The Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 model is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive tube combo amps in Fender history. Its brown textured vinyl covering, smartly stylish “E” grille design and bold crossed-swords front-panel badge convey a decidedly stately vibe with a marked air of cold war cool. To say nothing of its admirable tone and power. The 13-watt Excelsior elegantly encloses a single 15” speaker, with a bottom-loaded primary chassis and top-loaded control chassis for operating convenience and low noise (powered by two 6V6 output tubes and two 12AX7 preamp tubes). Distinctive features include Instrument, Microphone and Accordion inputs that each have individually optimized circuitry; tremolo circuit with speed control, bright/dark tone switch (for treble or bass emphasis), volume control and 1/4” internal speaker disconnect that lets the amp drive an external speaker enclosure. The Excelsior is perfect for playing at home, smaller gigs and studio sessions. Bring a fresh and unconventional new vibe to your playing.

Close your eyes, forget its low buck and made in China and you'll swear it's a big budget boutique amp.
This amp has a cool vibe and is unique. 13 watts through a 15" speaker give a glorious tone.
Yes it's made in China. Forget that fact. This is a great amp and easy to love.
It's kinda quirky with no reverb, bright/dark tone switch and no intensity control on the tremolo. That being said, play this amp for 10 minutes and you'll forget all that. It sounds like an amp sounding 2-3 times as much.
Beautiful clean tones at reasonable volumes. Twist the volume knob on your guitar and it sings with a gritty, soulful voice.
I couldn't be happier with this amp.

Good entry level all tube amp. Easy to distort if you don't want to use pedals. That's why I titled it,"this could or could not be the 1" you're looking for. If you want a cheap brand new all tube amp to rock out with...this is it. It already has a few mods out there and there are more on the way.
Cons: It is a one trick pony. If you want anything besides a quickly distorted rock tube amp...look elsewhere. No bass, mid, or treble controls. No reverb. The Bright/Dark is too bright or too muffled. You can buy a mod switch or just put the switch that comes on it in the middle where it links both Dark & light (you'll find where it is). My biggest complaint is that an amp advertised as quite by separating the pre & power tubes...sure is Noisy! I tested multiple ones at different guitar centers after I bought mine to see if it was just me. I tried different pre-amp tubes...better sound but still noisy. Also, the 15" speakers in general are IMHO a bad idea. Too big to move air very well for a small & low power amp. So, guys are talking about changing speakers to 12", changing out ALL 4 tubes, rewiring some of the board, putting different knob mods etc...
By the time I figured doing all that, I could buy a real Fender amp...which I ended up doing!
So...If you want a blues, Jazz, country, or any clean type amp, that can take pedals...be ready to mod this thing out, or look elsewhere. If you are looking for a low-powered rock tube amp and have a reverb (but not many other) pedals for little $$$, YOU'VE found it!

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I had the billmaudio tone know installed. It didn't seem to have any more bearing on the tone than the stock Bright/Dark switch. I had the Pro model with the Eminence speaker. I changed out the power tubes and the preamp tubes. The amp lacks depth. It has a sterile, bland prescence. It is hard to find an amp stand that will work with it due to the lack of a back panel. To top it off, it is incredibly heavy. As of September 2014, I can't find too many dealers still offering this amp. Even a used Excelsior, at a third of the new price, ain't worth it.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I got the surf green model with the Eminence Legend. The first one had mdf damage that pierced the tolex so back it went. The replacement was packed much better but has an obvious indentation on the top right side. I don't know if this more shipping damage or shoddy workmanship but I decided against going for another try and having my funds floating around in limbo. This experience has left me soured but having said all that, these are really cool amps; I can't add much to what has already been said in other reviews but I'd suggest buying any color other than brown since those have the stock speaker everyone replaces. It'd be ideal if you could check the amp for damage in person, too, but that isn't going to happen online!

I felt lucky to find this at the time at the discounted price, which has since gone higher.
I haven't seen mention of the construction of the amp in any of the reviews. The way the amp is built is one of its best features. You have to exercise some cautions as with any tube amp, but this one is solid.
I needed some Tele twang, so I went out an bought a Tele style guitar. Worked out fine.

This amp needs a few upgrades but once done it is like playing a 60's fender .he 13 watts is just right for home use/studio and through a board can be used anywhere. I have even thought of buying a second one to use with my rickenbackers that both have a sonomatic plug.

This is a great little amp! Experience has taught me that lower wattage is your friend. There is no sound like driving the "big tubes". This amp allows you to get that sound without overpowering volume on stage. The simple controls are very effective. The amount of tone control that can be acheived with the volume/ tone controls on your guitar with this amp is amazing. You can get a big sound out of this little amp.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Bought the brown one with the OEM speaker from an MF sister company on Super Special for ridiculous price.

Pretty good right out of the box, but planning a few upgrades: JJ 6V6 tubes, NOS 12AX7s, tone control mod, maybe a new 15" speaker (got an Altec recone that I want to try). HUGE kudos to Fender for making an instant cult classic for tinkerers and cheap amp fans.

Of all the good stuff here (read the reviews; they've pretty accurate), the most surprising thing is how good humbuckers sound on the "bright" setting. The mud is gone! My Epiphone 339 sounds like a nice archtop with single coils, except NO hum. Now I regret selling my Godin Kingpins, which I could never get to sound good thru my other amps (including a Gibson single ended EL84 clone).

Buy one. If they go on sale, buy two.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior 13W 1x15 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I really wanted to retire my 50 year old Silvertone. While this does not completely surpass that amp, it is a good place to start. I may upgrade the speaker and tubes later, but for now I'll make sure it is really necessary.

I do feel like the speaker break in on this amp is taking longer than expected. I won't be completely sure about the sound quality of the amp stock until I am sure it has been sufficiently broken in.

I don't need lots of output power for what I do, but this amp seems plenty loud for many applications. I have never been a big fan of the EL84 powered tube amps, so this is a better option for me.

Limited with equipped speaker. Tremolo? Who cares. I would trade it for a tone control. Even with dark switch it's very bright with equipped speaker. So I plugged it into a Celestion Vintage 30 closed back cab and improved tremendously! Very good sound cranked. 6V6's are one of my fav power tubes. This is a good test model for Fender. So do it right, build a hand wired combo with Vintage 30 & I wouldn't hesitate to use on gigs!!!

I perform and run a venue that hosts a weekly open mic. I brought this for a house amp. When I played, I received more comments on my tone than usual. And I had been playing through a modified Hot Rod Deluxe prior to this! All night I listened to others play everything from jazz to jimi and it sounded fantastic!

Definitely loud enough to keep up with drums as long as you want some distortion. For our small venue, it was totally enough.
