ENGL POWERBALL II is a versatile Rock & Metal amp!!!!

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Currently, I own an ENGL "BLACKMORE 100w", ENGL "FIREBALL 60w", ENGL "520" PREAMP, ENGL "820" (2x35w POWERAMP) and now the ENGL POWERBALL II. They all have that ENGL signature tone yet they remain very different from each other.

I've read all kind of reviews and seen most youtube clips regarding the FIREBALL vs POWERBALL..and how the FIREBALL is much better...... TRUST BE TOLD, right out of the box it would appear that way, but only do to the simplicity of the FIREBALL. It has that ONE go to tone AMAZING as that may be, it limits your usage of the amp....but the POWERBALL II can be tweaked til' you're blue in the face, which I see as an upside...

Sure you may need to spend hours comparing tones like I did with my amp collection to the new POWERBALL II to see just how versality it could be at emulating sounds....but after this little excercise I was completely satisfied with my results....Although, the emulation test was not an exact match, the POWERBALL II was able to get the essence of the other amps tone..and in some cases made me tweak some of the GO TO setting to match what I captured in the POWERBALL II....

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those who expect a ton of variety from there amps.....You want Authenic Metal, Hard Rock, Country & Jazz tone out of your amp....The POWERBALL II would be a great place to start looking.
Other than lack of onboard MIDI capability, this amp is built with most everything you'd expect in a pro-level tube amplifier of this price range. The addition of separate gain controls on this VERSION II of the POWERBALL is main reason I finally made a purchase. Although it requires an additional switcher & footcontoller.....Most every tweakable feature of this amp is switchable..Lastly the FX LOOP can be used in series or parallel manner. THE TONES IN THIS AMP ARE IN ABUNDANCES & THE CLEAN CHANNEL IS ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!!!!
I've been using ENGL products live since 92' and NEVER have I had an issue with their gear....ROCK SOLID!!!! This amp is built like a tank.
I've come to understand you get what you pay for in life but especially in the music gear industry...Not to say others haven't made great product at a lesser price, just that you can't put a price tag an product that give you AMAZING TONE & RELIABILITY for years!!!

ENGL powerball 2

By brad wilhelm

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have owned most world-class amplifiers and this one is working the best for me! it has a very raw metal tone to it but with just a slight amount of fx it sweetens up. I added a lexicon reverb and that's pretty much all I needed to make it work with all the songs that we write. what I like the best about it that I can hear every note that I play it does not get mudded up or lost in a hairy distortion! I keep again around 12 o'clock and it needs no more and for the solos I will throw in a tube screamer in front of it just because I like the fx that it gives.this is not your average buzz box it is truly a tone machine I love that it has a definite growl to it that is unmistakable to any other amplifier! My other guitar player uses a hughes & kettner Tri amp. Now he wants one of these. the cool thing about it is if you don't like it you have 45 days to return it but once you work with it for a couple of days you won't want to get rid of it!! I'll look forward to playing it every day! And I have not felt this good or had the desire to play this much in 20 years!
It's plain and simple this amp will work well for anybody's liking and almost every type of music. but mainly hard rock and metal
Best amp I have ever owned the sound is what I was looking for.
It's worth the money you get what you pay for

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Every time I turn this thing on I am amazed at how thick the distortion sounds. The cleans are also very warm and can be muddied up very easily. The versatility of this amp is phenomenal. Features: There is a built in gate on the back of the amp that is okay at best. If you like the Veil of Maya or Born of Osiris chopped distortion sound this will be fun for you to mess with. You can also run a 1/4" out to turn it on and off. I run a gmajor2 through the effects loop and this thing sings! I highly recommend it. My other guitarist has an orange rockerverb 100 (which I also love) and the Engl beats the piss out of it. Just sayin...Also if you are trying to decide between a couple different models of ENGL amps please go online and listen to the amps themselves. The invader 150 sounds wonderful but it is a much tighter distortion where the powerball II is a fatter distortion. You could save some coin.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have read almost every review on this- many negative. At first this amp makes you tilt your head but once you get it dialed you see the light! All I can think of is people snub this amp because it isn't cheap like their 5150 or 6505 etc.and ENGL are sour grapes. People say their rectos or 5150 are better but let me tell you having owed several of both ( as well as MANY other top amp brands) this thing destroys those amps hands down if for nothing else easy no comprimise level/gain settings, boost and huge variety of sounds AVAILABLE with only a footswitch. The lead channels are easy to play and just beg to bloom into warm sustain with super clarity. The cleans are way better than I thought they would be. This is the best amp overall I have ever played Sounds good low too doesn't need to be loud, but when it is, it gets amazing. You just can't stop playing it because all the channels give you so much on each one. Dual masters sell me also as well as 4 seperate channels for the aloof soundman/stage boost.

