OVERVIEW

Huge Hendrix sound in a compact pedal with awesome limited edition artwork.

The thick wash of Univibe® that permeates the landmark Band of Gypsys album is undeniably some of the most transcendent tone ever recorded. With its phasey, chorusy, Leslie-sounding goodness, Jimi Hendrix was able to summon startlingly rich textures that sound as if you can actually spoon them out of the speakers. The Jimi Hendrix™ 70th Anniversary Tribute Series Univibe delivers these classic tones in all of their stunning analog glory, and at a fraction of the size of the vintage Shin-ei unit that Hendrix used in late ’69/’70. Finally, this Univibe is emblazoned with colorful, iconic Hendrix art from legendary rock artist John Van Hamersveld. One listen to the otherworldly “Machine Gun” and you will know why the Univibe is one of the most cherished, unmistakable effects in guitar history.

Comments about Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition Univibe 70th Anniversary Tribute Series:

I bought this pedal because I was slightly disappointed by the sound of my Rotovibe and wanted to save a little space on my pedalboard. Turns out this pedal sounds as ugly as it looks (I was willing to forgive the looks to get a great Leslie sound in a compact box). Granted, I have never used a real Univibe, so perhaps this pedal is faithful to the original unit, but it sounds nothing like my Rotovibe! It drastically alters the frequencies; it creates a huge mid-scoop that transforms my tone from relatively flat to extremely bass-y and trebly at the same time. It's terrible. It's the same thing a lot of MXR modulation pedals too--your tone sounds processed and synthetic, rather than organic and natural. To say the least I was disappointed. On a positive note, I was kind of surprised by how cool the "VIBE" mode sounds. If you're looking for a vibrato pedal it sure beats paying a ton for a good one like the BOSS VB-2. I was hoping this pedal would do roughly what the Rotovibe does, which is color my existing tone, not drastically alter its frequencies. There are a number of good Leslie speaker simulators out there; steer away from this one.

Comments about Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition Univibe 70th Anniversary Tribute Series:

I've been waiting for MXR to come out with a Uni-vibe in their standard sized housing for all my 30 years of playing, so I'm extremely happy with this purchase!!! I still can't figure why it took them so long, they have like 8 Phasers, and discontinued the overly bulky silver UV. They also have the Rotovibe which sounds great, but since I already have Cry Baby Wha, that addition is just too big and bulky for a compact Pedal Board. This pedal sounds Awesome!!! It's super chewy thick and dripping in analog goodness. My only complaint is that the SPEED knob goes from slow to fast over too short of a range. IMHO by the time you get the 11 o'clock position, it's unusable for the typical Uni-vibe sound you bought this effect for. I didn't care too much for the vibe button functionalty, it shuts off the phase modulation to leave you with just the vibrato half of the effect. I haven't experimented with this enough, but it may be able to get that Hammond B3 sound for SRV's Cold Shot.

Bottom Line: The Uni-Vibe is replacing my ordinary Phaser immediately..!
