For whatever reason, I had been shying away from Egnater, just glossing over it as I read reviews and looked at products. I just didn't identify with the branding and couldn't decide how I felt about it. Yet, so many forums have people raving about the Tweaker.
So, I went to the store and I plugged into the Tweaker 40 and realized what all the fuss was about. It's is really impressive for the price. I've owned a VOX AC15CC1, Blues Jr. III, Jet City 2112RC, VOX AC4, ValveKing, and Peavey Classic 50, and the Tweaker is my all-time favorite for one main reason. All the amps above, I can dial in very similar 'feel' and tone with the Tweaker 40. It's as if I have all those amp's characteristics at my fingertips!
If you haven't played a Tweaker, do yourself a favor, take the time, drive as far as you have to, and play this amp. Bring your money. You just might need it!
Most notably a feature that captured my attention is the footswitch. It allows you to change channels from 1 to 2 (of course), but it also has a switch that turns on or off the effects loop route. So, I can put my delay or reverb pedal on the amp in the loop and turn it on or off from the footswitch from 20 feet away.
The switches aren't just gimmicky. Each switch adds a unique change in the tone. The EQ is shared but I feel they are more used to shape the overall output, not each channel.
The two channels are actually exactly the same circuitry path. So, you could have clean/clean, clean/heavy, heavy/clean or anything inbetween. If you wanted you could make channel one dirty and channel 2 dirtier and just use it like a 'boost'. If you want a "fender" sound and a "marshall" sound, you can bounce between them. You're not 'stuck' with either clean or dirty on either channel. Very cool!
For a solid tube amp, there are so many eye-opening features which are sweet for a guy like me who is always desiring different sounds.
The build construction is sturdy. The head is heavey in a good way, but not awkward. Feels solid. Looks beautiful, with that "orange amps" looking weaved baffle. The power tubes are "ruby tubes" 6L6GC with Egnater painted on them. I don't know what the AX7s are because they are covered in shields and I haven't opened the amp yet. I think they sound fine. They are quiet, no humming, noticeable micro phonics or cracking/thumping. The knobs feel firm unlike other budget tube amps I've owned. The various tweaker switches feel firm. Looking into the amp, it's built solid with a simple layout. I'm very satisfied with the quality/build.
Well, I picked this up with a great deal, $150 off of any purchase $750 or more. The amp was about $480 after discounts. But, I would pay $600 for it again if I had to. It's well worth it and features are useful.

With 2 channels and 4 independent switches on each channel and 3 modes for the eq and a buffered effects loop with footswitchable on\off there is no sound you cant reach with this head. The reachable sound is endless and if you seek a different tone all the time I strongly urge you to consider this head. I will become your favorite
Make your guitar rig sound like any amp that you want at the flip of a mini toggle. There are switches for any change you want like bass responce, mid attack, bright highs, or gain settings. The only thing I would change is the tweakable settings for the eq are shared so you cannot set channel one at usa to get that fender clean and channel two at British to get the Marshall mid driven drive. But that is a low concern since you can tweak the channels so much as it is. The next great thing is the buffered effects loop that is foot switchable. I love the effects loop. I had to reconfigure my whole pedalboard for this head because so much more was possible with this beautiful monster. One example for the loop is that my mxr carbon copy delay does not spill over when turned off, but, if I turn the foot sitch for the loop bypass the delay pedal will finish what its doing while I go on to new riffs. Super sweet.
Its an Egnater! I have gigged with this amp head as my primary rig since it came out and have never had a problem. I changed the stock tubes to jj tubes 6L6 and biased the amp myself with the simplified test points that Egnater had put on the board. Best amp I have ever played PERIOD.
You cant even buy 2 tweaker 15 heads for this price. Best value. Bravo Egnater Bravo.

Besides all the accolades tossed at the 40 . No one really mentioned that both channels are identical.. You dont usually find this in amps.. You inherently get a clean and a dirty channel... whats nice about 2 identical channels is that you can dial them both in and customize them the way you want.. If you want to play a tune that has a clean tone and switch to a bluesy tone on the fly you can.Or you can go from clean to dirty .. or any two different tones you can think of.. the only limits is that you cant get really dirty without a ds3 or simular effects pedal. And another thing is 40 tube watts pushing 1 or 2 4x12 cabs is very very load.. almost as loud as 100 watts.. remember it takes 10x the power to get 2x the volume..

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
I wanted to follow up my original review from January as I have been able to log some hours with the amp since then. All my primary expectations and thoughts are still constant, but wanted to add to those. You know, it's a funny thing about tone - elusive yet deceptively complex in its simplicity, and this is the area that motivated me to follow up. After using the amp at gigs and practices for several months, I am convinced that I have only scratched the surface with the tonal palette of this amp. I use a Std Tele with duncan vintage hot rod tele pickups, and a PRS SE Singlecut. The amp is happy with both instruments, and half the time I don't even bother toggling any of the tweaker switches when I change guitars. The knobs are actually responsive - not affecting things in an exponential curve like most other amps I have owned, but really seem to add a linear effect as you turn them if that makes sense. The sweet spot (at least in my application) seems to happen when the main volume knob is between 11 and 1 o'clock. Once you hit 11 o'clock, the power tubes seem to be getting enough of what they need to come alive, and you can use the gain control to dial in just a tad of tube compression or some real growl if you want. Definition has not seemed to be a problem - notes are articulate and clear, and the amp responds well to use of the guitar volume knob - a feature I haven't really enjoyed since the '70s. I do not regret the purchase in the least, and will likely be adding another 112x cabinet - dual purpose there- move more air and elevate the head so the old man don't have to bend over so far to make a tweak if he wants to.

