I have used a Tech 21 Trademark 10 for many years as an analog recording amp with good results as it had an XLR jack in its back panel so easy to record. Still, I wanted the body and detail a real tube amp has for guitar and this Super Champ X2 really delivers on that. To use this amp as a "recording preamp" I found out (from Fender) that you need to have an 8 ohm load on the speaker out jack or risk blowing it up as is true for most tube amps. So I made one. I got an 8 ohm resistor from Parts Express, wired that to a 1/4" jack and done for very little cost.

Still, I find that while the range of recorded tones coming out of the Line Out jack is just great, the recorded tone does not have the bark and presence that running it through a great speaker does. If you can record the output of a great speaker, please do so. I do like having the 16 different amp emulation choices and really like some of the effects that I dont have like "Vibratone" and "Tremolo".

In all, a very musical and creative recording tool in my studio.

I had to return this amp. 'cause of the lack of an FX. Loop. I'm a jazz/fusion player so I liked the clean ch. and the distortion channel -BUT- not being able to use the FX. loop to connect to my volume pedal it become immediately a big issue. Having a volume pedal it's a major part of my sound, I've being using it for years, putting the pedal up front in the chain isn't the same thing, it becomes an expression pedal, for that I rather use the volume knob on my guitar. I should have thought this more in details. Also the voicing knob isn't gig friendly, imagine the situation, it's dark, you're playing....you're not gonna be there counting "How many notches clockwise is my fab. distortion ?" Sure you can take a note but, if you have been there you know that isn't the most practical thing to do. Too bad though, the amp sounds great, It wouldn't have cost much to Fender to add an F.X. loop. This amp is good for studio work or if you're used to an expression pedal instead of Master volume.

Super Champ X2 Head/combo - Great amp with outstanding versatility!

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I also have the previous model Super Champ XD. The downfall of that amp is the 10 inch speaker. After adding JJ tubes and rebiasing it and running the amp thru a 12 inch speaker the amp comes to life and is much louder, as loud or louder than a Blues Jr. with more bells and whislte for less money. This new version X2 head is fabulous. The amp models are really good. Those 16 amp models are not eaactly the same as on the XD. For example there is no acoustic amp sound. However, you can download the Fender Fuse software for free then plug the amp into your computer and select other amp models and modify the various parameters of the amp models and the effects too and then store them. I'm running my X2 head thru an Eminence 12 inch speaker, the same one that came stock in my Blues Jr. and my Hot Rod Deluxe and it really sounds good. Can't wait to get in there and check the bias to see if I can open it up some more. I've been playing guitar for over 45 years and have had many of the great amps. If you've been wanting a 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb Re-issue but can't afford it then this can be just the ticket for you. It's got a superb Deluxe Reverb sound, a couple of Princeton Sounds, Champ, Twin, Bassman, British, Jazz and heavy metal models I recommend to anyone who is gonna just have one amp to get this one as it can do so many things. If you are into recording there is a line out making it easy and you can also use this to run into a PA system if you need more volume without having to mic the amp. With the X2 combo the speaker stays on so you don't need to drag around a big stack. Fender should have included the optinoal footswitch in my opinion. My son also has the earlier model XD and he built a slightly taller cabinet and installed a 12 inch speaker, something Fender should do, and his amp rocks. I would like to mention that Fender's customer service is really good. I bought a Deluxe Player's Strat with gold hardware last year and one of the "original" style tuners would not hold the string in place, some sort of defect. With just a phone call I had the part at my door, free of charge, in about 4 days. With this new amp head I had a question and called their support in Arizona and got my answer immediatley. This new X2 series is made in Mexico whereas the previous model was made in China. So in conclusion, I highly recommend this to those looking for their first tube amp as well as us oldtimers. You won't be disappointed.

Jim (Daddio)
Lots of great amp models and effects and simple to use. Perfect choice for someone who will have just one amp or a veteran who may not want to lug around a heavy amp. I own several tube and solid state amps including the Super Champ XD, Fender Frontman, Bass Frontman, Blues Jr., Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall MA 100H, Line 6, and many more.
Initial quality is very good. Most Fender products hold up really well if you take care of them.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

After playing solid state amps and rack-effects for two decades, I got a little Fender Vibro Champ XD from a pawnshop and loved the tube tones so much I decided to get a grown-up tube amp. There aren't too many good available tube amps sitting around in my corner of Montana, but I tried all I could in my price range including a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Mustang III (tho not a tube amp), and Marshall 5 Series. None really suited my needs as a weekend warrior and occasional small gig player. The Deluxe and 5 Series have to be cranked to ear-splitting volumes to get good tones out of them and I would have needed various stomp boxes, and the Mustang didn't have those authentic tube tones I was looking for. After extensive online research I rolled the dice and ordered the Super Champ X2 HD and matching SC112 cab untried through MF. This is the first factory-new amp I have ever bought.

