ENGL: Amps on another level

By Aurelien Schwartz

from St. Petersburg, FL

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

For years and years, I thought I had the best...an amp recognized by many as the standard in the high gain category and a top selling amp everywhere. That was until I received my Fireball 100 yesterday...This amp destroyed my previous amp in every category and left me speechless. The Fireball 100 is an articulate high gain amp with features most amps do not offer.

I'll close it with this: Through research, I heard many ENGL users talk about how much they love the "ENGL" sound. Needless to say, I now know what they were talking about...
A noise gate that works very well, a power tube monitor and a mid boost switch, all very usable features I never had on any previous amps.
ENGL builds nothing but quality amps, this one is no exception.
Quality, both in terms of sound and manufacturing come at a price. I saw the value myself, hence the reason I bought one.

Floored!!!!!!

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

There I was, happy with my little Peavey XXX combo, and then my bandmates tell me that I needed a bigger amp. After searching and searching I finally decided to give the Engl Fireball 100 a try. Immediately after if arrived in the mail, I plugged it into my Mesa cab, cranked it, and struck a chord.....BOOM! It blew me away!!!! I couldn't believe the tone that I was getting. I have owned this head for 4 months now, and it never ceases to amaze me! Compliment after compliment is heaped upon my tone after every gig we play. The best musical investment that I have ever made.

An Arsenel of sound in a beautful package.

By Of Harrison

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

To put it simply, it might just be one of the most impressive all-tube heads I've ever used. With two channels that have all the versatility in the world, the amp could fit snugly in anyone's rig. The Clean Channel displays wonderful mids and highs, and still carries a heavy bottom end that bellows beautifully. The Lead Channel thrusts out high-end gain with ease, while handling mids and lows perfectly with whatever balance you throw at it. The noise gate is good, but nothing insane. It hands down worth every penny for the craftsmanship and tone it carries. By far one of the most aptly priced ENGL amps. An investment you can't regret.

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I just bought this amp and have to say it delivers everything I need. It is a no frills amp, so that means it delivers 1 thing, but it delivers it great. The gain on the amp suits my style very well (death metal), and damn this thing is loud. Like I said there isnt much else to it except the awesome gain, but the cleans are pretty solid too (although I wouldn't expect anyone to buy this for the clean channel). The Mid boost is VERY good, and was definitely influential in my decision to purchase this amp, as I know the 60w version of this amp didn't have great mids and was not too good at cutting through the mix, the mid boost on this amp solves that. Great buy for anyone who is looking for a simplistic styled amp that can deliver crushing sound.

This amp killz! The clean channel is the best I,ve heard from any amp I,ve owned. But the overdrive channel is that sound I,ve had in my head, but never found till now.I run through a Basson B412 cab, with 2 BC RICH flying V,s loaded with EMG,s and Dimebuckers, and a Gibson flying V with EMG,s and anyone that hears my sound is floored by how crushing the entire package sounds.Make no mistake kiddies, save your allowence and grab an ENGL.P.S-I run no effects at all, just the gitter directly into the head!

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The Fireball 100 is brutal! It has the beefiest low end of any amp I've ever played and that's the main reason I switched from my Marshall JVM410H to this amp. Even with all of the beefiness this amp is still ultra articulate even when the gain is at 10 and especially with the mid-boost engaged. The high end is present but not shrill at all, at least not with my cabs.

The "Clean" channel is absolutely brilliant too! You can dial in a crystal clear clean or, what I love most about the clean channel, you can increase the clean gain for a great blues break up all the way to classic rock!

Some people won't like the shared EQ between the Clean and Lead channels and the fact that it doesn't have built in reverb. Both are problems that easily fade from my mind when I hear how great this amp sounds. There are some great pedals for delay and reverb plus reverb on amps tend to have issues down the road and it's just easier to get new pedals than it is to have your amp's reverb fixed. As for the shared EQ, I think you really have to ask yourself "Did I buy the Fireball 100 because I wanted to focus on my clean tone?" You already know the answer to that.

I think the Noise Gate is a little touchy and not even close to as good as ISP but it is serviceable and that's great if you just want to plug straight into the amp with no pedals.

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I'd prefer that the clean channel would have it's own EQ, but I bought this for gain. Onboard reverb would be great too. The overall tone is dark, but you can tweak it for more highs or to get "Your sound". I run the footswitch so I have 2 higain channels with separate volumes, works like a lead boost. I like the noise gate - less pedals is a thumbs up. The lead tone is fantastic. Liquidy and smooth.

I bought this amp head about a month ago, and each time I turn it on to play through it, I'm amazed every time. This thing is so awesome, and powerful as all get out to. It's a perfect match for rockers to extreme metal heads.

      Excellent Amp!

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

In my search for the coveted "Killswitch Engage" sound I bought a used Framus Cobra, wich turned out to be in terrible condition. After returning it, I turned to the Engl Fireball. The Fireball nails the KSE sound dead on even with 6L6s! This amps lead channel is extremely versatile and very musical sounding. The clean channel is amazing and even sounds lush with EMGs. The amp even came with 2 extra preamp tubes. This amp will never leave my sight.

      GREAT AMP! MUST BUY

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This is a fantasitc amp, for the longest time I have wanted to plan an engl, and today i got a chance. This amp is what i expect and more. Some of the heaviest sounds you can get, crystal clear cleans, and it has a built in noisegate! The only thing i dont like is how the clean and distorted channal run off the same EQ, but thats all i find annoying about it, besides all that, im going to save and get me an ENGL now!!!

Comments about Engl Fireball 100 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Ive now owned this amp for a few months, simply put, this for metal is the best tone i have ever heard from an amp. I had a Marshall DSL 100, was stolen from me, I replaced that with a mesa boogie rectifier, which i was solely dissatisfied with, and regret getting it at all, thd marshall was far more crisp and clean bothin low and high gain channels it was just better. But the mesa, it had to be absolutely cranked to reduce the fizz marginally and even by running an eq pedal in Its fx loop you could not eliminate the flub or fizz, i threw all kinds of pedals at it to try and tame the thing. Never worked, i know a tube amp is to be cranked, but sometimes you want to play your amp an non ear shattering volumes and the mesa sounded absolutely awful at low volume.

So i decided to move on, the fireball was straight out of the box as soon as i turned it on leaps and bounds better. Tonally it sounds fantastic at low volumes in the lead channel, but when it hits volume around 3 or 4 on the master the demon is released. It has to be heard in person to understand, it litterally screams, the tone is so tight and focused and the built in Noise gate is a plus although if your playing in a small room its probably gonna be useless, big venues or clubs i could probably leave my noise gate at home and not worry... But i dont.

Has to channels lead and clean with 2 master volumes allowing you to set a clean volume and lead volume or use the lead or clean with 2 different master volume settings basically allowing you to have a clean channel and rhythm by switching channels and when a guitar solo is time. You can hit the master(set your volume louder on the other master) while on the lead channel and jump to whatever volume you want.
Clean channel is good but shares the eq with lead, fx loop is controlled by footswitch only, adjustable via controls on the back.

This doesnt really need a boost or od pedal in the chain.

This amp can be brutal, smooth, crunchy and even classy. If you don't mind the shared EQ, trust me, buy it. It sounds so good and the feel is amazing. The clean is really good and doesn't get the credit it deserves. One of my favorite metal amps.
