I'm setting up a new petalboard and bought a 6166 to control my volume. First test was dismal. All I got was a very weak signal thru my board. I tested the signal by testing the output from the first petal in the string. OK there. Next petal in chain was added and tested. OK there also. Next I added the volume petal. No dice. Weak signal. Bypass the volume petal and all other petals were OK. Ernie Ball Volume petal(Highly recommended) was sucking my signal to really low levels.Short of it, I'm an Electrical Engineer so I disassembled the volume petal and did a check. When the volume was at Max volume setting the output resistance was only 33K Ohms. It should have been around 250K. Bingo. Thats the problem. The fix was to loosen the allen screw that fastens the volume Pot to the string drive wheel. Then move the volume petal control to MINIMUM volume position, make sure the pot is fully clockwise (Use long nose pliers) and then re-tighten the allen screw. Presto, the output resistance as measured with an Ohm Meter now goes from 4 Ohms (Low volume) to 233k Ohm (Hi volume)An observation I had with this volume control originally was that the moveable petal in the Low volume position was not touching the little rubber bumper at the front edge of the lower case. I thought that was weird to have a rubber bumper there and the petal was not comming close to it. This was caused by the improper setup at factory. Not only was the setup done wrong, there evidentially is no QA test at the end of the line to see if it works to spec. Come on Ernie Ball, don't let sloppy work with no testing get you bad reviews. We know you build stuff like a tank only we DO expect the tank to start right out of the box. A lot of people would not have the electrical skills to get this thing to work. All works fine now. I'm glad I'm the one that got this one as repair was not to painful.

I bought this pedal, and at first, it was a great buy. The swell it produced as you turned sounded exactly the way I want. The only problem I ran into with both the different pedals I bought are that the internal strings they use inside tend to get out their original setting, in turn messing up the whole pedal. Twice this has happened, with 2 different pedals.

Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
Okay, so I'm kind of biased on this thing. The first time I touched one was about 1994. I wanted a volume/expression pedal for my DoD floor multi. It was just soooo creamy smooth, but I didn't have the money for it then at $150. My damn multi only cost about $220. My amp was like $325. I couldn't spend this much on a pedal.Anyway, what's so phat/stoopid about this thing is the way it's built. It's a tank, but every moving part glides like lady parts. The string that pulls the potentiometer looks flimsy, but it's extremely precise. People used to actually take apart their Cry Baby Wahs and put them into an EB Volume pedal to make them smooth.Anyway, I bought one of these used. It was beat up, but it's a tank. Just came with some scuffs and digs in the black footpad. I did a treble bleed mod on mine, which I recommend. It's about the easiest mod I've ever heard of, except maybe an 18V mod for EMG pups. The 1 nF treble bleed makes it so you adjust volume without loosing high end and altering tone. I prefer to do the tone altering with my guitar knobs. So it's been just super owning one of these. The only compaint I have is the switch on it for your tuner. It really could have been a lot more obvious, couln't it? I still can't find this damn thing when I'm trying to tune up. Just put a big red button on there or SOMETHING. It's like orthoroscopic surgery trying to get in there and switch my tuner on. Minus 0.5 for YOU!
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
So ive had this pedal for about 6 months now and one day i was playing and the string somehow slipped off of the spool, and let me tell you, it is a killer to replace. You need about 3 tools and alot of patience to fix it. If this pedal was ever lost or stolen, i would replace it with the Dunlop Volume Pedal, it has a much better mechanism and it is more durable.
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
This is the best volume pedal I've ever used - it's very durable, sturdy, and most importantly, it does its job well. I also have the Boss FV-500H, but I only use it in my practice rig and for expression. The EB takes up a lot of room on my board, but to me, a few square inches of real estate is not worth trading out something that's faithfully served me for more than 6 years with no issues whatsoever.

Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
This pedal is the only volume pedal you will ever need. It actually eliminates noise at the end of your chain. If you manage to break that string, it is YOUR fault, and not the pedals. You are not supposed to put your full weight on it and being extremely harsh with it. It is a volume pedal with a STRING inside, not a wah pedal. The volume range is nice, but there could be more, if you're not careful it is basically an on and of switch. Overall I recommend this pedal. Buy it!

This thing is amazingthey should stop making all other volume pedals cause this is just better thanall the restbuilt solid, looks killer, works awesomemy foot is always on itI play very modern worship so I'm always tweaking my volume to follow the dynamicsAlso I use it alot with delay and some other stuff to do volume swellsand create really spacey sounds to fillin soft parts of our songsI could just play with it all day long and never get boredIt's a little pricey but it sure won't breaksolid tank this isTuner out it pretty sweet toBuy!!!! there's no reason to not
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
I've owned one of thse for about 5 years now and just recently the little kevlar string snapped inside and had to order the replacement string kit. During these 5 years though, it's been and awesome pedal. Built like a tank. I also own the Jr. version which is cheaper (hence my lower value rating) and works exactly the same way. I recommend this over the full size version if you're strapped for cash or pedal board room. Overall, this pedal has the best swell/sweep of any VP on the market that I've tried.
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
I bought this (The mono Model 6166) five years ago, and have been using it in my electric guitar system, on the very front end of the signal chain, very heavily, since. It is extremely solid, (I love the all-metal construction of the housing and the mere size of the foot surface itself ? really solid feel), as well as the length of pedal travel. The only complaint that can think of is that the string broke on it, which I found disappointing, considering the price of the pedal initially; but when I e-mailed Ernie Ball?s customer support to tell them about the problem (Along with a picture), they e-mailed me back, the very next business day, and immediately mailed me a replacement string assembly ? and at no charge to me! Now, THAT?s solid customer support. This pedal is whisper quiet and clean sounding. I?ve used other major manufacturer?s pedals, but I really prefer the feel and the tone of this one, hands down.
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
This thing is built like a tank and is as smooth as silk. The pot is totally linear across its whole range and doesn't bounce when you take your foot off it. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it IMO. I also like the bigger size because it stays put on the floor and you can get your whole foot on it.
Comments about Ernie Ball 6166 Mono Volume Pedal:
This is a great pedal. With a proven design it's very durable and tough. Great if you're in a band trading lead and rhythm parts. Also makes interesting violin type effects. One of the few pedals I've tried that you can go through and not lose any of your good tonal qualities. No batteries or other power source required;cool.a little pricey but worth it this thing is built to last.
