This is my favorite pedal. It's a solid 10 to me. I primarily play a California made Fender Tele and a Gibson Melody Maker with dual single pick-ups through a Fender bassman. Both sound amazing with the effects on this box. My semi-hollow body Washburn HB30 sounds simply incredible with the Hall Reverb. When I go out and play with friends, I take only this pedal with me. It's that good.
The variety of reverb alone make this worth the money. If you like to play with grit and make it dirty this pedal has a lot to offer. I can add just enough color with slight fuzz and overdrive. If you are looking for a pedal to use with a class A tube amp and don't want to mess with a bunch of effects and multiple pedals, this is the perfect pedal.
Electro harmonix quality is the absolute best. You don't have to worry about a thing. It's USA made, need I say more.
It's USA made. But not the made in the USA price. Nice. That's value to me.

Let me just start by saying, I am huge Electro Harmonix guy, I respect them as a company and think they make some wonderful effect pedals. I currently use this pedal on my board along with the Big Muff and the Holy Grail Plus. But sadly this pedal, "The Holy Stain", has been reduced to a half-way decent Tremolo pedal, when it could be so much more. This pedal is missing one, possibly two key features which is stopping it from being totally bad ass. The most important being a true-clean switch, which would inhibit the secondary tonal effects; tone, color, and dirt, from always being engaged. I find myself very frustrated trying to set the tone and color knob to a place that doesn't drastically change my input signal. If there was a way to switch to a straight clean signal I could make affective use out of both reverbs, pitch shift, and Tremolo, when I don't want to change my tone or level of distortion. Better yet, if there was another mix knob for the tonal effects like there is with the reverb effects so that you could mix in the amount of fuzz/overdrive and tone you wish to use, that would be fantastic. I get it, this is a multi-effect pedal and the point is to be able to use the distortion with the reverb/tremolo with one stomp. But why does the overdrive and fuzz have to be either engaged to a preset level or off completely? The way the Fuzz is preset is utterly useless to me since the gain is so high it does nothing but give me insane feedback. I'd like to have another fuzz or overdriven distortion for certain things, but it looks like I'm just going to have to buy another pedal because I really can't use the ones on this pedal in their current state. ...Basically The Holy Stain is kind of lame, which is really disappointing because it has the potential to be pretty amazing.

Worst. Pedal. Ever.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Reverb choices are great. The Tremelo isn't bad. I can't really rate the pitch effect as I never have cared for that effect, although the fact it doesn't have an octave is odd.

The problems: NO CLEAN. Even on the clean setting--and especially the more you turn it up--you get added gain. I would like to be able to use just CLEAN REVERB w/no added anything else--can't do it with this pedal.

NOISY. Jeez, this is the noisest pedal I've EVER played through!

HUGE volume difference between the different gain settings. This is simply poor engineering/design.

This is odd... when set on Clean, with the pedal volume MAXED out... the overall volume is actually LOWERED when you engage the pedal! Seriously?

Sorry, can't recommend this pedal for anything other than a gimmick (reverb plus fuzz or drive can be an interesting effect, but the noise drove me crazy).

By far the worst electro harmonix pedal, and one of the worst pedals I have ever used in my effect chain. I expected more and was really let down. the fuzz is ok...I guess. All the other effects are terrible. I would not recomend this pedal to anyone.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Upon buying it and bringing it home, I realized that there were some things wrong with it. First off- after about 10 minutes of playing, the dsp effects switch from room, hall, pitch shift, and tremelo was getting stuck between 3 and 4 (pitch and trem). It would only bounce back between the two, and I'd have to pull the power adapter to reset it, then it would do the same thing again. It's a defective pedal I'm sure.Another thing, why in the world would they put distortion in a reverb pedal?? The ideas seems like overkill on the multi effects mix. The clean channel is 25% as loud as the fuzz and OD settings.Overall, I've decided to return this pedal and get the Line6 Verbzilla, sounds better and is more flexible with the one thing I wanted..reverb.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Maybe I misread the box. I thought that the box would allow 'multiple' effects at the same time. I read wrong. However, I can't complain, the effects are sweet!. I wish the pitch went up 1 more, and that you could combine the reverb with the tremelo, the tremelo with the pitch, etc. You can't, I misread the box. my bad.

