OVERVIEW

Unmistakable Jimi voodoo.

Jimi Hendrix was the master of fuzz, an artist with many subtle shadings at his command. His love affair with the legendary Fuzz Face pedal began in the early days of the Experience and continued to evolve throughout his brief but blazing career.

The Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Distortion is a meticulously faithful reproduction of the 1969“70 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face model that Jimi used on classic albums such as Electric Ladyland. Dunlop's engineering department examined hoards of vintage Fuzz Face pedals, honing in on a few units which possessed that unmistakable Jimi voodoo.

The Hendrix Fuzz Face is built around the toneful BC108 silicon transistor. It is authentic in every detail, featuring a hand-wired brown circuit board with no solder mask and circuitry carefully matched to original specs. It' all housed in a 100% accurate groovy circular chassis with tooled clones of the original Fuzz Face knobs in the rare and vintage turquoise hammertone finish. A truly playable collectable for any Hendrix or Fuzz Face fanatic.

I bought this pedal for Christmas, and then sent it back. In my opinion, this pedal sounds nothing like Hendrix whatsoever. If you want a better, more diverse fuzz pedal then just get a Big Muff. It sounds a lot more like hendrix than this thing - the fuzz face has no tone versatility. I played my fuzz face both with my pedal board (it did something funny here) and without, and it just didn't cut that classic hendrix sound for me. Now I played it through a Les Paul and a Marshall JCM, so you would think that it would sound similar to Hendrix, but no...To me it seems like you are paying for the name here: not quality or performance.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

I love this fuzz box. It gives me that "acid" tone I want on certain tunes.
I picked up an old Pignose 40V and along with my Dunlop Wah Wah this Fuzz box makes the package complete. The Pignose is all tube so it really sounds cool when the fuzz and the wah are doing their thing. Built strong and sturdy, with easy controls it fits the bill perfectly.
    Very good quality construction.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

I have a G&L strat that I run thru this fuzz pedal to a Tube Tone Vibroverb 63' reproduction. I've been looking for a fuzz pedal for quite a while that would be touch sensitive and put just enough hair on the notes. This combination totally nails the Hendrix "clean" sound. Everything from "The wind cries Mary", "Hey Joe" to "Little Wing" sound exact. Most video demo's I've watched all demonstrate the high gain dirty sound of the fuzz pedal, but almost none demonstrate the cleaner sounds. The pedal is perfect for classic rock riffs and blues based rock. I run the pedal at 3/4ths volume and fuzz knob on full with the guitars volume knob backed off to taste. If this is the sound you're looking for, look no further… this is the one!

        Hendrix Fuzz Face

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

What can you say, you get what you pay for. This his is amazing, and very vintage, with a definite "voodoo" sound. Although it is not very responsive (not much fuzz until the knob is almost all the way up), it is an excellent sound. The same thing goes for the volume knob. However, that is practically irrelevant to how good the pedal sounds. Very similar to Jimi. Sounds unbelievable through my 1974 100 watt Super Lead head. Of course Jimi used a strat, but my Gibson 57 Les Paul Custom and my Gibson 58 Les Paul custom sound unbelievable as well. My strat sounds equally good also.

        great pedal...

        By Hendrix Fan

        from Michigan

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This is an awesome pedal. Nothing but vintage fuzz. I play a fender strat through a 67' bassman, and the tone this pedal puts out is godly. I would advize playing through tube amps only, it wont produce that vintage sound through a solid state. The fuzz nob is kind of a waste though, about 90% of the fuzz nob produces a warm fuzz. When you get to the last 10% or so, it makes a hendrix fuzz sound come to life. The true colors of this pedal shine when you adjust the volume nob on your guitar. It takes out some of the fuzz but leaves behind some of the crunch which sounds nice when your amp volume is turned on high. When a lead comes up, turn the volume nob on your guitar for a nice hendrix sounding solo. Buy it, its worth it.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

I ordered this pedal knowing it would not be an onslaught of noise, but some really good tones. I ran it alone and then with my Blackstone Appliances mossfet overdrive. Since I play thru a squeaky clean amp, I knew I would need to layer this pedal with some kind of signal boost and these two pedals together produced some of the best tones I'd heard in 40 years of playing. But, today I returned the JH-F1 because it couldn't run either alone, or within my chain without radio signal interference. I could literally listen to someone carry on a conversation. Needless to say I was disappointed. I gave it decent ratings for quality because the components are good. Dunlop just needs to clean up the circuit.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This is now my favorite pedal. When I first tried it I was a little puzzled on how it worked. After experimenting with it I found putting my overdrive in between the fuzz and my cry baby unlocked the hendrix vibe. This petal has serious voodoo. And this is the first time my wah has sounded really good. I am so glad I decided to get this pedal.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This pedal is excellent for certain players: those who have the right gear to accompany it and who have the time to really sit down and dial in the right sound. This isn't going to be for everyone, but I guess no pedal really is! A cranked tube amp really makes this thing shine. If you are using a solid state amp and are considering this pedal, just know that you are probably not going to hear the Fuzz Face at its full potential, so be very cautious.

This is not a "plug-in-and-play" kind of pedal. It took me a couple of sittings to tweak my amp and the pedal settings enough to get a good sound and to be honest I did not like it at first. After putting the time in, I have gotten a really good, pummeling fuzz tone with this thing and my Vox AC30. I love it! It is probably best known for working in conjunction with single coil pickups but I have gotten a really great sound with my mid-2000's Gibson SG Standard. So, I would recommend trying it even if you have a guitar with humbuckers!

