Electro-Harmonix

A brand new overdrive from EHX with tons of definition and headroom.

Tone aficionados kept telling EHX’s Mike Matthews about a pedal that had achieved a lot of buzz because it was only obtainable at an exorbitant price. That pedal was the Klon Centaur.
A believer in bringing great tools to starving musicians, Mike tasked his trusty team to create an affordable alternative, and that is how the Soul Food was cooked up.

The Soul Food delivers transparent overdrive with great touch and response. Its circuitry features boosted power rails to provide abundant headroom and increased definition. Best of all, you don’t have to be a rock star to own one!

Features
  • Transparent overdrive
  • Boosted power rails for extended headroom and definition
  • Super responsive
  • Compact, rugged design
  • Selectable true bypass or buffered bypass modes

Just got it today and you can Believe the hype. This is the best sounding distortion pedal I've ever used. I will add this caveat, I don't use many effects and never have. Until now the Maxxon OD9 was my favorite. I have, so far, used it on a 50 Watt JMP Mk 2 Master Model and I can only describe the sound as halfway between dimed JMP and the best sounding overdriven Orange amps. Its uncompressed with a fat midrange boost and a smooth, juicy saturated grind. The treble knob is actually useable across its whole taper. It made the neck pickup on my VOS Les Paul sound great at full on saturation levels. I tried it on a Fender 6G3 Brown Deluxe Clone - this is what I always hoped that amp could sound like "Brown" is the word. EHX products are high quality and made the USA. Do I recommend this pedal ? I will use up my next 5 recommnedations on this pedal

This is a very responsive pedal. Turn a knob a quarter of an inch and you have a very different tone. Unfortunately, it's an extremely limited pedal in terms of useful tones. Anything over 9 - 10 o'clock on the gain mushes your tone to a mid-rangey mess. I can't see this being a stand alone overdrive pedal, and it's a little too colored to be a good boost pedal.

I can see how folks compare this to the Klon - TONS of mids and warm overdrive.

I feel like I'm the only guy not to like this pedal so far. But, to be clear, I didn't rate it low because I didn't bond with it. I rated it low because it has limited usefulness and it muddies up tone. I think some folks might love it, but it's not my cup o' tea.

I couldn't fit a 9V battery in it (lid wouldn't completely shut) and all 4 philips head screw needed to be removed to do it. I used the wall wart on a gig. It had worked at home beforehand but the footswitch broke on the gig. I sent it back.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Im so very impressed with this pedal. all the other OD pedals ive used seemed to color the tone so much that it was obvious to me i was using a pedal, not with this pedal. the switch inside for true bypass/Buffer is amazing it actually makes my guitar sound less harsh a lot more warm and responsive when the pedal is off and set to buffer. when on its the perfect OD tone and pushes my amp so very nicely.if your thinking about buying one but not sure if its worth it , i have to say go for it you will love it. its a must have for my rig from now on.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is basically a booster pedal with an additional stage of overdrive. This is useful if you need some distortion on your acoustic guitar direct through a PA without an amp or if you have an older amp with no overdrive/distortion. I COULD NOT get a CLEAN BOOST (un-altered tone)out of the pedal. I find an LPB-1 type pedal, one with a single gain control, more suitable if you need a clean boost function.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Like almost every pedal I've ever tried, the best sounds are found at way less than full throttle on the knobs. I'm also fairly certain that a little patience dialing in a sound you like will yield a satisfying outcome. Great value for the price , too.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is a must have for any fans of traditional overdrive. It sounds very close to my dimed '77 Marshall JMP 2204, no kidding. Playing the Soul Food through a clean Fender combo at bedroom volume gets extremely close to sounds that I recorded with that Marshall.

One thing to note is that the pedal is VERY midrange heavy, and lacks some low end (a good thing for overdriven guitar IMHO). Modern metal players will probably want to pass on this one, but it would probably do well for Maiden, Priest, etc. The sweet spot is definitely 70's rock though, Queen, Stones, etc.

I love love love this pedal. Run it in front of a Blues JR, I now have a 2 channel amp. Can be completely transparent, kicks my amp from clean to overdrive without coloring the sound. Crank up the drive and you get some great saturation.

I receieved this and it wouldn't work with a battery. It did work with a wall wart. I didn't care for the sound and there was nothing Klon-like about it. I own around 25-30 good overdrives and boosters and this pedal just didn't have what I wanted to hear. I doubt the fact that the battery aspect not working had any effect on the unit as it worked fine with a power supply. I just couldn't find a sound that I liked or could use. I've been playing professionally for 43 years and have owned, used or tried just about everything on the market. Mike Matthews needs to re-think this one..
