This pedal is one of the most amazing distortion pedal's I've ever heard in a long time, I decided it was time to replace my Boss DS-1 for something more heavy metal in sound and characteristics.

I run this through the clean channel on my Marshall DSL100H through a 4x12 loaded with Vintage 30 speakers, with the volume to match the same volume as my amplifier and it absolutely rips! I use humbuckers as my pickups and I play in standard tuning and sometimes drop D tuning too.

Distortion Settings:
Around 7 O'clock on the distortion it gives you the nice classic rock tones from the early 70s. 8-9 O'clock gives you nice Deep Purple and Rainbow tones (think Ritchie Blackmore). 10-11 O'clock gives you Black Sabbath tones and with the Scoop switch you can get "Sweet Leaf" types of tones.

12-1 O'clock gives you very nice late 70s to 80s Heavy Metal tone (Think Randy Rhoads and early Dio albums). 2-3 O'clock will give you nice Metallica tones and anything past 3 O'clock will make you enter death metal tones, which is ideal if you are playing in C Standard tuning etc.

Other Notes:
If you plan to use really high distortion on this pedal at a high volume then you might need a Smartgate, this all depends on what amplifier you are using. The scoop switch can be good for cutting some of the mids out slightly or lots of it. but I prefer leaving it off when playing in a band. It's only cool to use if you want to mess around and have fun with it at home.

If you need more versatility such as more EQ options then look at it's big brother version that has more options.

To finish off this review, these pedals are designed to turn your clean channel into a really nice dirty sounding channel with nice note definition and clarity. I did try it through the Amps distortion channel but it did not sound good. I actually prefer the pedal through the clean channel than the actual amps distortion channel.

It's worth looking at for the price!

I bought this pedal in hopes of getting a decent metal sound and was very dissapointed. To get any kind of a decent sound out of it you have to basically eq your amp so that the highs are almost completely gone. After that it sounds mediocre at best but when you click it off everything else sounds bad because of the lack of highs. I would only reccomend this pedal to a beginner who has no idea what good tone is and just wants something cheap with high gain. Anyone else I would advise to stay away.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Pocket Metal Muff Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

By the way, I'm not a "plant" but a real customer. I can understand the reviewers here being split down the middle on this pedal; it's very intense as far as the effect it has on your tone, but that's also what makes it great if you're into a very heavy, creamy type sound, think Smashing Pumpkins' Today song only with more of a Sabbath-type tone instead of grunge fuzz. I have the scoop switch off, the controls set to 12 o'clock for rhythm tracks, and the distortion set to 2:00 for leads. My SG is fun to play again.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Pocket Metal Muff Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Ever wonder how many of the people in these reviews are plants? No way that many people think this is the greatest distortion box ever. There were only two people on the money. The one who said buy the biggest one, and the one who said the nano has uncontrolable treble. The main thing about the full-size is that it actually has an eq, so you can pull out all the treble, most of the midrange, and add a ton of bass. Then, you top boost for solos. I bought the nano hoping I could save space on my board since I'm not a hardcore metal player. Big mistake. I basically have to redo the sound of this by using it to drive a Bass Big Muff. That lets me eq it down to a bassy grind. Not bad in that I am using the same board space for two pedals now, but the metal sound is less desireable. My advice, if you want real metal tone, buy the big Metal Muff and drive a tube amp with it. It should get you where you want to go, short of a Marshall JCM900. If you are even semi-serious, get the XO at least. It has a tone knob that might save you from the trebly pain, and a top boost switch you could theoretically flip with your foot.

    Don't buy a DS-1 or a MT-2

    By Harshstar (Band)

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Pocket Metal Muff Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this muff awhile back because I was looking for something a bit more mellow w/ some warmth. My other distortions, Boss DS-1 and MT-2, are too scratchy overall and mask your tone. The treble on them is a bit ear splitting as well. So I decided to get this pedal simply because it had no eq capabilites and the ability to have some gain.I run a GE-7 Eq after this so I can eq both the clean thru my Ultimate Chorus and the pedal. This pedals sounds great if you turn the gain to 1 (1 out of 10) or .5, just a little bit. The trick is to increase the volume a lot afterwards and leave off the scooping entirely. I also use a DD-6, Rocktek Chorus, and Boss Trem, and a Crybaby. I play video game music covers so we do a lot of single note lines in 3 piece harmony; avoiding actual chords like the plague. So this pedal works for the heavier stuff by maintaining your pickup's tone; adding a little grit to your clean. If you turn the gain up all the way or use the scooping you'll be disappointed... just makes everything mush w/o clarity. I'm still looking for an overdrive pedal and a tube amp, but this pedal works well and makes you feel at home.

Wow I got to say good by to my metal zone, my death metal pedal (DOD) and good by to my mega distortion, because this pedal is amazing, it reminds me a bit of the distortion on a Krank head. This little thing is just perfect, I play it through my epiphone classic les paul and those two together are a doom/death metallers dream, I'm moving up to the full version once I sell all my other pedals.