I played in a hardcore band and owned a Peavey 6505 head. The band broke up so all I was playing was Praise & Worship at church, so I sold my Peavey and bought this head along with the Tourmaster 2x12. Well about a year and a half later my old band wanted to get together and start playing again. My first thought was I'm going to have to sell or trade this head for a heavier one. WRONG! I brought it to our first practice in a year and a half and it kept up with a Marshall JCM 2000 with a 1960A 4x12. I was shocked to say the least. If you are looking for a really versatile head on a budget, THIS IS IT!

I worked with this amp 2 days and could'nt get a good clean sound. If the band was playing Black Sabbath all nite, would work great! Played it thru a Dr.Z Z-Best 2X12, Dz.Z 1X12 with Celestion Gold and unplugged the speaker in my Mesa Express 5:50 combo. The combo sounded the best. Used a Gibson Les Paul Elegant, a custom shop guitar that, new in 2000, was $3500, and an Epiphone Les Paul. The Gibson ,ofcourse, sounded alot better and I think an awesome guitar is what this head needs. So.... Worked with it Wednesday and Thursday, boxed it up and sent it back Monday. Yes.. The price is low, but I've descided to take that money and save for something with better sound quality.

I love the tone, but after 7 months of use, and that being less than twenty hours total, the power transformer went out. My emails are not being returned regarding warranty repair so I am spending $$$ to professionally repair it. I am not the only one, this is a problem with these amps. Buyer beware. The tone is nice though.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
It is with a somewhat heavy heart that I write this review. I have largely used fender amps since the mid to late '60s, with a few deviations along the way- Sunn, GK, Marshall etc, but I always returned ' to the fold/fender.' I made the decision a year or two ago that if I wanted to keep playing out, I would need something that I could lug around a bit easier. 45 years of schlepping and humping gear has unfortunately taken its toll, and to continue means getting something smaller and lighter, but being self admittedly narrow minded and optionated, I did not want to make the slightest compromise in tone or usability. Enter Egnater. I was marginally familiar with the brand, and they were recommended to me by a colleague with much passion. After spending some time checking one out while my son lost himself in the magical world of various vocoders, I decided this was a serious contender. After putting in some overtime during the holidays I used the fruits of my labor to pick up the tweaker 40 head and matching 112x cabinet. This was absolutely the right choice for me. The number of usable tones at my fingertips, the portability, it's all there. Great headroom, plenty of sparkle on the high end if desired. I play in a classic rock cover band and this amp allows me to get close enough to classic tones that I doubt anyone will demand their money back because of the way the amp sounds. I love the versatility, and the shared eq and amp voicing does not bother me near as much as I was afraid it would. From dynamically responsive breakup to crunch and grind, its difficult to ask for any more at this price point. At he onset of my search, I was really wanting fender to make a deluxe reverb head, complete with reverb tank and tremolo (are you listening fender?) but dismissed that notion as fantasy. The lack of reverb and tremolo is not an issue due to the extremely usable efx loop, complete with line or instrument level options. Very nice. It takes pedals nicely and can handle all but death metal chores. Leaving fender behind after all these years for this amp is... Different. With a lesser amp I would care more, but make no mistake, this is a great variation on a tried and true circuit. Try it. Don't be afraid to listen to your ears.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
Okay I have owned this bad boy for a year now, and let me tell you it gets me any tone I desire. I run a Vox Tonelab EX through the effects loop to get my effects, and very rarely do I ever play with the vox amp settings, the Egnater can handle all those by itself. I also recently added my Mesa Boogie V-Twin Pre through it for an additional 3 channels. I couldn't dream of owning anything but my Egnater, except maybe a Mesa Mark V, but for this price range you should own 5, because I believe they could sell for a $1500 or more. This is one impressive amp, ask any Egnater owner how they feel about there amp. They will recommend one in a heartbeat.
Comments about Egnater Tweaker-40 40W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
I originally bought the Tweaker 15 head, but although it sounds good it really couldn't do a clean sound at any volume (the power tubes would start distorting, and it didn't have the THUMP I was used to from my Fender Twin. So that's now my studio amp. I liked the 15 enough that I just upgraded to the 40, and BOY was that the right decision. 40w is enough guts to do lovely clean sounds without edging into overdrive, but once you get the power stage cooking, this thing is gnarly. I suspect it doesn't have enough gain for metal heads without pedals in front of it, but who cares? It covers the Fender, Vox and Marshall bases with ease. I love it.
Support from Egnater is excellent -- just call the number and the guy who answers the phone knows everything about the amps.
How can you not give this five stars -- two channels, footswitch, each channel has hot/clean, modern/vintage, 3 tone stack voicings, mid scoop, bright/normal, tight/deep bass. Plus 4/8/16 ohm speaker outs (x2) and line/inst settings on the FX loop. Crazy.
Beautifully built -- very clean inside. I just knocked one point off for the Egnater-branded Ruby Tube 6L6s -- they sound find but I've had reliability issues with Ruby Tubes in the past. The 3 12AX7s (pre-amp, phase inverter, FX loop) are all Tung Sol, which I feel much better about
How can you go wrong? It's near impossible to get a bad sound of this amp; it's loud enough (easily) to keep up with a drummer, even on clean settings, and it can do pretty much *anything* you want it to. For the price, there's nothing that comes close.
