tone, this pedal is fantastic. It's clean when you need it to be, but it also gets fabulously dirty.

I do think I would have liked it if this version had been upgraded with at least a passive tone control, because sometimes it pushes highs or lows a little much (depending on the amp). But that's nothing a cheap EQ can't fix (and kids, you should be EQing anyway!) -- and I have to say that the vintage, two-knob aesthetics at least *feel* really good. :-)

But what really blows me away about the 250 reissue is how ripping the lows can get. I was playing around with it through a small, old Line 6 combo, and through that one 12" speaker (and weak EQ performance on the amp itself), I was getting absolutely massive, almost wall-of-sound tones on rhythm riffs and bar chords (old Starflyer 59, anyone?). And leads are thick and warm -- and most importantly, harmonics and string/pickup characteristics stay beautifully well defined no matter how high you turn up the gain.

Like I said, this one may not be for everyone in every situation, but definitely try it out if you want to go for unique vintage vibes. Think: the best of proto-metal classic rock -- which brings me to the paint job. The photos here on MF don't do it justice (at least not on my monitors). On my screen, the pedal looks like it's a bright, bumblebee yellow, but in real life, it's a gorgeous, metallic-flake gold. Makes me want to let my hair down and get out the tight jeans.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

This reissue sounds quite nice, seems really sturdy, and sells at a very good price.

I knocked off a star for a lack of versatility in two ways:

              1) As has been said in these reviews before, it matters what kind of rig you slip this into. If it already trends bright, you'll need another control (like a presence knob) because this thing only gets brighter.

              2) It's one dimensional. It really only does its signature classic rock thing, so kind of limited applications genre-wise. You won't be busting this out at a funk or melodeath show any time soon.

Ultimately, if you research this and know what it does, it sounds really good. It can be tweaked to get a few different classic rock sounds, and I'm glad to be able to add it to my palette to toy around with.

I just recently received this pedal and it has a classic tone. Despite fairly simple controls, it is actually quite versatile. I do not have a "high gain" tube amp, I have a "vintage gain" tube amp. One of my favorite uses for this pedal is as a slight gain boost for my tube combo; gain around 10 o'clock and volume just past 1 o'clock. But this pedal sounds equally good on its own. I would definitely purchase again.

Channel B is higher gain still, but its a little harsh. I wanted a way to go from the mild-to-mid overdrive in Channel A to a smooth and controllable higher gain for leads and more out-front passages or songs, with just a switch. This pedal is perfect. Just 2 knobs - gain and level, and one switch - on or off. I love it! It allows my guitar-amp rig to sound just like it should, but with my precise control over the gain. Compact, so it doesn't take up more than its share of my pedal board, which I like to keep spare.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I tried a 1970s ODP250 back in the day and didn't dig it. I tried a c.2004 reissue at the time and didn't dig it. I tried this one, and I dig it. Is it better? I know my approach to overdrive pedals has changed. I used to crank the Gain knob in search of early Van Halen tones. This sounded gnarly in a unique and cool but somewhat ugly fuzz-pedal way when I cranked the Gain knob. Now, I look for more transparent and amp-like tones for classic rock and blues, and this delivers in a way that surprises me for such an old design. With the Gain knob at 09:00 or below, the Level knob offers a clean to dirty boost effect. With the Gain knob around noon, it's a good light-to-medium overdrive that preserves solid low end yet offers a hint of vocal midrange to enhance mix-cutting ability. With the Gain above 1:30, it starts getting nasty. The overdrive effect responds to pick attack and to the volume knob on my Strat. No wonder Yngwie and others have dug this thing for decades. My only negative is that the jacks look plastic.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I'm glad to see DOD finally started to reissue their classic pedals. I own an original yellow DOD 250 overdrive and have heard the even older grey casing overdrive 250 and have always been a fan of the sound of my original DOD 250. I'm someone who has numerous distortion and overdrive pedals, tube, digital and analog (you can never have enough distortion pedals) and my original 250 has been used exclusively at home, but not taken out, because I didn't want anything to happen to it, but now, problem solved. The reissue, comes really close to the original pedal, not exact, but very close and its in the old durable casing that takes a beating, one of the things that I love about the old DOD pedals. I also like the addition of the LED, so you don't have to guess if its still one and kill a battery, like what sometimes happened with my old one, especially if its in a pedal board and you aren't using a power brick (I used Voodoo Power in my boards, but I remember killing batteries). Their soft switch models didn't hold up quite as well, even though they sounded good. This pedal has solid overdrive tone and good transparency. In one of my pedal boards, I have it next to a Boss DS1 and when you run both, you get a great boosted tone, but alone the DOD 250 sounds great. I bought mine during the Stupid Deal of the Day, but I would have bought one either way. If you want classic overdrive tone, this one is a must have. I find that it works great with my Tele's, Strat's and Rickenbackers, not as much with my Les Pauls, but that's just a preference.

Really liking this pedal. I use it after an Xotic BB, RC and AC, it's nice even boost without the tube screamer mid Q bump. With both controls at 11 o'clock, adds just enough extra grit and drive to cut through a mix when I need a part to stand out from the mix.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I bought it as it was half off as the Stupid Deal Of The Day and while I don't regret it, I haven't quite bonded with it. It can be very bright and lacks 'natural', tube-like breakup/distortion. It's definitely a proudly transistory sound. For some this works, and for some it may not. I can imagine it working very well with a Les Paul through a darker, more midrange oriented amp. With a Strat through a blackface Fender-ish amp, it's a bit trickier to dial in. It works quite nicely as a clean boost though, and I like it with lower gain settings.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I have been dissatisfied with my Keeley Modded BD-2 Boss Blues Driver, which I have had for years. Just did not do the trick. I sent back to Keeley but they said it was working fine...but to my ear the sound was scratchy and the pots were noisey. Bought this DOD unit on a SDOTD event, based on a few YouTube reviews. In short, I think it is quite nice. The range of overdrive, from essentially none (acts as a boost) to a nice overdriven gain is very useful. So, I swapped out the Boss BD-2 two hrs before a gig, put the DOD-250 in the "slot" and just hoped for the best! Well it was great! Was able to get exactly the drive (or not) I wanted and the tone was nicely preserved whether engaged or not (true-bypass). I think this is a nice effect and I believe I will keep it on the board. BTW I am a FX junky, and I love to re-arrange the board. But I have never done this just before a show- and a big one at that: an outdoor festival with one 90+ min set and approx. 300 fans. Whew...all worked out OK!!

I had been using the Ibanez TS808 Tubescreamer for years. It's a solid pedal, but when you engage it, it cuts out all your low end resulting in a "squashed" sound. I bought the Preamp 250 on a whim for Stupid Deal of The Day and, when engaged, it sounds pretty darn good. True bypass is nice too. Rich full sound from piercing highs to thick lows. It is replacing the the TS808 in my signal chain.

I bought this on impulse, mostly because I love the phaser 201. I thought I'd use it for guitar, naturally, but decided to throw it on my bass rig just for fun. I have been experimenting with different amps, preamps, od's and distortion units for a long time to find smooth overdriven bass tones (think Geddy Lee on hemispheres, permanent waves and moving pictures). Years of searching is finally over. Please note that to achieve the sound, I bi amp 2 sansamp rpm's, clean to one cab and overdrive to another. At real low drive settings, it warms up a p bass for classic Motown, or a jazz bass for 70's rock. Set at noon- red barchetta!