Worth every penny. Had a Mesa (love/hate relationship) and was convinced I could get great tones out of it. After months of tweaking and twisting I just couldn't find the sound I was looking for. I stumbled upon a website talking about Engl's so I proceeded to youtube. Every Engl I listened to sounded great (fearedse - google it now). Well, I finally pulled the trigger. My face is still melted. Can't believe the tone this thing can create. Anywhere from sparkling clean to full face metal distortion.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp based on what I heard the only time I have ever seen another guitarist using it live, and I have now confirmed what I remember from that night 2 years ago: this thing cranks! The beauty of the Engl Powerball is in the versatility. With 4 channels, the foot-switchable mid-boost, and the separate A/B master volumes, you can dial in basically 8 sounds at 2 levels. If you want Fender cleans, it's in there. Marshall brown sound? Check. Mesa thump? Check. Dialing it in is the only challenge, as it's not a whatever-your-sound-is-right-out-of-the-box kind of amp. It's a precision German-built machine capable of pretty much anything under the sun... if you have the ear to tune it in. Oh, and I like it, too. Good amp.

I have owned this amp for about 5 months now. I can get an amazing tone out of this thing in about 98% of applications. This head is a monster for recording and it sounds just as good live. It has great cleans, good distortion, huge high gains. I wish it had some sort of delay/reverb built in, but other than that it is phenomenal. If you like huge wall of sound metal, tight djent, or beautiful cleans, this amp is for you.

I have had several Marshall amps (I hope a representative from Marshall reads this) and have been dissappointed by the quality of the product and the attitude of the employees. I have a Peavy 6505+ I really enjoy, but my main amp, the go to amp my recording amp is the Engl Powerball II
German design, production and attention to details, what can I say, unlike Marshall, Engl amps work out of the box and continue to perform.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

After reading so many reviews about this being a 'metal' amp, I couldn't disagree more. I'll probably get blasted for saying this, but I really think my Peavey Triple X is a better 'metal' amp. Not that the PB2 can't do metal, but you would be cheating yourself if you used it for only a metal amp. I will say the Engl Powerball 2 is a versatile tone MONSTER . The clean channel is surprisingly great (it reminds me of the Vibrolux channel on my Fender Super Sonic head) and with the clean gain control it does great 'overdriven' clean tones. It's almost like having two channels in one. The Crunch channel is what I had been looking for a nice classic rock/blues tone - perfect breakup, great definition and plenty of sustain and bite all at the same time. I use it with the gain set on 4 and it's everything I'd ever wanted in a rhythm tone. Lead 3 is my favorite channel of all. It has gain to spare, I also have it set on 4, and it sounds absolutely incredible with every guitar I own - my Les Paul with a Joe Bonamassa p/u set, my Explorer with 500T/496R, Flying V with EMG 81/60 and my other Les Paul with a 498T/Seymour Duncan '59. It has lovely saturation, awesome depth and sustain to die for. Then there is channel 4 - similar to channel three, but its voicing begs for neck pickup soloing. Creamy, defined and just inexplicably wonderful. Add in the bottom/bright switches, the Mid-boost, Presence & Depth Punch and two Master Volumes and you have the total package. This amp is worth every penny and then some. If you want a pro quality sound and the tone you've been hearing only in your head, this is your amp.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

o very versatile.. cleans have a three dimensional presence; crunch is the best I've heard with distinct "tubey" breakup that can be dialed in with infinite levels of grit; lead channels are not as saturated as say a Rivera KTre or a Recto, but less is more when it comes to gain and actual usable and musical tone.

o all channels respond and work well with pedals (quality pedals, that is).. a tube screamer or OCD does exactly what it should push the tubes past sweating; the head needs a dedicated reverb in my opinion; the noise gate is a nice addition though it takes some work to get it dialed in if you've never used one; mid boost, bright and bottom adjustments are fantastic additions allowing for sweet tone tweaks

o style wise do not be fooled, this is not a one trick pony.. it does metal and hard rock very well of course but my fave tone is the "Timmons-esque" neck pickup tone I get with the crunch channel, gain at noonish.(I know, I know.. he plays Mesa. I have a Lonestar head too and can tell you the tones are comparable); with the tonal shaping tools in this amp it is also possible to get legitimate jazz tones as well; it's a very expansive sounding amp even through the two 12" cabinet that I bought with it. obviously the four 12" I played it though at the store can knock a house down, but I'm partial to two 12" cabs, nice stereo quality in the sound with more than enough volume