Right out of the box I had concerns, as the sound was a bit harsh on both channels and the models all sounded a bit, well, wrong. But after installing FUSE, tweaking the settings, and breaking in the tubes and speaker, all those concerns melted away. I am now getting fantastic Marshall and Fender tones out of this thing, as well as pretty good metal tones. As for the cleaner blues/jazz models, they are killer – that classic warm tube clean with basically no harshness or breakup until the main volume is up past 7. The FUSE software really lets you tweak everything just the way you like it. I have fiddled endlessly with the parameters and my sounds just keep getting better and better. I love how FUSE shows a mockup of the amp fronts for each Voice, so for e.g. when you are on Voice 12, your FUSE screen on the computer looks just like an 80's Marshall. The head and cab version yields a super-punchy low end. This amp is ideal for a lot of styles including blues, jazz, country, alt, and classic rock. Extreme metal players who play nothing else might be better served with something else.

Despite its wide range of grade-A tones, this amp is not ideal for the touring player – key controls like Mid and Presence are only adjustable via FUSE, so for at-gig tweaks you would need a laptop to fully adjust for the room. Obviously, technophobes should also look elsewhere, as this amp only really comes alive through use of the FUSE software app. But for players like me who want 100% authentic tube tones, wide variety of sounds, great sound at all volumes ranging from the bedroom to the small club, punchy low-end, and affordable price, this is as close to perfect as I can imagine. Oh yeah, and it's light-weight and easy to carry around. LOVE this amp and cab!

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

A sweet blend of classic fender tube tone and modern modeling tech in a small but powerful little package. I also own the previous version in the combo. Great little amp as well but, the little baby speaker doesn't let the amp breathe. Had been running that with a 2x12 cab with 25 watt celestion greenbacks and it opened right up and sounded like a boutique amp. That and a Boss Blues Driver became my go to rig. Wished it came in a head and didn't want to hack up the poor little guy to cut it down. Then one day I found this little gem.

Soundwise it is very similar with minor differences in a couple of the stock effect sounds but still great. Might even like it better haven't had it long enough to be sure yet. One may think, "oh 15, watts, what am I going to do with that". This is more than just a bedroom beauty, I have used it in rehersals and a number of shows and it holds it's own just fine. The 12" ext cab offered probably helps too, compared to the little speaker in the combo but, I know with my greenbacks the sound is sweet.

The amp is very versatile with a wide range of amp sounds and effects. It has a sweet clean channel as well as the many choices of the drive channel. Sure it doesn't have a 1,000 different amp sounds and a 1,000,000 different effects but if you can't find it here you likely do not know what you want yet.

Versatility, affordablity, portability, and great tube sound. This amp can't be beat. Now for big venues with large stages where you need more coverage I do slave a 100 watt Marshall 1/2 stack but the SuperChamp x2 is definitely awesome. We tried this head with my cab side by side with a number of high dollar low watt heads and this one put most to shame and held it's own with heads that cost many times more. A lot of other guys were kicking themselves for the money they dropped on amps that this amp smoked for this low of a price. Anybody wanna buy a hot rod deluxe?

