I play jazz guitar. One of my favorie guitars is a Gibson ES175 with one P90 single coil pickup. Love the tone but hate the 60HZ hum. I do not use any pedals and go for a really clean tone. I tried the ISP Decimator and the Boss NS-2 to rid the hum but being that they are noise gates they don't work well on pedal free guitar tone. They are more for getting rid of noisy pedal hum. The EH Hum Debugger works perfect. My P90 is now quiet as a church mouse with no effect on natural tone or sustain. I love it. My only complaint is it is made out of cheap looking steel and for the price you pay for it they could have put a nice coat of paint on it. It is a bit of a eye sore but it works fantastic. If you want clean and quiet single coil tone buy one !!!

Well it works. I tried it on a Rhodes piano, Clavinet, and guitar. It was remarkable on the Clavinet. It got rid of the nasty hum. Only one problem, I noticed one note in the higher range of the keyboard was very faint. Did the same thing with the Rhodes and it was the same note. Upon closely comparing the effect to bypass signal, there is a nasal quality to the sound over all. At certain higher notes there is almost a canceling effect. It does work, but for me I can't take the side effects. The tone is almost missing something when this pedal is on. When its bypassed, the signal becomes so much fuller and true. Some people may not notice, or care. For me, its not worth the trade off. Still Electro Harmonix did produce a very unique pedal. For certain situations it would be welcomed to get rid of the bloody hum. There is nothing out there that does what this pedal does.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this product as a last ditch effort to tame the noise on my carvin v3m's distortion set with a high drive. With one kick of the pedal... Perfect silence. I was amazed. I read other people's reviews talking about color added to the sound... But I was please that there was no noticeable difference. This is a must have for every guitarist. The only negative with this pedal is that it must be powered by its own power supply. So instead of plugging it into my voodoo labs pedal power supply, it has to be run separately. I'd rate this as a 9.5 out of 10... And if they could get this to work off a 9v... A perfect 10!

            too much colour for me

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

It does what it claims, LOWERS the hum/buzz/hiss level, but with way too much colouration.

I play all single coils (2 G&L's with standard Strat/Tele style pu's and a Hamer Vanguard with P90's) thru an early US made Fender Pro Jr and a gorgeous Reeves Custom 10HG with Weber loaded 1x12 cab. The buzz and 60cycle hum I endure on a daily basis would make most modern guitarists cringe.
While the Hum Debugger lifted the noise considerably it also ruined the sound of these Class A tube amps. The Fender became unbearably shrill and the Reeves sounded like it was inside of a damp aluminum can. Very odd and hard to describe the tinny-ness of the resulting tone.
Perhaps if you use massive chains of stomp-boxes and you're noise issue is of a different nature than mine this may be the solution for you. Not for me. I'm not much of an FX fan. Tone is in your fingers and your gear.
not many. on off, normal-strong lift...
            seems good
            a bit pricey

Works fine. On the strong setting it seems to affect the tone somewhat. I only use on normal
because it's all thats needed in my case. Does
seem to add a weird fuzzy noise to the signal
but it's very faint and can't be heard while
            playing.

I've tried for years to remove single coil hum. Attenuators, shielding, new pickups, you name it. Sometimes it's been so bad that even humbuckers hummed!

This device fixed it first time. Easy to use, easy to hear.

Penalties? A slight nasal effect to the tone, but hey...that's a lot better than hum and can be generally fixed by tweaking a tone control.

If you have hum from your guitar....get this box.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

First, what this is not- this will not remove the noise from an effects pedal or clean up tube humm in the EH Wiggler or other tube driven effect. Conisder using an effects loop for that. It will however perfectly remove the 60 cycle hum from single coil pickups in strat positions 1,3 and 5 or perhaps P-90's on an old Les Paul. So if you value hot Tex Mex single coils or a vintage P-90 this will allow you to keep that specific tone intact without moving to noiseless pickups.

Works as advertised. My Les Paul Jr. is one of my favorite guitars, but I've always found the hum distracting in live situations. In a fit, I added a debugger to my pedalboard, and was able to play my Junior all night at a recent gig.
This is a great and effective product for eliminating single coil pickup hum.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Electro Harmonix Hum Debugger pedal is essential to your rig if you have single coil pickups and want to remove 60 cycle hum from your tone. With my simple setup I haven't noticed any loss of tone quality. Now I have the best of both worlds, vintatge Strat pickups with no noise. This pedal really works.
I recently switched out my noiseless pickups on my Strat for some Texas Specials which are very hot and produce alot of the typical 60 cycle hum found in all single coil pickups. I play in a church that has old wiring and computer/projectors nearby and the hum became very noticeable. I bought the Hum Debugger plugged it in and no hum! This pedal is amazing. Some folks have said that it colors your sound slightly but I haven't noticed any difference and I am a tone fiend. My rig is simple, just a tube screamer and a delay pedal. As for features, its either on or off. There is a strong setting but I found it wasn't necessary to use.
Seems to be well built and solid. EH has a good reputation for high quality products.
$120 might seem pricey but having no 60 cycle hum is well worth the cost.