o major gripe is the footswitch situation.. none of the fifty or sixty versions that Engl offers come with the amp. All are sold separately and are rather pricey. In order to have all of the great switching options that the amp can do you have to shell out another 200 plus bones for the Z9 switch pedal. Oh and no dust covers included like my Mesa head and cab. Minor gripes, I suppose. Otherwise an outstanding, high-performance tone machine. Highly recommended. There's a guy on youtube that highlights some great tones BESIDES the metal ones. Worth checking out.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I was in the market for a high gain amp that could duplicate all the sounds my 80's metal cover bands' songs demanded. I have been playing for 25 years, and I have owned at least 20 different preamps, heads and combos over the years, and I can tell you that this head has been the best overall amp I have ever played. Yeah, I was skeptical about laying out $2500 for the amp and Z-9 footswitch, but after demoing it at a distant music store (the closest ENGL dealer was 110 miles from me), I was sold. The tones you get are just all over the map - you can do AC/DC with the crunch channel, and Metallica with the Lead 1 channel. Lead 2 can do everything in between. Two master volumes (switchable) makes for a nice lead channel boost. Switchable FX loop is one of my favorite options, and the switchable mid-boost can just fatten up any gain setting for super creamy leads that sing! It sounds great at low volumes, too (RARE for an all tube amp!). I wish I were getting paid to say all these nice things, but I'm not... it's just that good. Sustain like you've never heard, harmonics that just jump out and scream, overtones with a gain structure that no other amp at any price will give you. The more you play it, the better it sounds. Highly recommended!!

I play old school thrash and speed metal. I play standard tuning or half step. for people who think this amp is for extra gain and low end and for drop tunning...it can do that but you can also get the most thrashy high end sound. I dont play boomy metal i play megadeth old metallica and slayer. i get that tone. so dont just listen to the videos and sound clips and think its muddy or to bassy. thats how they set it. you can get any..ANY sound you want!!!! Engl all the way!!!!

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I have owned many of the top brand and boutique amps over the years. The Powerball II has ended my search for that elusive sound and feel I've always wanted. My musical style falls mostly within the range of classic hard rock to modern metal. This amp delivers straight ahead AC/DC style drive up to fully saturated, yet articulate gain. This amp, in my opinion is geared towards rock and metal, however it should not be pigeon holed as a "metal" amp, nor a one trick pony. The tones are quite diverse and the clean tone is excpetional. Combining a mild overdrive pedal with the clean channel will cover blues territory. The Powerball II offers many tone shaping options along with it's 4 channels. The only complaint centers on the footswitch. To my knowledge, the Z-9 will not execute multiple functions aimultaneously like channel switching and activating another function like a mid boost, which is a limitation. I think a midi switchable setup would be better to fully utilize all the features of this amp.

Comments about Engl Powerball II 100W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I decided to purchase the Engl Powerball 2 after shopping around a good bit. It came down to a shoot out at my local guitar shop between this head and a Mesa Road King 2. What I found was that the cleans were pretty similar, with the mesa having a little more shimmer, but the crunch and distortion tones on this blew the mesa away!

I fully expected the shared EQ to become a major problem, and may be for tone purists, but its grown on me. It is especially nice on the 3rd/4th channel since i can have the same exact tone for my high gain and lead gain sounds, while only increasing the gain on channel 4 for my leads.

The only thing I wish this amp had was stereo ins and outs for my stereo effects, but otherwise this thing has been a tank on the road and sounds incredible.

with a little tweaking, this amp sounds great. the built in noise reduction handles the hiss and hum beautifully even with heavy distortion. the only thing i wish it had was reverb
a little pricey for the one channel i use but i have this amp for a specific purpose. if i was using it for top 40 stuff where i needed all of those channels then the rpice is good for a 4 channel amp. again, reverb would be nice.

I recently purchased this amp after playing it for numerous hours in the nearby guitar shop. It easily won over the mesa road king 2 that i was also looking at purchasing. Every tone I need is built into this amp, whether its a jazzy/bluesy clean for jazz band at school, rock tones for Sunday morning worship, or metal for my own band. On top of the tones, the harmonics scream every time you hit them and the sustain holds out like no other amp does (which is the big thing that the mesa didn't have).Go out and play it, and you won't regret it!
