An overdrive that recreates some of the most sought after amp tone of all time.
The Monarch Overdrive is an all discrete, FET based dirt machine. It's designed around the input stage of a vintage amp produced by a company that bears the same name as the color of the monarch (hint¦). It's been configured to produce higher gains that sound very natural and free of compression. The treble and bass controls function as frequency boosters, not the traditional roll off filters in most OD's. They are located in the preamp section and have a large impact on the over all tone, nature and distortion characteristics of the pedal as well as your amp. It gives big bottom end with a snappy, bright top at all gain ranges with some careful tuning of the tone controls. If you are looking for an overdrive for big fat chords with excellent low end retention, this is it! And, yes, it's true bypass.

Comments about EarthQuaker Devices Monarch Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:
I took some time to research and watch some videos on the Monarch before I finally decided to take a chance on it. I wanted something "different" but that would also be able to cover a lot of ground. I've had it for about a year, and I can now say with considerable experience that this is a VERY versatile overdrive pedal.
EQD has been pretty up front to note, and it's now fairly common knowledge on gear forums, that this pedal is designed around the preamp section a vintage Orange amp. The orange color of the pedal is a clear nod in that direction. I'd say this pedal lives up to that QUITE well. If you are a fan of Orange amps, then you're going to appreciate the nature and characteristics of this OD unit. And if you're not an Orange fan, or don't know if you are, this OD still has a lot to offer you.
Its got chime-y cleans at the lower gain settings (roughly 10 o'clock back), and I think works really well alone there, or as a preamp with a mid-boosting OD running into it.
It gets wooly and thick the higher you turn up the gain. In this regard, you can get some amazing overdrive tones – from hard-rocking using single coils to thick sustaining fuzz on neck-position humbucker pickups, and everything in-between. Used with a clean amp, it can get you amp-in-a-box Orange amp tonalities, while it really enhances an already-overdriven amp. The Level knob is at unity when set to about 9 o'clock, so it will REALLY boost your amp after that.
This is NOT a mid-boosting OD that simply rolls off bass and treble frequencies. It does a great job of staying un-compressed and "open", even as you get into those woolier Orange-amp-like gains. The two-band EQ are (just like the description notes) frequency BOOSTERS. This really opens up a huge array of possibilities enhancing and sculpting tones using this unit. For example, getting it to sound like a thick fuzz, set the Gain and Bass both to 3 o'clock, and the Level and Treble both to noon. Voila! And at higher gain settings, the Treble is essentially a treble-booster.
Pre-amp, OD, fuzz, boot, treble boost, chime-y or thick. Stand-alone OD or used in series with other gain devices. It does a LOT, and all really well. In all, a great OD device…I'm glad I own it!
