OVERVIEW

A tube-powered studio monster that's overflowing with classic Fender tone.

Supercharged with a plethora of flexible features, the Bassbreaker 15 is a top-notch performer for stage or studio. This chameleon-like amp creates its magic with a trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes feeding into two EL84 power tubes for 15 watts of tight, modern tone. The three-position Gain Structure switch gives the amp three distinct boutique voices, ranging from mild to wild. They're all tasty and touch-sensitive without masking the character of the guitar.

Recording-friendly features such as XLR line output with switchable speaker emulation and Power Amp Mute make it easy to lose yourself in the moment without getting bogged down by the details. And a level-adjustable digital hall reverb adds just the right amount of ambience.

The handsome new Bassbreaker cosmetic treatment includes dark gray lacquered tweed, oversized pointer knobs, Fender block logo, and more. With great looks, tone, and features, the Bassbreaker 15 is destined to become a goto amp for rehearsals, gigging and recording.

Features include
•15 watts from two EL84 tubes for aggressive midrange character
•Gain Structure switch for three distinct tonal flavors and overdrive levels
•Recording-friendly Power Amp Mute, switchable speaker-emulated XLR line output and ground lift
•Single 12” 8-ohm Celestion V-Type speaker (combo model only)
•Combo and head mate perfectly with BB-112 extension speaker cabinet

Bassbreaker Series

The late-'50s tweed-covered Fender Bassman is often called the grandfather of all guitar amps. What started earlier that decade as the companion amp for the Precision Bass actually became one of the most beloved guitar amps of all time, thanks to its simplicity and versatility, its wide dynamic range and warm tube overdrive, its full-frequency stage-filling power and its rugged roadworthiness.

Fender tweed amps evolved into the brown, blonde, blackface and silverface models of the 1960s. Along with the dramatic evolution of their look, the amps were redesigned each time to sound brighter and cleaner.

New Bassbreaker Series guitar amplifiers continue that fascinating lineage with yet another sound and style, a kind of "parallel evolution" in which time-honored Fender amp DNA results in a satisfyingly dirtier tone that evokes the dawn of hard rock.

The new series takes the 45-watt 1959 Bassman design and breaks it with features including the early Fender block-letter logo, black tweed covering, and refined pointer knobs plus power tubes hinting at the U.K. amps that "borrowed" Fender circuits in the 1960s. The sound is one of pure and unadulterated tube greatness.

Comments about Fender Bassbreaker 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

First, this amp has great clean and dirty sounds; in other words, it's flexible and covers a wide range. The cleanest setting is not as sparkly as my Twin Reverb, but it is a respectable clean sound. The #2 position gives great blues crunch and the #3 position has a great, thick overdrive tone. The tone controls are adjustable enough to go from scooped to mid-range heavy. I'm usually using the #2 position with an overdrive pedal like the Thorpy Peacemaker. The sound without the Thorpy is not as well-defined as my Dr. Z Mini Z (less mid-range "crang" on the Bassbreaker), but the Bassbreaker also much cheaper than the Z and more flexible. The Mini is great, but I can get a lot more excellent sounds out of the Bassbreaker (+ pedal) than with the Z.

The digital reverb is OK. I use a plug-in when recording and turn off the Bassbreaker reverb.

The amp is plenty loud enough to play with a band if your drummer isn't a complete Cro-Magnon (no offense to Cro-Magnons).

This might be cumbersome to use on stage because channels cannot be footswitch activated.

I took points away because the effects loop is very noisy and the XLR out for recording does not sound that good. These are minor points for me, but I would have liked to have a good effects loop. The amp takes pedals no problem.

Comments about Fender Bassbreaker 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Got one of the originals with Fx loop ground issue. Massive hum with pedals plugged in to say the least. I returned and got a corrected model, which helped a little, but still had horrible hum with some pedals. I took this as indicative of an amp that obviously had issues taking pedals from the beginning. I returned and will be looking for another amp, although I will likely have no choice but to look in a much higher price range for a good pedal platform amp.
Definitely worth noting though, Musicians Friend customer service and support helped me every step of the way. Helped my get a much better discount than even my local guy, got the second "correct" amp sent to me in a few days from my original return, and all of it was prepaid shipping and insured by them. All the guys I spoke to were awesome on the phone and couldn't be happier with the service.

Comments about Fender Bassbreaker 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Overall, I like this head. The sound is great and it is pretty easy to use. It is portable, and it looks nice. It has good features. I mostly pleased with it, but do have the following honest / negative comments to make:

-Right out of the box, it has the effects loop hum. After researching online, I learned this is a common problem. I called Fender and they told me to take it to an authorized repair center and it would be repaired for free. I plan to do that soon, and I'm glad it will be repaired, but it would be even better if the problem was not there to start with.

-I have tried the direct out a couple times, and it seems overly quiet. I tried it at my church and at a show, and it was very quiet both places. I hope to have this looked at when I take the head in for the effects loop repair, but maybe that's just how it is. I may end up having to mic the cab instead.

-When I bought this head, I was under the impression I could use the direct out without having a load (a speaker) hooked up. A bandmate mentioned that I probably should have a speaker plugged in, even if it's muted. I double checked with Fender (twice), and they said that a speaker does have to be plugged in at all times, even it the head it muted and the direct out is being used.

          -There is no footswitch.

          Service and delivery comments:

Prompt shipping, good customer service (got a 15% discount by calling in).

Comments about Fender Bassbreaker 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been playing for 15 years and I had lots of amps, nowadays I have an Orange Rockerverb , a Hiwatt Hi Gain and now this Fender Bassbreaker, wich I fell in love imediatly. It's an amazing amp , there's not a bad sound that you can take out of it. The clean channel is really good , with a digital reverb that is regular yet very usefull. The Mid gain structure is a fatanstic tube overdrive Led Zeepelin and ACDC style. The high is too over the top for me but also very good sounding.
