I got this amp 5 months ago and quickly hooked it up through my Pod xt. I figured it should sound great and it did. However you probably wont believe me when I tell you that it sounds better without The pod. (Master volume all the way up, gain half way, bass half way, full trebile and mid). Perfect. The only thing I don't like is the hum and when you play at higher volumes something in the chassis vibrates very loud. Probably fixable. The effects and reverb could be better, but for the cost I can't complain. Sounds great for blues and classic rock, but if you like metal, you're going to have to get some pedals. I heard of people doing mods on thiers, (speaker, tubes, bias) and I am going to do the same. But to be perfctly honest, mine sounded great right out of the box. You can't beat this amp for the price.

These amps are pretty decent little bargain basement Champ clones. I bought this and didn't change a thing. Once that stock speaker broke in a bit it was really nice sounding. The cleans aren't as sparkly as a Fender, but they're close. The cabinet on this amp is bigger than it needs to be, and that contributes to it's bigger sound. This amp gets a really nice OD going when you crank it. Dime the volume and gain, however, and it gets a little nasty. The bass is overwhelming and the speaker gets farty. I bought a TS808 clone and set the drive to zero, dime the volume, and adjust the tone to my liking, and vavoom! It smooths out that distortion and makes everything just dandy. As a bonus, I don't have to bow down to the local amp tech prick to get the tubes changed - no biasing necessary. Bear in mind that this amp is what it is...a cheap, cheaply made amp that might last quite a few years if you take care of it. The warranty is 5 years, the cab is built well...I'm sure it's MDF, but it's got nice metal corner guards.

Epiphone Valve Special Combo

By koolnumber9

from Newark, CA

I'm really surprised with this amp. I really purchased this as a practice amp and jam amp with my friends. It?s a tube amp with effects and reverb built in. And that?s what I wanted, real tube sound and effects all in one. (So I don't have to carry extra equipment around). It sounds awesome with my modified Boss DS-1 and SD-1. It does have a hum to it (it doesn't know the words). I replaced the tubes (stock sovtek, not bad) with JJ tubes and some of the hum went away. I plan to replace the speaker with a Celestion Tube 10 inch. Sure its not totally quiet and super hi-fi, but it does sound good and you can't beat the price and value for this amp.

Tubes rule Pt. II

By Root666

from Center Barnstead, NH

I recently purchased amp to have a combo version of the Epi Valve series. I own the head version and I must say that this combo is a great companion. I play Les Paul?s and this amp when cranked gives a great gnarly sound. And as the combo version has more features such as tone controls and gain the sounds you get are awesome. It is loud enough to play in a band context and the effects just add to the pallet. I might change out the tubes though as many folks seem to say it just improves the sound but for now I can't wait to take this little monster to the blues jam on Sundays. Buy it now and you will not be disappointed. Tubes definitely rule!

Perfect Bedroom Amp!

By Hannibal

from Lake Mary, FL

This is a great pratice amp, or bedroom amp as I use it. I played this amp over and over at the local music store for about 3 months. Every guitar I auditioned, I used this amp. I have this paired with a Gretchs Historic Streamline and life is good. My main amp is a Fender '59 Bassman which I worship. This Epiphone is a great little brother to my Bassman.

A decent little ripper

By Herrpablo

from Ontario, CA

I replaced the Valve Special's speaker w/an Eminence Ramrod.I replaced power tube w/JJ el84,pre's w/Tung-sol 12ax7s. Stock sound was ok,but a bit muddy. After mods less bassey, more highs and useable mids. This amp has a lo-fi old school sound. Lots of grind when maxed (or near max). Takes pedals well.Boss DS-1 sounds great(really). I play w/P90s,single coils & humbuckers. I run this w/a Trace Elliot Velocette 12R (15-5 watts,12in V30). Trace has the (compared to Epi)'hi-fi' chime,Epi has the ripping mids & British gruntiness. I also have the Valve Jr head. When run thru the Ramrod, the Jr has more useable (ie. not bassey) sounds at low to med volume, but nearly identical at higher volumes (where these 5 watters shine) This is a great little rocker after mods.

Tubes for cheap!!

By dug524

from Tulsa, OK

I ran across this little amp in my search for an inexpensive tube amp. This thing has a really nice clean sound, especially through a single coil PUP. It doesn't have a lot of gain, but I run a Tube Screamer and an EQ pedal and get a great overdriven tone with plenty of sustain. It's hard to beat for the price!!!

Great Tube Tone

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I have had this amp for almost 4 months now and it still rocks as hard as when I first got it. This is great for Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and all kinds classic rock. It's very versatile turn down the eq's and turn up the volume add a Boss DS-2 and you've got James hetfield and Dave Mustaine. The DSP is alright, it's handy just to push the button and it comes right on. The construction is solid and can take a beating. This thing is also loud it's now five watts, more like Fifty! If you are looking for a nice size quality tube amp but this now!

Killer tone for the price!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I just got this recently and I totally love the depth and smoothness of the sound. I play a fender strat and a squier tele through it and it's got an effortless richness. Good reverb, the first and second delay settings are nice. Chorus and flanger are useless in general. Nice weight, heavier than I thought it'd be. Cool looks. I am very pleased and will tell all my friends to get this amp!!!

GREAT with a little help

By Dirty South

from Dirty South

Ask me a question

Needs a little help. I added my favorite distortion pedal, an eq pedal and boom, awesome. Haven't changed out the speaker yet, but that's coming and I bet would make this unbeatable. Alone sounds alright, but solos sound just creamy smooth with the help. Only a couple of the effects are worth keeping and a pedal included would be nice

Incredibly loud

By Joey Van Halen

from Seabrook, TX

I have a Spider II 112 (75watt) amp, and I was wanting to get a tube amp; and I saw this one was very well priced, so I went to Guitar Center to check it out. First off, this thing sounds great, nice clean stuff with the gain low, and very nasty distortion with it high. I had originally wanted the "standard" 15watt version, but I plugged both in, and this 10 watt one is louder than the 15!! It also matched my 75 watt amp all the way up to noon!!!!!!! after that my spider just gets really loud, then my semi-hollow guitar feeds back real bad. This thing sounds good cranked. The effects are not-so-good, just kinda there. I was wondering if an amp this cheap would be any good... it is!