A very special Christmas Present this year, I do absolutley LOVE this pedal! Use it on my board, and use it a lot. Overall you would be stupid not to have one! I will buy a dead crybaby to make an expression pedal for this thing too!The only thing I have to complain about, is with te DIRT feature, I wish their could be a switch like with the effects, that lets you choose by foot what DIRT you are going to use. Other than that, it is a home run out of the park for me!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Just got it an hour ago .Plugged it in and away it went into sonic heaven . Great verb ! It could have a little better "Drive" to it but, For what I need it for, it's just fine . I use 3 other EH pedals with it . Now I'll have to see where in the "chain" it works best . Nice unit . Strong , well built like the others . EH makes some nice products for sure . Another satisfied customer . Musician's Friend , you are the Greatest !

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I got this wanting a nice, but cheap reverb unit because I'm a budget. This thing is absolutely amazing! It can give you a small echo, a drowned-out sound, or make your sound so big. The reverbs are amazing. Tremolo is SICK! (go from small and wavy to hypnotic) The Pitch-Shift could better, it's tracking is a bit off but it works with some delay. The distortions are pretty great, only thing is i do not use them. You have to try this out, then BUY IT!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This box is the best multi-effect pedal I've got. Hands down it's the most versatile. The room and hall reverb are stunning! The Tremolo is awesome as well. Add to it that you can get distortion/fuzz and overdrive with it, what else do you need with a class A tube amp? That's what I use it for and its all I need. I don't really need it with my Fender Blues-deville 410 but with a boutique amp or any other class A small tube amp, this will give you everything it's intended for. It's made in NYC, USA and is solid metal, totally hardcore strong! The controls are up to you... you dial it in. The fact that you can boost and fuzz/distort on this thing over the clean, I don't believe is overkill, it's just plain value in saving on investing in yet another pedal. For any music I choose to play from 50's blues, surf, punk, 60's psych, to 70's hard rock, this thing is all I need. Not that I don't like a myriad of other textures and sounds but this one covers most all the basics. I'm really pleased with it, especially when I'm not wanting to bring along seven other pedals to a jam.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Like other reviews, I thought the pedal was defective, but It just has to be hooked up in series. I have a boss Noise Reducer which has an effect loop. It doesn't like that, and that was okay cause I just re-configured my pedals to all be in series and it works fine now. This pedal sounds really Great. It takes a while to get the hang of it, and you HAVE to read the manual, and it's very short. I got this pedal cause I've never had a Reverb pedal. I was prepared to be disappointed on the other features, but I was pleasantly suprised at the distortions. They are crunchy and punchy, and very organic and tube-like. This pedal makes me want to sell all my pedals and get all Electro Harmonix now!You cannot control the Gain Level on the distortions, but after a while, you don't want to. You can control their volume, and the tone controls are very extensive. You can get A LOT of different charactersitic with these controls. This pedal plays well with other pedals also. I put my sansamp pedal in front of it in reverb mode and distortion off, and got some awesome tones. This is a great additon to my pedal board! It sounds great by itself, and it adds another dimension to several of my other pedals.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This is a fun pedal. It definitely jumps in volume when you switch on the fuzz and drive. It EQ's nicely and the reverb is fantastic. Sure, it's difficult to find a sweet spot that all the channels will work on but I didn't expect it overcome that obstacle in a pedal in this price range. Seriously, it is fun. Do mix it up in your pedal line up because the tones change a bit.

fun and functional!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

Awesome sounds. There's a secret chorus sound in the pitch shift mode when you set amount knob to just past noon. Turn it just a tad more and you get a vibrato sound. Other than that the pitch shift function is really only good for making crazy sounds. The hall reverb turned full up is an awesome sound. My advice is to leave mix knob halfway for the most usable effects sounds, especially on the reverbs. the fuzz setting is big muffish. fuzz/drive amount is not adjustable on the pedal, keep that in mind. I have some demos of the pedal. I love this pedal!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I've demoed this thoroughly, it sounds great in many ways. The distorted sound is excellent, although you have to settle for one basic sound. Luckily it is crunchy and unique. The reverbs are very good, and the tremolo is fine. The pitch shift, to me, is only useful on a partially detuned setting, not very interesting otherwise. Also, the fact that you can't stack more than one sound together makes it a little retro, but still for the money this is a very nice package indeed. It could easily be your only pedal.