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This unit has great vintage mojo that gives good Hendrix tone w/Strat. I sent mine back to exchange for the MXR 108 classic fuzz. Basically the same unit with bypass, ac and smaller in size. The Fuzz face also has a noisy pop to the foot switch and runs on a 9 volt only. It is made very sturdy and is a true recreation. In order to get the transistors to really kick in you have to turn the fuzz knob up almost all the way. The unit I had was a littel week so I had to run it with a DOD Grey OD clone to boost the gain a little. Overall it has great tone and with a Moen Jimi pedal and a decent tube amp cranked up its Hendrix/Trower all the way. Pretty cool

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

I came across a good deal for this pedal wich matched the price of the MXR 108 Fuzz. Because they were now the same price, this made my decision harder. I was originally set to get the MXR 108 Fuzz since it used the same BC108 silicon transistors and had a buffer, LED, and DC power jack but after hearing both of them, the Fuzz Face sounded different and more like the vintage fuzz I was searching for. The FF has a crunchier tone (think Clapton in Cream)than the MXR. Why I think they sound different?: The MXR has those added extra's which can effect the tone of the pedal. I know that sounds crazy but I've heard pedal makers say that the most simplistic pedals often sound the best. Think about it...makes sense. Pedals with tons of EQ and other options often sound processed and too perfect. I hope that this helps. Definitely check out both MXR 108 and this Fuzz Face and see what you think. Proguitarshop.com has great sound tests of each..you'll see the difference. I had the dunlop (Red)germanium version in the 1990's and didn't like it much. Too noisy and hard to get a good usable tone. Love this Hendrix Fuzz Face though!

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

I just got this recently because several of my favorite guitar players used it, mainly Gilmour and Hendrix. I replaced my Big Muff with this and this thing wins every time. The BM might have a little more sustain and more features with a tone knob. But you have to really push the muff to get it to sound right. You don't have to do that with this pedal. I sounds good with strats, teles, and les pauls unlike the BM. It only sounded good with single coils to me. Plus I'm playing through a solid state for now. The fuzz face cleans up really easy. Set the Volume at about 70% and Fuzz at 100% and forget it. Just adjust your guitars volume to clean it up. Cleaned up, it sounds more like a rude distortion pedal, and cranked it sounds like classic fuzz and not mud.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This is an excellent sounding pedal. I use it with an 05 american strat and a class A tube amp. It just sounds warm and beautiful!!! It sounds like Hendrix's fuzz as promised. Especially if you mix in a little reverb. It sounds a lot like SRV (tightrope comes to mind) to me too. If you turn the knobs up on the pedal and roll back the vol on the strat it sounds nice and glassy. Really diversified pedal if you know what to do. Fool around with the knobs on the pedal and the knobs and your guitar. It doesn't take long to get the hang of how to use it. Unlike some products, this one is worthy of the Hendrix name. This pedal is a replica of the vintage Fuzz face so yes the plugs are "backwards" and there is no power plug. It was created to be as much like the origional as possible. Good thing too, cause it sounds great and that is the whole point!!! (One Spot makes a kit with an adapter that fits into the 9 volt's plug in. So, you can use a power supply with this pedal if you really wanted to.)

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

Only two knobs to have to adjust, huge range of tones to be had. Just set the volume and fuzz to desired level for the lead with the guitar's volume on 10 and turn the volume down to clean up for the verses. I've never played a pedal that's so responsive to the guitar's volume. I tried an american strat with gold lace sensors and a gibson les paul with emg81/85 through a mesa/boogie DC-3 and it's just a beautiful smooth fuzz. It really does sound like the band of gypsys. Low score on features for the battery only operation, would like to have a power jack. I realize it's a reissue, but it's 2008 and I just paid a lot for a pedal, at least include a battery. My pedal didn't even come with a battery. Overall I think this is the best sounding fuzz I've ever played would buy another one if I had to.

Comments about Dunlop JH-F1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal:

This is a great fuzz from Dunlop. While most of the mass produced germanium fuzzes fall short, companies seem to be having pretty good luck with silicon based designs, such as this one. However, shockingly, this thing doesn't have much of a Handrix vibe. I'll get to that later. This, being a silicon fuzz, is voiced a lot different than the earlier germanium fuzzes. It is gainier, raspier, and brighter, which results in a much different sound. This, in a lot of cases, is not a problem. If you're playing a Les Paul, I would recommend this over a germanium, for the germaniums tend to be muddier when working with an already beefier, darker tone. Now, why do I think this doesn't really attain the "Hendrix-vibe?" When I think of Hendrix tone, I think of mainly two songs in particular: Love or Confusion (the EPITOME of gooey 60's fuzz) and Red House. Both these were achieved with Germanium fuzzes on top of a fairly bright (in Red House's case, a BRIGHT) clean Strat sound. However, later in his career, he achieved some GREAT silicon fuzz tones, such as the entire Band of Gypsies album. However, like I said, when I think of "Hendrix fuzz," his earlier germanium tones come to mind before anything.

A great pedal. Finally makes those open E power chord to E9 riffs sound good. (the progression sounded to jazzy until I bought this. It will make you want to play loose... It will make you want to play slow. It will inspire you. It sounds great for open tunings with my Decca. Sounds like hendrix with my strat. It's very sensitive to what you put in front of it. Sounds creamier if you put a tone sucking pedal like a wah in front of it... Suppose you could just eq your amp if you have a good amp... Anyway, this pedal is making me sell my Marshall MG HDFX 100 for a epiphone valve jr and a bugera 1960 plexi. Do it, buy it now!!!

Also, if you'd like to make the sound cleaner just lower the volume on your guitar and it's amazing how fast it will clean it up. My guitar teacher taught me a lot about the pedal, I really like it.
