Bought it based upon youtube vids. As always was worried I would get it in the mail and it wouldn't live up to the hype. Was prepared to send it back if I wasn't totally happy. Keeping it!!!

Clean channel is very full and warm and rich. Make sure you turn up the resonance knob on the back. Turned all the way down the sound is a bit lifeless.

I've played it through a Marshall 1960 cab with greenbacks, a Peavey XXX cab, a Mesa 4x12 and a Mesa 2x12 closed back. I did not like the sound of it at all through the Mesa cab. It was much better through the Mesa 2x12, but sounds best through my Marshall 4x12.

The crunch channel is very AC/DC, lots of rich overtones. The high gain channel is superb.

The amp seems to respond quite diferently depending upon pickups you feed it with and surprisingly lower gain pick ups, like P90's, single coils, or Tele's really seems to sound great. Not saying a high gain pickup doesnt sound good, but some amps seems to respond to high gain metal pickups...Played a cheap Fender Jaq through it today with modern p90's in it and really liked it.

    It's pretty loud at 4 oclock with a 4x cab. Not a bedroom/apt amp.

The eq really shapes the sound and tone and combinations of gain and volume give you different sounds. Not like some amps that you can only dial in to one tone and everything else sounds bad.

Amp really cleans up with volume roll off and responds well to tone knob adjustment on the guitar.

This is not an amp where you dial and dial to get a decent tone. You dial around to get different tones of many flavors.

Surprised by how much I like the clean channel. Gain at 2 and volume all the way up gives a nice sparkle with some bite. Gain all the way up and volume at 2 is nicely overdriven on the edge of breakup. Clean channel sounds great with pedals.

Short of a Bogner or Boutigue amp of some sort, I can't think of a better buy for the money.

This amp sounds amazing, I was considering getting rid of my Mesa Boogie Mk V to down size and get this beast. Prior to this I had the Hughes and Kettner Tube Meister 36 (amazing amp) but it didn't have the gain I wanted. I tried this amp out and though it sounds amazing channel one and two share EQ and volume control. That means there is a unbearable jump in volume from 1-2. This amp would be perfect for studio work but real world it's going to be a pain.

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Easily the best metal amp in the world right now. There is no need to even build a custom amp anymore. The EVH 5150 III has every feature you could ask for. Midi switching and preamp out and resonance and presence pots and even a fricken power cable mount? Setting a new standard for features on amps. Front and back vents for staying cool in road cases. Ships with heavy duty footswitch and speaker cable.

You are seriously wasting your money buying any other <100w head.

Matches perftectly with a vertical Mesa 2x12. Looks so beautiful together.

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I was killing my back lugging a Bogner Shiva 2x12 combo around to gigs in a classic rock band. I was convinced it was the only amp to get me the tone i needed. Wrong! My fellow guitar player bandmate convinced me to try this head. Didnt care for the G12H30 speakers in the EvH cab, but when we tried through an Orange 4x12 bottom w/ V30s, there it was...the Eddie sounds- ALL of them! Paired with the right bottom, this head delivers. 50 watts is plenty loud. Sold the combo and picked up a Dr. Z 1x12 cab and it smokes the big rigs. Plan on getting another cab for outdoor venues for summer. This is powerful, portable and channels 2/3 bring the heat. Also dumped my stomp boxes since there's no need. Go try one if your tone searching!

I normally stay away from player endodersed products by this amp HITS HARD and with GREAT clarity and versatility. To get a better amp you would have to go to Mesa or something else like that and that would include a lot more money. PS the VH3 cabs are great also I have 2 1x12's. SWEET.

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I'm a gigging musician that plays a spread of hard rock to pop, so I need tones that can go from thumping to classic, and it needs to be able to sit in the mix correctly. It doesn't matter how great an amp sounds in the bedroom, it's all about how it's going to fit in with the whole band. I play several of the high-gain amps (including Mesa, Marshall, Blackstar, Engl) and they seem to have a sweet spot as far as their induvidual tone, but that sweet spot doesn't always sit in the mix. The EVH doesn't have a particual sweet spot, it is sweet over any setting I've tried on it! It gives me supurb sounds over so many ranges, so I get tones that I love that also sit very well in the mix. This is the best best sounding, most flexible modern amp I've ever played. Again, I play a lot of high-end amps, and the EVH stands it's ground against all of them.

There are a couple compromises... I personally don't like the power and standby switches on the back. I don't like the resonance knob on the back either. Channel 1 and 2 share an eq and volume, but they did a great job of making it very usable, in my opinion. I've read that the volume jump is intolerable, but I disagree. I think it's spot on. In the mix, a clean/dry tone will cut through more than an overdriven tone, so I like the bit of a boost the higher gain channel has; it needs to be that way, in my opinion. The location of a few of the controls is there to save space; this is a smaller form factor.

This amp is LOUD, but sounds good at low volumes. I personally don't use it as a practice amp, but see/hear no issue with it being played at bedroom levels.

Bottom line, either go out and try this amp, or get one and try it out. You will love how versitle it is. Best value and tone on the market!

the only thing not mentioned yet is that for the same money you may want to check out a mesa-boogie dual rectifier amp - they are more complicated but at the same price point on both of their versions - something to think about. can anyone suggest a good inexpensive reverb pedal?

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp sounds good. The EVH tone is superb and overall the 5150 III rocks. I agree, switching channels between clean and crunch is a pain and really doesn't make this amp easy to use playing out. I wanted the 50 watt version because the 100 watt is ridiculous for where I play but I wish it had 3 channels. I also wish my 50 watt head had the built in reverb like the new combo does. Bottom line.......this amp is still awesome and just deal with the nuances.

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp is amazing! Retired my peavey 6505+ into the bedroom for it. I use it with two 4x12 ORANGE cabinets. I do use a MXR 10 band EQ to give me that extra scoop but the heart and soul come from the eVh. i love the foot-switch! its the one that comes with the 100watt version and it comes along with a speaker cable as well. A quick side note: everyone complaining about the two channel volume problem is ridicules in my opinion. In my playing style i use clean and heavy (in what songs do you need all three?). I have no use for a crunch channel (metal player) and come on people roll back the volume on your guitar! The 100 watt version comes with all separate channel controls. i love it! def great for metal guys!

Comments about EVH 5150III 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I sent the amp back for the following reasons. There is a huge volume jump between the clean channel and the blue channel. The clean channel was ok but it was thin and lacked the round and clear clean tone of a mesa or fender twin. The blue channel was a little thin and lacked bass response. And the red channel had an annoying upper mid spike, was very noisy and a one trick pony. Overall this amp is voiced with a lot of treble, the tone is aggressive. I was unable to get a singing or expressive 3D lead tone. I do not see this amp covering a lot of different styles.

I will not repeat everything that was already written in the previous reviews. DITTO! This is an amazing amp with the best tones you can imagine. I love everything about it except the slight volume difference between the clean channel and the brown channel. Here is what hasn't been mentioned; you can switch channels on the amp with the provided footswitch or program the channel switching with an external MIDI device. It makes it great if you are using a MIDI effects processor. I use a Line 6 Floorboard and it works great switching channels as I switch effects. I have fixed the volume issue between channel one and two by adding a little boost to the clean channel through the effects loop. Being able to switch your effects and channel at the same time is huge for playing live!

            GREAT AMP!!!