Even Better w/ EXP. Pedal

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I've owned this pedal for a coulpe of months now, and it's been a very versitle unit. You really can't unlease the full potential of this thing until you connect an expression pedal. It allows you to adjust the rate/intesity of both the hall and room reverb, tremelo and pitchshift. Think of the possibilities! The electronic are quiet. The fuzz & drive channel are good for some blues tones, but they are pretty thin sounding in comparison to most fuzz & drive pedals. The reverbs are lush, the pitchshift is pretty cool too. Ultimately, I think I'm going to end up using this for a tremelo effect in conjuntion with a EXP. pedal. The tremelo on this unit is somewhat limited, but I like the overall depth and sweep of the effect. If your looking for a surf trem, this is not the right pedal. The Holy Stain works great in any order on your pedal board. Overall, it's an amazing pedal for the price.

Good Reverb for the price

By Grandpa's Revenge

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

I bought this in the hopes of getting a good overdrive/distortion pedal with some reverb and trem. What I actually got was a really nice reverb/trem pedal that has some distortion overdrive capabilities. I use it a lot so I'm not complaining, but I think I would prefer to have the two features in separate pedals. I separated this pedal from my effects chain with a bypass switch because it is not a true-bypass unit and I find it to be a bit noisy with my BOSS CE-20. The variations on the reverb are really good. However, the distortion (fuzz) and overdrive are mediocre in my opinion (Better than a DS1 though). It's well built and a tough pedal, uses a standard 9V AC/DC adapter (No Battery Compartment) with negative center pin so you can use your other pedals and daisy chain your power. I recommend the 1-spot power connectors as they are right angle and there is more space between the connectors than the BOSS. Overall, a good pedal for the price but I would not have bought it had I only been looking for overdrive/distortion.

this pedal effect is so powerfull and versatil, if you need a reverb or tremolo and strong overdrive sound don`t prove another one, the only problem is a defficient control of overdrive or fuzz intensity.

AWESOME Pedal

By Sly Poonce

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This is my first EH pedal and I'm amazed. I've been searching for this fuzz tone for a long time. I played a Nashville Tele and Gretsch Electromatic through a Hot Rod Deville 4x10 with this and the quality of every feature on this pedal is impeccable. I'd highly suggest it. Especially for this price. My only issue is the fact I can't combine the mods. But honestly, it's not necessary. If this pedal even crosses your mind.. get it, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Good pedal, but try before you buy

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Holy Stain Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal:

This is a good, high quality pedal at a decent price. However there are a few things you should know. The Holy Stain multi effects pedal is just that, a multi effects pedal. Here's how it works. There are four different settings, room reverb, hall reverb, pitch shift, and tremolo. With each setting you can choose between clean, fuzz, or drive. Besides that you have a Mix, Amount, and Tone knobs to control the primary effect and than a Color knob for the Dirt setting. On top of everything you have a Volume knob. Both reverbs are good and similar to the EH Holy Grail. The Mix and Amount settings give you plenty of options to create great verb sounds. The pitch shift in my opinion is a piece crap and a waste of space on the pedal. You can't do full octives and regardless of what you do it sounds bad.The tremolo is a like the EH Pulsar which is good. Again the Mix and Amount knobs alow a vast variety of tremolo effects. The Drive secondary effects give you more tonal possibilites but also run into some problems. All three settings (Clean, Fuzz, and Drive) sound good but like most drive pedals the Fuzz and Drive settings are somewhat noisy. The Clean channel doesn't change the sound at all while the Fuzz sounds a whole like the Big Muff. My biggest complaint is the lack of control over the Fuzz and Drive because you can't change the amount of either, it's just set. Also these channels run quite a bit louder than the clean. Overal though these are fun to play with.In conclusion for $100 you get to play with the Holy Grail, Pulsar, Big Muff, and then some. Good for a first pedal because you get lots to play with and than when you get more pedals you can still use one or two settings are your board. I use it mostly for reverb now. EH makes great pedals and this isn't an exception. Be sure to try it before you buy it though to make sure it's what you're looking for.
