A tone-tweaker's dream come true, with double the power of the original Tweaker!

The Egnater Tweaker-40 tube guitar amp head is an expansion of the award winning Tweaker-Series and is packed with the features tone tweakers have been asking for. The Tweaker-40 head offers the classic tonal characteristics of the original Tweaker with more than double the power, 6L6 tubes, and two independent channels, each with an expanded set of Tweaker switches.

The Tweaker-40's 11 onboard Tweaker switches provide a wide range of vintage tones, from ultra-pristine cleans to oversaturated leads. Use the USA/AC/BRIT switch to dial in your choice of American, British, or VX EQ. The Hot/Clean selector takes you on a journey from low to high gain, while the Vintage/Modern switch transforms the amp's feel from classic rock to modern edge. The Mid Cut switch sculpts the critical midrange while Egnater's signature Tight and Bright switches let you shape the low and high-end.

  • 40-watt, all-tube amp head

For whatever reason, I had been shying away from Egnater, just glossing over it as I read reviews and looked at products. I just didn't identify with the branding and couldn't decide how I felt about it. Yet, so many forums have people raving about the Tweaker.

So, I went to the store and I plugged into the Tweaker 40 and realized what all the fuss was about. It's is really impressive for the price. I've owned a VOX AC15CC1, Blues Jr. III, Jet City 2112RC, VOX AC4, ValveKing, and Peavey Classic 50, and the Tweaker is my all-time favorite for one main reason. All the amps above, I can dial in very similar 'feel' and tone with the Tweaker 40. It's as if I have all those amp's characteristics at my fingertips!

If you haven't played a Tweaker, do yourself a favor, take the time, drive as far as you have to, and play this amp. Bring your money. You just might need it!
Most notably a feature that captured my attention is the footswitch. It allows you to change channels from 1 to 2 (of course), but it also has a switch that turns on or off the effects loop route. So, I can put my delay or reverb pedal on the amp in the loop and turn it on or off from the footswitch from 20 feet away.

The switches aren't just gimmicky. Each switch adds a unique change in the tone. The EQ is shared but I feel they are more used to shape the overall output, not each channel.

The two channels are actually exactly the same circuitry path. So, you could have clean/clean, clean/heavy, heavy/clean or anything inbetween. If you wanted you could make channel one dirty and channel 2 dirtier and just use it like a 'boost'. If you want a "fender" sound and a "marshall" sound, you can bounce between them. You're not 'stuck' with either clean or dirty on either channel. Very cool!

For a solid tube amp, there are so many eye-opening features which are sweet for a guy like me who is always desiring different sounds.
The build construction is sturdy. The head is heavey in a good way, but not awkward. Feels solid. Looks beautiful, with that "orange amps" looking weaved baffle. The power tubes are "ruby tubes" 6L6GC with Egnater painted on them. I don't know what the AX7s are because they are covered in shields and I haven't opened the amp yet. I think they sound fine. They are quiet, no humming, noticeable micro phonics or cracking/thumping. The knobs feel firm unlike other budget tube amps I've owned. The various tweaker switches feel firm. Looking into the amp, it's built solid with a simple layout. I'm very satisfied with the quality/build.
Well, I picked this up with a great deal, $150 off of any purchase $750 or more. The amp was about $480 after discounts. But, I would pay $600 for it again if I had to. It's well worth it and features are useful.

With 2 channels and 4 independent switches on each channel and 3 modes for the eq and a buffered effects loop with footswitchable on\off there is no sound you cant reach with this head. The reachable sound is endless and if you seek a different tone all the time I strongly urge you to consider this head. I will become your favorite
Make your guitar rig sound like any amp that you want at the flip of a mini toggle. There are switches for any change you want like bass responce, mid attack, bright highs, or gain settings. The only thing I would change is the tweakable settings for the eq are shared so you cannot set channel one at usa to get that fender clean and channel two at British to get the Marshall mid driven drive. But that is a low concern since you can tweak the channels so much as it is. The next great thing is the buffered effects loop that is foot switchable. I love the effects loop. I had to reconfigure my whole pedalboard for this head because so much more was possible with this beautiful monster. One example for the loop is that my mxr carbon copy delay does not spill over when turned off, but, if I turn the foot sitch for the loop bypass the delay pedal will finish what its doing while I go on to new riffs. Super sweet.
Its an Egnater! I have gigged with this amp head as my primary rig since it came out and have never had a problem. I changed the stock tubes to jj tubes 6L6 and biased the amp myself with the simplified test points that Egnater had put on the board. Best amp I have ever played PERIOD.
You cant even buy 2 tweaker 15 heads for this price. Best value. Bravo Egnater Bravo.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have been using this amp now for about one year. I have found it to be very tweakable for clean to moderate gain sounds, but a little too "ragged" sounding at high gain levels. Since gain and tone are all relative, I'll tell you what I've found in terms of familiar music. I can get nice Stevie Ray Vaughn sounds with this and a Tube Screamer. I have gotten some nice Doobie Brothers sounds (Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music"). I've gotten nice Jackson Browne "Running on Empty" sounds. I tried Joe Bonamassa-like tones and found the amp not smooth enough. I've gotten nice almost acoustic sounds with this as well. Overall a nice mid powered amp. Great buy for the money. Sits more in the Fender camp to my ears. I compared it to a Fender HR DeVille 2x12 and was able to dial the same sound (but NOT with the Egnater speaker cab, which was very heavy in upper mids)and bought this for versatility. I play it through an AX-84 design oversize 1x12 with Eminence Govn'r with good results. Also thru a Marshall 1936 cab loaded with Scumbacks with fantastic results. I don't play metal, so I can't speak to that. It is by nature "scooped" sounding to my ears, so maybe OK. Makes a nice studio piece because of versatility and its very quiet, even on higher gain settings. I don't like most amp reverbs so no loss there. I use a Hall of Fame pedal in the loop with very good results.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The same story as many here. A broken Power transformer. I have TWO tweaker 40's. The same happened on both. I left them powered on while having a rehearsal brake. When I returned, the amp was dead. When the first died, The tweaker 40 was relatively new on the market, and Egnater shipped me a New transformer straight away. I changed it myself. When the second broke, the PT-trouble had hit the fan, and I found a lot of these stories on the net. However - the amp was still within warrany, and I expected Egnater to follow up. After several mails, they agreed upon sending me a New PT - but only if I paid the shipment - which I did (USD237 UPS to Norway...) After two days, I received mail from UPS, who returned the shipment because Egnater had forgotten to put a formal Invoice With the shipment. I have mailed them repeatedly after this - and Egnater just ignore me. So good fellows guitarists: Keep away from this product, and please tell them about my experience whenever you get the chance!

