To the previous reviewer who ran his guitar or amp signals through this device. The device should be plugged into the outlet where you get the power for your all your gear. It's at the beginning of the power circuit that the noise reduction from the original power signal is recuced. I use it correctly and have found it eliminates at least 90 - 95% of ground loop noise. Once again the signal path is wall outlet to HUM X Exterminator to a multi plug circuit protector with an overload switch. Then plug in your amp and pedals and whatever else into the multi plug in device. This is a really inexpensive way to eliminate ground loop noise from your equipment without spending $1500.00 on a power conditioner.

I tried plugging in the Hum X Hum Exterminator
every way I could think of but it made no difference at all. I have a pretty standard pedalboard (wah, distortion, delay/chorus, tuner) and it didn't take out the hum that I get from flourescent and neon lights. Even pulled everything off my board and started from scratch with this thing plugged in to each pedal...didn't help. (also tried different guitars)...I know the problem is on my end...just wanted folks to know that this thing won't perfom miracles for you...(oh and yes tried plugging everything into a power strip with the Hum X Hum Exterminator...no good)

Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
I bought this because of the positive reviews. It did not help me at all though, so I returned it. It couldn't hurt to try it to see if it helps solve your noisy power issues. YMMV.
FYI, it has a larger footprint than a regular transformer spot, so even if you have a transformer spot, it will still take up two outlets.

Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
As soon as I isolated the problem (massive ground noise from an 2nd board I have coming into a sub on my main mixing board), I plugged the 2nd board's rack AC into the Hum X and into the wall - and Zap - like Magic - no hum at all! Awesome!

- Compact Design

Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
Let's face it. Power is unpredictable. From the outlets at your house, to the outlets at the gig, to the outlets in the studio (which SHOULD be protected and quiet...). The Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator should be permanently attached to the power cord of any musician that has gear that plugs into the wall.
THE TEST:
I have the luxury of having two identical little Crate V5 combo amps. I plugged them both into the same power outlet in my house (one in the top outlet, one in the bottom) and turned them on with the volume at about 3/4. They both exhibited the usual hiss/cyclical 60-HZ noise. Then I turned off the bottom amp, unplugged it, put the Ebtech Hum X in-line, plugged it back in, and turned it back on. No noise. I repeated this operation with the other amp just to make sure I wasn't crazy. No noise. I've lived with the fact that the power in my house is "less than desirable" when it comes to noise and amps/recording. I don't usually throw around the word "panacea" but this little plug is a must-have if you've got noise coming from ground loops or bad power. It's been a long time since a piece of gear impressed me as much as the Hum X. Now I'm just wondering how they do it in such a small package. I've had my original one for about four years now and it's solid as a rock!
Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
(I had written a fairly lenghty positive review on this before realizing that I typed it in the wrong section...Well, it won't allow cut-n-paste so... the heck with typing it all again...)
It works just fine eliminating my monitor hum (minimal setup: Macbook Pro/mbox2 mini/KRK Rokit Monitors)...
solid construction...
Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
The Ebtech Hum X does just what its supposed to do - cancels out the (almost always) Laptop AC Ground Loop Hum! Anytime you have a Laptop Computer within your loop/chain/board configuration, you can (almost) always count on having an "AC Hum" which is (almost) ALWAYS caused by the Laptop's external AC direct-connect Power Source/Transformer. Its easy to find out if thats your problem. Simply remove the Laptops external power cable, run the Laptop on its battery power source and "listen" for the hum to go away!!! If it does, then you know you definitely have an AC Ground Loop problem with the external power source.! Simply plug the Ebtec Hum X into your UPS/Regulated Power supply Output jack and then plug the Laptop's external AC cable into the Ebtec Hum X done deal! When ordering up the Ebtec Hum X, dont forget that there could be "other additional power-hum problems that need addressed. If thats the case and you still have other hums, checkout the other tips I have listed elsewhere in this review. Remember, very rarely does one piece of equipment handle everything. Note: DJ's have had this same (Laptop in configuration) problem for years and are amazed how such a simple plug-in device like the Ebtech Hum X eliminates the situation Since Ground Loop Hums seem to always be a problem, one piece of equipment normally does not handle them all. You need to isolate, in your configuration, just what piece of gear/cable is creating the "hum." The first place I would start (and install/place hum unit) would be at the Amplifier using a Dual-Channel type Hum unit (Nady HE1 or Ebtec). Connect the individual Output cables from your Pedal Board/Mixer and Guitar to the Input side of the (Nady HE1 or Ebtech Hum Eliminator) unit; Connect the Output of the (Nady HE1 or Ebtec ) to the Amps Input channels. Note: Make sure you use superior quality grade TS patch/jumper cables for connecting here (Hosa or DiMarzio are great.) Also, don't forget to check your Mixer XLR/Jack connectors for any added "hums" that maybe present. If this is the case, another solution is using the Ebtech HE-2R. This unit will handle 2 channels each of both your TS & XLR cable runs. Dont forget to inquire with your sales rep about purchasing/including within your configuration a good Regulated Power source commensurate with the equipment/pedals you are using in your overall configuration. They are a definite safety net and, will add years to your equipment by providing good, constant, clean power to your systems configuration. All of these mentioned units are of great value to your configuration considering they all do just what they are suppose to do. Yes, they are going to cost you a little extra cash however; sometimes these extra expenses are necessary in order to fix the problems. Pricey? Not really considering what you'll receive in the end - "Better Quality Sound" and isn't that what its all about??? As we all know: "if ya' wanna' dance, ya' gotta' pay the band." Good Luck!

Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
This didn't really work for me. I have a Randall RM100 and run various guitars through it, and there is still noticable noise. I'd save up a little more and get a better power conditioner.
Comments about Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator:
Other people on here who say this doesn't work have hum within their setup that has nothing to do with what this device is for. This will break the loop, eliminate hum, and help cancel noise from the outlet is is plugged into. It's simple, and it works as designed- perfectly. If you still have hum, troubleshoot your setup, but this will always do its job where you put it. I've have mine for 3 years, punishing treatment, and NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. Some line noise that is not from the ground loops cannot be eliminated without spending gobs of money on special power conditioners or rewiring a bad circuit in a building. This thing works great for me, and even at least helps in those ratholes with really noisy power. Required gear for musicians. Example: last night, a new band I just started playing with, the guy doing sound flipped on his PA and got a loud hum. Obvious ground loop. I handed him my ebtech and told him to plug it in on one end. Did that, turned it back on, and the hum was GONE. He is now a convert and will buy several of these. BUY IT!