I don't think I'll go without one of these again. I had 2 single coils that had horrible hum under lights and around poorly wired stages. Now you can't tell my bass is even on, it is so quiet and this is on "normal" on "strong" it seemed to take down some harmonics I wanted. The only difference in my sound when this is turned on is the reduction or noise, no loss of tone. This really should be a smaller pedal, and 9v standard power would be nice, but this is the EHX way of doing things.

                      Single-Coils Hum No More...

                      By 84188375

                      from St. Louis

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

Overall this is a great pedal. The hum cancelling is superb, but you may need to experiment with the order of your pedals if you plan on putting this in your daisy chain. Be cautious when using the "Normal/Strong" toggle switch as it is a little weak feeling.
As far as features go, the Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger has few. The pedal has an on/off stomp switch and a toggle switch to switch between "Normal" and "Strong" hum canceling. Though, all this pedal needs to do is cancel hum, more settings for hum cancelation would have been nice. However, this pedal serves it's purpose with the limited settings it has.
The Hum debugger overall seems sturdy and well put together. The tough metal shell and durable stomp switch don't look like they will break down anytime soon. One concern of mine is the toggle switch. The switch itself is very tiny. I could see a problem should an accident occur on stage or in the practice pad. The toggle looks like it could snap right off, but it hasn't seemed to be a problem so far.
This pedal can alter the way your guitar sounds if put in the wrong place in your pedal board (as with any pedal). You can get a metallic sounding tone to your signal if utilizied incorrectly.
This pedal is a little pricey, but it is the best investment you can make if you have a guitar with single-coil pick-ups.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

I had looked for a long time for a good noise pedal to help with my noisy Telecaster since I did not want to swap the pickups out for noiseless.I tried the ISP Decimator, which was great for loud high gain stuff, but I usually play clean or with some overdrive. The ISP works like a gate, so once you start playing everything gets through, including hum. It wasn't for me, so I returned it.The Hum Debugger works much better for clean or medium overdrive. It gets rid of about 90% of hum in the "Normal" mode and maybe 95% in the "Strong" mode. Both modes very slightly affected the tone, but not in a bad way...just slightly different. My guitar still sounds like my guitar. No metallic sound or echo as reported by others. I would say it sounds 90% transparent. Since it's not a gate it doesn't let noise through when you play. With high gain it can sound a little sputtery. My advice: get the Decimator for high gain situations and the Hum Debugger for clean or medium gain. Each has their strength.I am glad I got it, and it will stay on my pedal board until someone comes up with something better.

Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger This is a good pedal, but it doesn't go without its small flaws. Pros.1. Great cancel of buzz/hum.2. true bypass3. unexpected ability's to move it around pre or post effects to get cool sounds. Cons.1. Not truly transparent2. Kinda an odd power supply3. Should have a knob or extra throw on the switch to go to "light" hum debugging Like i said great, but a few thing would of made it the BEST, and the issue with coloring is super light and you would have to REALLY listen! I hear it but no one else seems to be able to.

I'm a humbucker guy, but I have collected 3 single-coil guitars. A Stratocaster, a 1965 Gibson Firebird III with original p90s, and a 1956 ES-125 with a single original P90. This pedal works as advertised takes the 60 Hz hum away. I run a 120 watt all-tube head into (2) 4-12 cabinets, and the sound is brilliant. Each guitar has it's own unique individual voice that is unaffected by the Hum DeBugger, and the 60 Hz hum is gone. Not sure about a studio situation, but for home jamming and live performances, this is the ticket!

I tired a couple of these noise supressors for my electric Airline bobKAt which uses a single coil dearmond pickup and think this one works really well and preserves about 95 percent of the tone while suppressing about 95 percent of the noise

Mid boost or 60 cycle hum?

The main thing I noticed, it does color your tone. To me it's more of a mid-boost/notched accent. I run a G&L Tribute S-500 through a Fender HR Deville 410. I cut the mid on the amp to between 2 and 3 to compensate the mid-boost. The tone is now better balanced, and I would rather adjust my amp EQ than deal with that 60 cycle hum!
I don't know what rigs other reviewers are running, but I can handle the 'tone shift' with this pedal.