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

As far as playing classic rock style songs (which is my experience), this is a really fun amp with a great sound. There's a lot of settings to play with. At first, I wasn't sure I liked the overdriven sounds. But once I took some time to really explore, I've been able to get a wide range of tones.

As for the volume, I've had no problem keeping a clean tone (playing mostly in bars).

After having the amp for a little over a year, the only issue I've had is the power transformer dying. From what I can tell this is a common issue. In my case, since it's still in warranty, Egnater is upgrading the transformer.

      Pros:
-You can get a wide range of sounds, from the clean Vox sound of the Beatles to a bluesy Fender tone, to a crunchy Marshall sound.
-The two identical channels give you a lot of freedom to control your sound via the footswitch

      Cons
-Expect to have an issue with the power transformer at some point. It is a known issue that will be upgraded if it fails while the warranty is still good

I really like this amp, however; the transformer did blow out on it just like it did for everyone else. I sent it in an they fixed it under warranty. Other than that It is a sweet amp. I have even been able to get some sick metal tones out of it... even though it is not a metal amp.

Update to my original review.. pay attention

My tweaker 40 transformer fried ( a common problem) but now the Horror Story. Egnater refuses to even look at it because it is out of warrantee. secondly I found out by a amp repair person that these amps are non-servicable except for the power transformers... all the circuitry is microciruits and surface mounted tech. I had 2 peavey amps die on me in the past.. way way way out of the warrantee period and peavey still fixed them.. all I had toy do was pay the shipping cost to and from the repair facility in Tn. Egnater should at least repair out of warrantee amps... the other thing that bothers me is even a third party replacement cost about two bills.. pretty pricy DIY repair.

Finally found an amp I really like....
Very tweakable as the name implys. I get the grins every time I plug in. Paired it with the matching 212 cab. A bit bassy, but opens up real nice past 6. I don't recommend standing in front of it without ear protection, however.
Still in the honeymoon phase of our relationship, and can't comment as to reliability just yet. If she holds up, I have a good feeling about working with this amplifier. So many great tone variations, I think it will be hard to get bored with it. Takes pedals well too. One nice feature is the footswitch has a effects loop on/off button. Never had an amp with this feature, but I dig it!
For the price, I say buy one and see for yourself

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Besides all the accolades tossed at the 40 . No one really mentioned that both channels are identical.. You dont usually find this in amps.. You inherently get a clean and a dirty channel... whats nice about 2 identical channels is that you can dial them both in and customize them the way you want.. If you want to play a tune that has a clean tone and switch to a bluesy tone on the fly you can.Or you can go from clean to dirty .. or any two different tones you can think of.. the only limits is that you cant get really dirty without a ds3 or simular effects pedal. And another thing is 40 tube watts pushing 1 or 2 4x12 cabs is very very load.. almost as loud as 100 watts.. remember it takes 10x the power to get 2x the volume..

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I wanted to follow up my original review from January as I have been able to log some hours with the amp since then. All my primary expectations and thoughts are still constant, but wanted to add to those. You know, it's a funny thing about tone - elusive yet deceptively complex in its simplicity, and this is the area that motivated me to follow up. After using the amp at gigs and practices for several months, I am convinced that I have only scratched the surface with the tonal palette of this amp. I use a Std Tele with duncan vintage hot rod tele pickups, and a PRS SE Singlecut. The amp is happy with both instruments, and half the time I don't even bother toggling any of the tweaker switches when I change guitars. The knobs are actually responsive - not affecting things in an exponential curve like most other amps I have owned, but really seem to add a linear effect as you turn them if that makes sense. The sweet spot (at least in my application) seems to happen when the main volume knob is between 11 and 1 o'clock. Once you hit 11 o'clock, the power tubes seem to be getting enough of what they need to come alive, and you can use the gain control to dial in just a tad of tube compression or some real growl if you want. Definition has not seemed to be a problem - notes are articulate and clear, and the amp responds well to use of the guitar volume knob - a feature I haven't really enjoyed since the '70s. I do not regret the purchase in the least, and will likely be adding another 112x cabinet - dual purpose there- move more air and elevate the head so the old man don't have to bend over so far to make a tweak if he wants to.

I played in a hardcore band and owned a Peavey 6505 head. The band broke up so all I was playing was Praise & Worship at church, so I sold my Peavey and bought this head along with the Tourmaster 2x12. Well about a year and a half later my old band wanted to get together and start playing again. My first thought was I'm going to have to sell or trade this head for a heavier one. WRONG! I brought it to our first practice in a year and a half and it kept up with a Marshall JCM 2000 with a 1960A 4x12. I was shocked to say the least. If you are looking for a really versatile head on a budget, THIS IS IT!
