OVERVIEW

Legendary analog overdrive preamp effect pedal with true-bypass and LED indicator.

The legendary analog DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 is back, with over 40 years of history and experience behind it. The 2013 version of the legendary DOD 250 captures of the classic tone and wild heart of the original but in no way tames its performance.

The 250 is better than ever before with true-bypass, a crisp, blue LED indicator, gobs of output, and modern 9V DC power supply input. Redesigned with a lighter aluminum chassis, sleek yellow metallic flake and flat black matte bottom paint job, the 2013 DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 pedal is the perfect sonic foundation to carry on the legacy of DOD.

The DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 (2013) has Gain and Level controls, like its predecessors. Gain controls the amount of distortion, from just a touch of grit to all-out grind. Level dials in some subtle body for "always on" performance or huge amounts of boost for boosting solos above a dense stage mix. With the Gain all the way down, crank up the Level to boost your sound and cut through during your solos.

True-bypass allows your guitar tone to remain pristine even when the DOD 250 is off. This is a big difference from the original which would color your bypassed tone. The modern 9V DC power supply input make the pedal more pedal board friendly.

FEATURES
  • True-bypass
  • Crisp, blue LED indicator
  • Modern 9V DC power supply input

I have been playing guitar since 1979. I have owned this pedal at least (2) times in my life. Currently I am in a band using EMG loaded Strats and an EMG loaded LP Custom. I play through a "Made in England" JCM 2000 DSL 50 Amplifier. The "Classic" channel has a mode that will give you a 1970's Super Lead or JCM 800 tone. I have used Super Leads all my life until now. So the "Ultra" channel has the gain and sustain you would want for heavier riffs and definitely for guitar solo's. The "Classic" channel, much like my Super Leads, has a great rhythm tone but suffers from a lack of sustain for guitar solos. There's nothing worse than playing a guitar solo and having the vibrato notes fade out too quickly. So I decided a quality boost pedal would goose the front of the amp in "Classic" mode to increase sustain without changing the tone. I looked at Xotic EP Booster's, Xotic SL, MXR Echoplex, and the MXR micro amp. All were very good but I thought they were a little too expensive. When I saw the DOD 250 Overdrive/Pre Amp "on sale" I immediately placed my order. Now for more than half the price I have a pedal that has a level control to goose the front end of my Marshall and the added benefit of a Gain knob should I decide to add a little more Gain. The DOD 250 is a transparent OD/Boost pedal with big head room. You can tell it doesn't mess with your tone too much. So, if you are looking for a boost pedal like what I stated above, I strongly suggest checking out the DOD 250. Save money and get the boost you need and the added gain knob as an extra feature. 100% satisfied and I feel great about saving money. A win win pedal.

I liked the overall sound of this pedal, but I couldn't get it to work for me at a "gig" volume level. Once it's loud enough to cut through the mix, the background hiss becomes quite noticeable. This was not a problem when used at moderate volume levels (at home, recording, etc.).
I also noticed that the EQ changes (gets darker) as you reduce the gain. I liked the EQ best with the gain between 3/4 and wide open. Unfortunately, that's where the circuit gets noisy.
I like it and I'll keep it, but it did not earn a spot on my pedalboard.

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

I generally tend to set up my OD's and EQ's close to my base tone and let the 'secret sauce' of the circuit impart it's own thing on my tone - really like the subtle tweak to the mids. Also increases singing sustain a bit even at my mild settings. Really dig it!

Comments about DOD Analog Overdrive Preamp 250 Guitar Effects Pedal with True-Bypass and LED:

Cool little overdrive. Can be really transparent and a bit bright at the lower settings, but once you get to 12 o'clock on the gain, it gets REALLY hairy and super compressed. That's not a sound I go for, so I have been keeping the gain low and mostly using it to stack into other overdrives. I particularly like this one before my Ponyboy (Klon style) drive as it adds quite a bit of chunk while still maintaining clarity.

I paid thirty nine ninety five for this thing on sale here at MF, and spent hours playing it with my single-coil Strat, my humbucker Les Paul, heck I even plugged my Alvarez dreadnaught into it. Both with my Vox AC4 and my Champ clone, I honestly could not get a bad sound out of it. But the sounds I got inspired me to pump plenty of bad playing INTO it! If I had to find a fault, it's a little "noisy," in that it amplifies your usual hums and buzzes, but it's an overdrive: isn't making noise kind of the point!? It also sounds really cool driving a DOD Carcosa fuzz, plus the colors match!

I love this pedal on single coil guitars for adding a little extra grit and oomph when i cannot crank my amp to the point of break up. It sounds much more amp-like than a tube screamer. It doesn't remove any lows or highs, just adds drive. I've had the ZVEX Box of Rock and I prefer this pedal over that one, but I think it's a similar effect.

I didn't find it very usable on my humbucker equipped guitars. It was a little muddy and too heavy for my taste, but it might be good for heavier music styles if that is what you're into.
