OVERVIEW

15W and multiple voicing switches make it a tone tweaker's dream!

The ultracompact 15W Egnater Tweaker amp head is all-tube amazing. The Egnater head serves up unique and sophisticated all-tube tone with seemingly endless variations via onboard "Tweaker" selector switches. Powered by a pair of 6V6 power tubes, the Egnater Tweaker is a perfect choice for a gigging micro amp.

The amp head's gain, EQ, and master sections each have a Tweaker switch providing a wide range of tones from the ultra smooth and satisfying to fully over-saturated for playing leads.

Hidden inside the Egnater Tweaker head is a vast array of tones not usually found in amps with such a compact design. Each of the 5 toggle switches on the front changes the head's character. The Tight and Bright switches shape the low and high end from soft and smooth to punchy and aggressive. The Gain switch goes from sparkly clean to an all-out high-gain assault. The EQ switch selects from pristine American to classic Brit and even the illusive VX AC sound. The Classic/Modern voicing switch delivers either soft and smooth or hard and edgy power tube tone. It's all in there to satisfy the ultimate "Tweaker."

Egnater's matching Tweaker 112X partially open-back cab boasts birch-ply construction. Egnater loads it with a Celestion G12H-30 speaker for vintage sound.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker Series Head and Tweaker 1x12 Half Stack:

My Tweaker 15 half stack is my primary gigging amp. I don't like a ton of stage volume, and in any case this little rig is a lot louder than you'd expect from 15 watts. Using an angled-back stand for the cab, I can point it at my ear level and hear myself just fine w/o having to have guitar in the monitors. Hang an e906 in front of the speaker, and good to go.

This rig's best feature is the broad range of useful tones. The various toggles and knobs actually DO something. Since I switch up between twp very different guitars (ES-335 to G&L SC2) in our current live sets, making a couple-three quick changes gets each guitar into its sweet spot and at the right volume easily. Foot-switchability would be even better, but it's quick enough.

The gain control is particularly well done. There's some real range, not the "all or nothing" thing that a lot of amps' gain controls give. The Vintage/Modern voicing toggle offers distinct differences, as well.

This rig takes pedals nicely. I use both individual stompboxes (recording) and an M13 (live...don't hate!), and both sound good.

The one thing I dinged it a little on was that the lower ranges on the Master Volume aren't as useful as I hoped they would be when using the Gain. There's a big, non-linear jump in volume in the first quarter of the dial's movement. Not only does this jump bypass the volume I really wanted (for apartment playing), but the tone on the low side of that volume jump isn't nearly as good as the tone AFTER the jump. Not a problem on stage or even recording, but for those who have to be concerned about volume at times, it's not an ideal practice amp.

Bottom line: a lot of great tones at a price that makes touring with it less nerve-wracking.

Comments about Egnater Tweaker Series Head and Tweaker 1x12 Half Stack:

I use this as one of my practice amps and I use the Tweaker 88 with the 2x12 cab as my gig rig. I love the tweaker series amps. This little guy will get super loud and sound great at any volume. The clean is lacking in comparison to a Blues Junior, but you can still get a good tone with it. The only downfall to this amp is that it is only one channel, so you have to stop playing to switch it over.

I have owned a Tweaker half stack for about a year. I run it with a Mesa Boogie F-50. THis Tweaker just ROCKS! Affordable! Super musical. It very nicelyimitates and old Marshall or vintage Fender amps faithfully. Vox and Matchless tones as well. Well made. Really freakin' LOUD too! Nice thick tones, I play Les Pauls (3), a Strat, a Jackson, a Charvel and 2 Ibanez's through it and it works great with all of them.

Cant believe a reviewer isn't getting enough gain out of his or is muddy. Play with the switches! The tight switch especially. I use single coils and the gain is over the top! Must have a rig problem. This thing has a ton of tones! I am amazed at the versatility.

            simple, versatile, must have

usa/ac/brit - no its not a twin, bassman, ac30 or plexi, but this small lunchbox opens up a variety of quality tones that will scratch the itch of most any tone you are looking for. For studio or stage- gotta love not hauling big ego rig amps. This may sound strange but I am a fan of the line6POD for the same reason, with a simple tool you can sample various tones that sounded good. Different tone brings out different playing styles and makes playing more fun..The tweaker accomplishes this same thing in analog format by providing various tone stacks and dynamic "tweaks"- If you cannot get a handful of great tones for most any style of playing from this amp with any reasonable guitar....hang it up, or get your ears checked.

            Amendment To My Previous Review

Comments about Egnater Tweaker Series Head and Tweaker 1x12 Half Stack:

After more tweaking (no pun intended), I'm beginning to realize that the amp isn't the problem. My pickups are the problem. They're Gibson '57 Classics. They aren't giving me the midrange I need. I'm going to swap them out for a new set, possibly the Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker set, or maybe a DiMarzio Norton in the Bridge and Breed in the neck. I'm still not sure. But I'll post another review of the amp after the pickup swap if possible.

I Should Have Shopped Around More...

Comments about Egnater Tweaker Series Head and Tweaker 1x12 Half Stack:

I bought the half stack right after Christmas this past year. It has a great tone, but overall, the amp isn't my cup of tea. I play aggressive hard rock and some metal, like Kiss, Zeppelin, and Dream Theater type music. The amp seems to be geared more toward classic rockers and blues players. I can't get a decent enough gain out of it no matter what I do. I don't use pedals, so I really rely on my amp's distortion. They say if you put it on the AC setting and cut the mids you get a metal tone, but it seems a bit muddy to me. And most of the other settings all sound the same to my ears. I have a Blackstar HT5 and I get great distorted and semi distorted tones out of it. Was hoping to have the same experience with this, but I should have gotten the HT20 instead. Bottom line, don't expect a high gain metal amp. If you want that, buy a Marshall/Mesa/Blackstar, etc.