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

A great Fender amp. I bought one of these at GC last week and ive been so busy with it i havent even touched my supersonic. I havent used the computer features, or many of the amp models, in fact i have only really used the basic - tube side of the amp. Crank it up and it screams like a champ should, you can then adjust the volume on your guitar , like any old tube amp. Thats really the reason i bought it - to have the standard, basic 15-20 watt Fender 6V6 amp sound for not a lot of money. Im sure the other features are fine, if thats what you need but im here to tell you its also just a great little old school champ, without any of the added gadgets.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Ok, first off i have been playing for only two + years. I have now owned many amps and many guitars. This one continues to impress. I have had this amp for 6 months now and I want to tell you what i think. I put at least an hour on this amp everyday. It is durable. I currently have it sitting on a peavey 112 sx cabinet loaded with an eminence texas heat. The stock tubes have been replaced with a combo of JJ's and tung sol 12ax7 and re biased at 40%. The addition of new tubes was not a necessity, but an improvement. The sound quality is better than a marshall haze 40, egnater tweaker 15, vox valvetronix, fender mustang, line 6 spider... These have all been in the same room with the champ. Side by side these amps have been put to shame by the x2. I cant imagine getting better tone for the price. (you cant) This little guy is remarkable. With the fuse software I can make this thing sound like anything i want. BUY IT! This is the only home studio amp you will need. Insane beautiful cleans, to red hot hellish distortion. Tweed to metal. The modeling is the best i have heard. I have heard them all. Also the clean channel works great with pedals. Not that you need them. If i lost my equipment this would be the least inexpensive and the first to replace.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The only thing that would make this better is if it shipped with high-quality EL34 tubes.
If you replace the tubes, be sure to have it properly biased.
Sounds great, stock from the box. A few tweaks make it perform like a boutique amp.
Got this new and it worked perfectly. No problems yet. Didn't like the tubes, so immediately replaced them. That improved tone dramatically.
In today's economy, this is one of the best bargains I've found.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Best of Both Worlds - I'm an old tube amp fuy. This mixes the old school with high tech cool.
The 1st channel is straight up Fender Super Champ. 15 watts of pure tube tone.
The 2nd channel has 16 good amp models form Clean Tweed Champ to screaming 2000 Metal. Most of them are pretty good as is. I really like the 60's and 70's British (think Marshall). Digital effects are all pretty good (it has a real nice drippy reverb) and easily customizable using free Fender Fuse downloadable software via USB port. All models and effects are tube driven for real tube tone.
I'm loving this little amp so far and still have a lot of learning and playing to do.
I highly recomend this amp especially for the price.
16 Amp Models, a multitude of effects. All customizable with Fender's downloadable Fuse software via the USB port. What else could you want? Oh an included footswitch would be nice or maybe if a footswitch was even available for it(sold out all over).
It's a Fender everthing worked great right out of the Box.
The preamp GT-ECC83S seemed a little weak so I replaced it with an old stock RCA 12AX7A. Ahhh now that's much better.
This price for a 15W boutique tube amp with modeling and effects. Sounds like a great deat to me.

I bought this for fun but after hooking it up with a 4x12 Marshall cab it became the gig amp too. The sounds are great clean and powerful. I rarely use the presets. It's simply the best amp with a tube preamp and tube amp section for the money. Great AC/DC sounds. If you work with it you can get anything you want out of this little Fender.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I'm always looking for a small (portable) gig and practice amp that sounds like a black face Twin Reverb and a hot rod Marshall. I've accumulated a ton of amps over 30+ years of banging on guitars. This little fella stopped years of hunting for the perfect amp and coming up empty. I tried it in a big box store with a Blackheart single 12" cab. It drew a crowd right away. I had to have one.

The SCx2 head with my own speaker (a Warehouse Guitar Speaker Reaper 55hz in an open back Avatar 2x12 cab) sounded better at home than it did in the store…and that is saying something. The cleans rivaled, no actually surpassed, both of my Rivera Era Fender Concert (IIs). This thing actually made me believe I could be playing a mid '60s black faced Pro or Twin Reverb. I was convinced with the right pedal, this could be the portable practice amp I'd been looking for. The distortion voices weren't bad either, especially at louder volumes. So testing proceeded. I rewired my Avatar cabinet for two speakers at a combined 8 ohms (one 16 ohm Reaper 55hz, and one vintage Vox Silver Bell Celestion). Sounded even better, fuller, richer. Oh, and I should have mentioned like bass, especially in my cleans. Then testing took a whole new twist. I downloaded and installed the Fender Fuse software on my computer and hooked up a plain old usb cable. This is an absolute must, if you buy one of these amps.

Fuse software does many things. First and foremost, it allows you to see (and edit) the amp and cabinet simulations that are used for each "voice". It also gives you access to adjust amp controls that are not physically on the amp face, like mid-range tone control, or in some cases presence, and virtual tube bias. Fuse lets you add delay, reverb, chorus, compression, overdrive, tremolo, and some other effects to your "voices". In short, the Fuse software opens up the range of tonal possibilities exponentially.