This Muff is perfect for my playing. I play mostly blues through a Fender Blues deluxe amp. Once in a while I need to get my heavier side out and this pedal more than satifies. I love that this only has two knobs and a toggle for mid adjustments. Stomp the box for AC/DC, Early Aersomith, Metallica, etc. It is small but sturdy and Powerful. It will knock your socks off. Probably the best value in any pedal I have ever used.

this pedal is totally like whooa, i replaced my main distortion a rocktron metal planet pedal. its crazy because the rocktron you would figure having 4 more knobs than the MetalMuff would have better tonal capabilities but , no all it took was one click on this here muff and totally blew the metal planet out of the water and thats not an easy thing to do ,trust me ive played out many time with it(metal planet) for the past 2 years. this metal muff is a keeper and the leader in my distortion chain which includes the dod 250, the big muff and the digitech grunge. thank you electro harmonix for making this pedal for us metal heads!

I bought this pedal about 3 months ago, and I gotta say that it is by far my favorite distortion pedal I've ever bought. First I bought the Uber Metal, but that pedal was complete overkill and a joke to try to record with. You might be skeptical because of there only being 2 knobs, but EHX has done it again.

I bought this pedal a week ago at a local music shop and I could not believe my ears. It's lack of features is more than made up for by it's sound and versatility. Drop the distortion keep the volume cranked and you have a nice biting overdrive. Set the distortion to 12 O'clock and you have the classic sound of a marshall stack. Crank it all and set the mid scoop switch to high, and you have dimbag darrell's tone at your fingertips. I highly recomend this tiny behemoth.

This thing is so perfect, you don't need the larger ones with more knobs, this has THE sound. I use it for Rock although its made for metal but its good either way. Distortion at 12 Oclock for Rock or all the way for Metal. I use a 60watt Huges & Kettner amp and I used to like the overdrive channel but now I keep it on clean and use this, it is THE sound I was looking for with all the harmonics. Made in USA, I just wish the knobs were metal like the ones in the picture.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Pocket Metal Muff Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I don't actually have this one or the other one with three knobs. There's actually three E.H. Metal Muff pedals. The two on this web site are the smallest and the medium sized one. Get the biggest one with five knobs plus "TOP BOOST" knob and step on part for the TOP BOOST. Now the pedal I have(the biggest one), has the greatest darn sound I have ever heard in my nine years of playing guitar. It is good for any style, even jazz, buddy. But for metal and harder stuff this pedal has incredable highs and the heaviest lows ever found on one single distortion unit. The "TOP BOOST" literally puts the highs in heaven and gives your distortion/volume an unbelivably large boost of sound. I recommend this pedal over any and all distortion pedals out there. Puts the BOSS Mt-2 Metal Zone, Metal Core pedals in a tissue and blows snot all over them. Check it out...you'll never look back...and just might leave your girlfriend or your day-job in the past!

I was searching for a good crunchy sound to put with my guitar. (The distortion on the amp I have wasn't cutting it) I searched and searched and found this pedal. Great value for a pedal that can play all the metal you can give it. It's makes my standard strat sound like a hell demon! It's also about the size of a deck of poker cards! Just a great pedal for all your death metal and metalcore needs, and also a great price!

This pedal is off the hook, it can do just about anyting and all for just a few dollars.Settings:OVERDRIVE,,,between 8 & 11 o'clockDISTORTION,,,between 11 & 2 o'clockMETAL,,,You know the rest, JUST CRANK IT.The overdrive sounds just like early tube breakupthe distortion puts the DS-1 to shame, and the METAL anything after 2 o'clock on your dial gives you a nice thick grind, and im using it with a AXIS Sport w/P-90's, now i've only used it with tube amps ( VOX VR30, VR15, CRATE V5, FENDER Champion 600 and the EPI Valve Junior, you guessed it im a small amp kinda guy )and it sounds wonderful with all these different amps, and hardly any noise, almost none, another nice touch is the scoop switch it will change your tone however there will be a small drop in volume, no biggie, if you want a really good pedal and can't wait 5 years saving your milk money buy this EH NANO,,,YOU'LL HAVE ENOUGH CHANGE LEFT OVER FROM $100 DOLLARS TO TAKE YOUR GIRLFRIENDS BEST FRIEND TO THE MOVIES, MIGHT EVEN BE ABLE TO GET HER A SMALL POPCORN-KIDDING, Really its a great pedal. Outta here MjA

i bought this pedal for some over-the-top distortion in adition to all my many overdrives. i wanted a punchy, and consuming sound, and the compact-ness of this pedal (and the price) sold me. the sound however, is nothing i thought. its very buzzy and 80's metal sounding. weak sauce in my opinion. Someone also said that by turning the gain low, you could get just some overdriven sounds out of this thing. WRONG. definetly nothing clost to any decent overdrive here, just metal. so thats whats up.
