Comments about Engl Special Edition E 670 EL34 100W Guitar Amp Head:

After looking in great detail at all the modern "cost is no object" amplifiers on the market, I decided to order the ENGL SE670 EL34 without plauing it first. (There were just no local stores or owners that carried the high end amps I was looking at - Diezel, ENGL, Fortin and similar. Musicians Friend had excellent customer service and shipped it overnight to my front door free of charge. It was well packed and looked quite impressive as I unboxed it and set it up.

I had a sound in my head that I was pretty sure would be close to what I would here out of the EL34 ENGL...I fired it up and played with it for about 2-3 hours in my studio. To be honest, I kept finding myself trying to like the tones I was getting, but really wasn't able to achieve what I thought I would hear. BTW - I was testing it out with a Mayones Regius 7 guitar into a Mesa 4x12 recto cab. By that evening I was seriously considering sending it back, but I told myself I would give it a few more days.

The next day I had a few hours to dial in some tones and was able to dial in an amazing clean tone. The reverb in this unit is the best I have heard. Better even than my Bogner Shiva (which is saying ALLOT. By the end of the second day, I had dialed in about 4 different tones that I was reasonably happy with.

The third day was a live rehearsal with my prog metal band Tyranny of Hours, so I got to test it out at high volumes. OK - This is a very impressive live amplifier. It absolutely smokes at stage volume. It has that great thick Marshall-esque EL34 crunch and way more gain than you can ever dial in.

So, now I have had it for about 3 weeks and I absolutely love it. Compared to my other "metal" type amps (Mesa Triaxis/2:90 and Dual Rectifier Trem-o-verb)the ENGL sound much more like a Marshall descendant. Way more midrange when needed and a completely different top end than the Mesas. The amp is very very tight. The noise gate works well enough. All 4 channel are very usable. Cleans are great. Channel 2 crunch goes from breakup to hot rod Marshall. Channel 3 is a brutal tight gain monster with ridiculous bottom end and crispy high end and channel 4 provides the most fluid midrangey lead tones I have ever worked with. At stage volume, I can literally sustain any note as long as I want and then get it to go into harmonically rich feedback as I turn towards the cab...Perfect!

Features are numerous, so I won't talk about them all here. The effects loops are great, but I wish I could independently punch each of the 3 loops in and out or combine in any order so I could use a rack full of gear without an external switcher. The 2 master volumes with 2 master presence controls are super useful for lead and volume boosts, but I still find myself wishing for completely independent volumes/presence on any channel like the Triaxis. Channel EQ's are also shared on channel 1/2 and 3/4. Ideally each one would have it's own, but there are enough contour, deep and bright type switches that are midi controlled that it's not that big of a deal.

MIDI - It hooked right up and worked like a charm with my All Access midi pedal. Programming and saving channel settings is incredibly easy and way more intuitive than the Triaxis.

So, all of my rambling aside; here's my consensus. The ENGL SE670 is an amazing beautiful modern flexible amplifier. It costs a ton and sounds like it too. It's a complex rig that can take hours of fine tuning to find the brilliant tones that are in this box, so do NOT judge this amp from 15 minutes of guitar center soundroom tweaking. This will be the centerpiece of my guitar rig for many years to come.

Comments about Engl Special Edition E 670 EL34 100W Guitar Amp Head:

I am a pro player and need great tone. This is the best amp I have ever played, bar none (I own two Mesa rigs as well .. Mark V and Road King II). I own two E670 EL34 rigs, one rig for studio and one rig for live. It's very consistent and built solid as a rock ... and the tone is just amazing. I have them both married with the 4X12 pro slant cabs and keep 2X12 pro cabs as backup. Glassy clean, warn clean, the best crunch Marshall never made, and two lead channels that will soar and growl at the same time. It will do anything you want it to do. All MIDI controllable! It is very easy to program. I can't recommend this head enough.

      The BEST Tone Ever

Comments about Engl Special Edition E 670 EL34 100W Guitar Amp Head:

I own a lot of amps and have my choice as to what to play through. This head is, by far, the best sounding, most versatile amp ever. Crystalline cleans, awesome crunch, and two lead channels that will melt your musical soul. Then, top that off with MIDI programmability on thing s like channel changes, output assignments, FX loops, boost, etc. It truly will do anything you ask it to. I already own two and am looking for a third. It IS the definitive Pro Musicians Amp, bar none.