The amp and cab simulations give more than adequate range of tonal choices. Some of my all time favorite real amps are simulated, including the 4x10 Bassman, Princeton Reverb, Twin Reverb, Jazzmaster, 60s Vox, 70s Marshall, a Dual Rectifier, and what may be Soldano. I saved 16 killer preset "voices", from sparkling ultra-cleans to dark aggressive metal tones, and everything in between. No dogs in the bunch. The cleans are nearly as good as any "real" tube amp I own. The distortions are believable and cutting. I haven't felt the need to stick a pedal in front of it after five weeks of tweaking. And, they all sound great a high or low volume. I even went out and bought a single 12" cabinet to see if these sounds would hold up as a more portable version of the "rig". It does!

The second channel is where the fun is. It adds physical gain and volume controls to the shared physical bass and treble controls, and a voice selector (1-16), effects selector and mix level to blend effects in. Using the Fuse software you can dig into the simulations to select an amp, select speaker cabinet simulations, and modify parameters of the amps and effects. Then you can save your virtual "voice" parameters as one of those 16 voices. You can also save effects packages to the positions on the effects selector knob. Spring reverb is really all I need to be happy. It can do that just fine too.

Since all of my Super Champ X2 voiced channel settings are built around a gain setting of 3, I usually just leave the gain control there-abouts and change voices or move the tone controls. Thant sort of makes the voice selector a pseudo channel selector. The amp reacts nicely to tone control adjustments. I mean that they do something and it is exactly what you want them to do, unlike some amps. It also is interesting to go up and down (talking like up to 5 down to 2) with the gain control. There is a ton of fun within these minor adjustments. The physical knobs (gain and tone controls) are what-you-see-is-what-they-are. They don't save as a value setting in the presets. This is only slightly frustrating part of the amp. I only wish there were 16 full presets where the tone controls and gain setting are saved too.

            Love it!

The Marshall and Vox settings sound a lot different than on the Super Champ XD. The clean sounds on the X2 are great...tons of great options. For crunch-time I prefer the British overdrive sound (#8) on the XD...but the Marshall and Vox sounds on the X2 still sound sweet...I'm not complaining. Great deal...the most versatile thing around.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've been playing guitar for almost 25 years, I am not a pro, but just a casual player who likes to play covers, and write and record some of my own music. I play mostly blues/rock.

I normally play two different guitars through this amp, a Fender american select mahogony body strat, and an epiphone flmaetop dot.

I prefer mostly a clean sound, with a little gain/od and reverb, which this amp is perfect for. I have yet to setup the fender fuse program and change any of the settings yet, but out of the box I find the old fender amp models to sound really good, but I don't really use any of the higher gain voicings.

I wanted a low watt, affordable tube amp for that tube sound that has a natural sustain and reverb that you just can't get with a solid state, even with amp models. Well this fit the bill, and them some.

For the price, paired with the SC112, it really is a bargain. Real tube tone, with so many extras, you just can't beat the price.

I highly recommend you try one of these out, and if you order one, don't worry about shipping. These came to me in some of the toughest cardboard boxes I have ever seen, and well packed, so no worries about damage.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Further to my review of Jan 7 2013, I used this amp and matching 1x12 cab for a year's worth of performance, rehearsal and recording situations and so far it has shone every time. My opinions of this amp have since altered, but overall not for the worse. On the downside, with a modest 15 watts I often need to slave it via the line-out to another amp for gigs, esp where you don't have good monitor sound, and loading an extra amp is a pain. But the tones out of this head are so good it's totally worth it to me. It's loud enough on its own for rehearsal with my loud-ish hard rock band, and ideal for recording as you can get such variety of great tube tones. Best of all, I get a ton of compliments on the tones out of the SCX2. Every other musician I have played with has said how good it sounds. It's versatile – I don't use a lot of effects, but I used FUSE to customize all my effect and voice settings and save them to the amp in my slots of choice. If you wanted to you could have a unique voice and effects setting for specific songs in your set. But this is not a Mustang, it's best at raw, tube-driven clean and overdrive tones, it excels tone-wise across the board from clean jazz to metal. Now that the tubes and speaker are fully broken in, the amp just sounds killer, there is no other word for it. I almost didn't buy this amp because I was worried it would not be loud enough – well it's not actually, sometimes – but man I am glad that I did, what a smokin' amp this little beauty is.

