Granted it only has one rate knob and a 'color' (resonance) switch, but this box is extremely versatile. I recently sold my prized Boss PH-1r, a 22-year-old phaser that I was so cautious about using because of the rarity of it's condition that I would never keep it permanently in my loop. And to me the PH-3 is too digital and plastic sounding. So I bought this to have a mainstay Phaser on my board. It's amazing how many sounds you can get from the Stone, from slow, warm, vintage analog phases to creepy tremelo/vibrato-like effects.Features - 9 - one control and a switch. Plain, simple and easy to use and adjust. No more features are really needed on this one.Quality - 9 - Nothing's perfect, but this box comes close. It's very lightweight (like most EH stompboxes) which makes it feel cheap, but it's steel construction is very sturdy. The screw that holds the battery compartment door on has already stripped, after only a few changes. The soldering and wiring is decent though.Value - 11 - You will not find a better priced phaser anywhere near this quality.Overall - 10 - The best I've used or heard, and from other reviews it appears I am not alone. If you are looking for great phase, you need look no further.

I have owned several eh pedals and have always been satisfied with them. Until now. The phasing has very little differentiation in sounds you can obtain. The worst problem is when turning on the effect you basically lose 50% of volume, which is unacceptable especially when in a live gig situation. Don't waste your money on this p-o-s

Phase pedal that is all you need

    By kolinopin

    from Ventura,CA

I own and the Small Stone and have used it with many amps/effects and guitars. It brings out the Phase in a rich tone with two modes and a rate nob to speed the modulation. Many people are disappointed by the volume cut on the amp provided by the pedals bypass switch. But that's easy to take care of, just run a distortion/overdrive pedal through it. Overall the Small Stone is the best choice for analog phasing from Classic to modern guitar tones.

    Small yet Big

    By Mr. Laff

    from Redding, CA

I bought my first EH Small Stone in 1981. Loved it. I used it sparingly to maximize the effect. Many years later it finally died, yet I wasn't all too thrilled with the other phasers out there, so I went without for many more years. Then EH reissued this baby. Turn back the clock and let's rock old school style! Thanks EH for reissuing the Small Stone Phase Shifter!

    Best Phaser You Can Buy

    By rob5000x1

Well I've played the Boss Phaser and I didn't like it that much, it was nice but it sounded artificial. This pedal is rich and versatile even with its 2 color settings. All I can say is this is a must have no matter what kind of guitarist you are. It's simply beautiful...

    Gets the job done

    By John-qyu.b

I am very satisfied with this pedal. I am not a big fan of modulation effects so all I need is a basic affordable phase pedal. The tone of the small stone is a little watered down, although with the "color" switch you can make a different sound, unique to the small stone.

    Fun pedal

I would describe the Small Stone as "Friendly" :) It's very easy to use, and has a smooth sound. Granted, you can only use it on select songs, but it's great for Pink Floyd and a lot of rock stuff.

    Nails the sound!

    By Clint Stiles-VtQaH

I'm a bass player, and have used a DOD Phaser for the last 13 years as an aggressive effect, getting an "Unchained" (Chee Choo Choo Choo) effect. When my DOD finally died, I went looking for a replacement and was soreley disapointed in what I found on the market. DOD's are discontinued, so I tried every phaser out there looking for "that" sound. The Boss phasers sounded a bit too warbly for me, and the MXR's ( both old style and EVH) werent aggressive enough. And the Digitech Hyper Phase was nothing like the old DOD - lacking depth and and character. Then I stumbled on the Small Stone - and Boom - there was "the sound". I set the speed knob to about 10:00, set the color switch, and it nailed the old DOD sound. The metal casing is solid and substantial, and it's made in USA so you can't go wrong. Overall, a great pedal. The only thing that would make it better is if it had stereo outs.

    Very Good

    By Uknowit88

from You wish you could get at me, U.S.A.

This was the best decently priced phase that I could find. The sound is very organic and has a lot of depth to it. My only complant is that there is no volume adjust knob. It'd be cool to be able to turn the volume down when the switch is up and turn the volume up when the switch is down.

Classic phasing sound, more controls would be nice

    By Anonymous

For about $75, the Small Stone is about as good a phaser as you are going to get. Many people would argue that a speed knob is all you need in a phaser--keeps it simple. The Small Stone goes a step further to add a color switch, which basically increases the depth of phasing to make it more pronounced at slower speeds and a space-jam warble at higher speeds. However, after using the pedal for a week or so, I found myself wanting to decrease the level of phasing, even when the color switch was set to minimum--the original signal was getting swallowed up by the deep level of phase. Either an additional knob to decrease the depth of phasing or a general level knob would solve this. You can find it on other pedals, such as Boss's phaser, but the sound may not be as good. Also, if you buy this and plan to power it with a daisy chain, you'll need an additional power converter, as it runs off a 1/8" end cable. I didn't realize this until I bought it, but the solution was simple: buy a $3 converter (Visual Sound makes one).

    A Must Have!

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

This pedal is very cool. It's simplicity is the big seller for this type pedal. It has one knob to adjust the amount of Phase you want and a switch to add a little flavor/color. The price is right and the quality of the pedal is very good. I'd suggest getting the adapter for it. It can be a little frustrating to change the battery all the time.
