Comments about Fender Machete 50 50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:
I waited on this for several weeks until it restocked and bought it. I was looking for something high gain and versatile that could approach a dual rectifier tone but not be super loud. This amp can't quite cut it. It does a good approximation of something like a JMC 800 but it can't do the cutting, modern tones of a Mesa unless you put a pedal in front of it. I sent it back the day after I got it because I knew I would be frustrated if I kept it.
The other problem is the lack of a clean tone - from a Fender amp! The gain and volume controls are linked, so to get a pure clean tone on channel one you have to turn the gain knob down all the way - to almost zero. Then, to be heard you have to turn the volume up to maximum and it is so quiet you probably couldn't be heard over a drummer - let alone a full band. To get any volume on channel one you have to increase the gain and it starts to breakup when you get to around 10 o'clock. The volume mismatch between the 2 channels is also huge.
It is a flexible amp with the MIDI switching capablility, the variable effects loop and the silent recording. The digital reverb sounded a little too over the top for me - cavernous even at low settings. The notch control and the dampening control do make a big difference in shaping tone, but I just wasn't able to get the tone and saturation I wanted without having to crank the amp up all the way - the Achilles heal of all tube amps. I'm going to stick with my POD HD and use a solid state rack amp to drive my 2x12 cabinet. There is so much more flexibility with that sort of setup even though the sound is obviously digital sometimes. That way I get the cutting, saturated tone I want at low levels or at high volume.
I never used the direct out for recording. The included footswitch was nice and does give lots of flexibility. The amp looks great - very 60's musclecar and the size of the thing also suprised me - it's pretty big. I really wanted to like this amp but I just couldn't. I might have been expecting too much but all the videos I saw on Youtube (which were of the combo amp) from Fender and others convinced me Fender finally had a great high gain amp to compete with Marshall and Mesa. It's good and probably does compete with Marshall, and it is definately high gain, but it's just not right for me.
The bottom line is if you play 70's rock or 80's metal you will probably really like this amp. If you want to get any harder than that and play modern metal you will be disappointed with it.