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp as a replacement for a FM 65 that was beginning to die on me. I thought I would use it for practice as well as in my home studio. When I first hooked everything up, (I bought the 112 cab for it too.) I noticed it didn't have the sound that I wanted. It was okay, but, I decided to hook up the computer and download the fender fuse software and started playing with the controls. turns out that most of the amp models have the midrange wide open. dial that back, and tweak the other knobs and you get a really good imitation DDR or Twin or Bassman and anything else you want! I got a great clean DRR sound and use that extensively with pedals in front of it and it does the Job quite effectively!
If you think that it's 15 watt rating is weak, think again, this thing is loud! and unlike the Blues Jr and HRD this amp doesn't distort! I had the thing on 7 and on the way there, never got to the saturation point. At first I didn't think I would use it on the gig, however, I find that I have used this amp for a number of gigs. Since I mic my amp anyway, I have plenty of power to spare. the effects sound really good for digital effects. Overall, Fender has scored on this amp. I think this head with it's mated 112 cab makes for one small compact and powerful package. I would suggest to fender that they revamp their combo version and replace that 10" with the 12" speaker. If you want a great amp that's lighweight, powerful and has plenty of tone, then give this head a try. I think if you tinker with it, you will find a number of sounds that will make you grin for ear to ear. Fender did a great job of moving the platform for this amp to the Mexico plant. In doing so, they have revamped the amplifier and made it into an amp that can be used anywhere, unless you're playing stadiums and even then with a mic on it, you never know?
give this amp a good try, I think you will like it.

Nice little tube amp! I have several small amps.[10 in all] I have the matching Fender 12" speaker cab, [It's rated at 80 watts, so it can be used with a BIGGER amp too!] One Pre-amp tube and a pair of 6V6's Nice fender sound! Get the Foot switch, to toggle between ch1 and ch2. Other button turns on/off-effects! I called Fender, and they said (2) 8 ohm loads "could" be used, and it "shouldn't" run HOT with the resulting 4 ohm load. Ya need spkrs. with in/out jacks, or a junction box, to do that! I ran it for quite a while with 2 Kustom 10" w/horn P/A Boxes. did fine at 4 ohms. However I wasn't Blasting! Nice little home or studio rig! Big enough for any Small/Med. venue if you use the line out to the P/A. I played Pro, for 45 yrs.- so Trust me! Back then I used a Peavey Black Widow Artist, Solid State Pre, 4X 6L6 Output stage. 12"BW Spkr. Weighs a ton! Still got it! I even ran that to the Mixer, to Spread Out the Guitar. No need for that kind of Power anymore. Didn't really need it then! This little Fender ROCKS!

Comments about Fender Super-Champ X2 HD 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This model sounds great with my Les Paul Junior and my Tele HH. I haven't played it much with my Strat or single coil Tele, but it works well with them also. It really loves that Tele HH, however, especially with a wah pedal.

The only thing that I really wish it had was that standby switch...Pretty good clean headroom, but it's only a 15 watter. You'd probably want a boost if you use a lot of clean when gigging.

I am rating this in relation to other small tube amp heads. If you need to play a larger venue than a small club, this won't work without a mic, but you probably knew that already.

This is not the holy grail of low wattage amp heads, but it IS the holy grail of INEXPENSIVE low wattage tube amp heads IMHO. Play one and you'll hear for yourself. 'Nuff said.
Two power tubes and one preamp tube let the tone of this vintage modified amp shine through. The voicings are great. There are 18 of them from vintage tweed tones to super high gain modern sounds. You can also download others from Fender Fuse or something. I'll probably try that at some point. My faves are the '70's British and the Supersonic, but I play a lot of gainy stuff. The cleaner voicings are awesome as well.

This model also has 15 pre-loaded effects. My favorite is the Classic Fender Spring Reverb. Very natural sounding through my Avatar 212 cab with Celetion Greenbacks. It also has Delay, Chorus & Tremolo settings.

Only a 9 because I'm not real fond of the delay with TAP feature and it doesn't have a standby switch. I applaud Fender for putting in so many high quality "goodies" at this price.
Can't rate it because I'm still putting it through the paces. I've had it for less than a week, but I did own a Fender Super Champ XD that held up very well. I traded it because it only came in a combo and only had a 10 inch speaker. I expect that this head will hold up fine, but time will tell.
Great product at a great price.

If you don't want to sacrifice vintage Fender tone in order to get an amp that has great dirty tones, this is the ticket. And...look at the price!

I've had Mesa Boogie, Fender Deluxe, Egnater, Epiphone & Vox tube amps. I also have a Line6 solid state. This one is replacing a Blackstar HT20 Head that cost almost twice as much because it sounds better to my ears. This is the best one that I have owned for the money. It's also right up there for the tone. It does cleans like a Fender should and it gets raunchy like the Egnater & the Boogie. Unless you're loaded, save your money and buy this one.
