OVERVIEW

Delivers the great acoustic tone of studio miking in a versatile preamp.

The Fishman Aura Spectrum DI is a complete, professional all-in-one solution for the performing musician. Award-winning Aura technology restores a studio-miked sound to your undersaddle or soundhole pickup. Housed in a professional-quality direct box with features like 3-band EQ, a one-knob compressor, and Automatic Feedback Suppression, the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI delivers world-class acoustic tone on stage or in the studio.

Fishman Aura preamps and onboard imaging systems go beyond modeling to create a spacious sound that is both vivid and natural. The sound of your acoustic instrument in a room is a combination of time, space and distance, that’s why no matter how great your undersaddle pickup or soundhole microphone sounds — (and they can sound fantastic), there is still something missing — the instrument’s aura. To recreate the sound that naturally surrounds your instrument in a room through an amplifier or PA, we created Aura imaging technology.

Imaging — Beyond Modeling
Using a selection of the most coveted microphones and Fishman's Aura algorithms, they developed a library of “images” that when blended with the pickup sound on your guitar, create a dramatic, natural sound.
All Aura products come loaded with a selection of images. And depending on the device, your Aura is pre-loaded with a selection of images that correspond to your specific guitar model or are a "greatest hits" from Fishman's Aura image library. As an Aura owner, you can download images from the image library at Fishman's website to customize yourr Aura to match your own performance requirements.

Aura Image Gallery
Fishman’s Aura Image Gallery software is a PC/Mac-compatible application that allows users to access images for hundreds of guitar makes and models through their free Aura image library. Once installed on your PC or Mac, the software also allows Aura images to be sorted, managed, and grouped. You can then take advantage of the preamp’s open architecture by loading Aura images via a USB cable.

FEATURES
  • 128 pre-loaded Images for use with the most popular acoustic instruments

I bought the Fishman Aura last December and wanted to use it a lot before writing a review so here I am 7 months later. I am very very happy with it.
I am a semi-working musician and play about 5 gigs a month with it using a Taylor 810ce. It does indeed "Kill the Quack" and gives a much better acoustic sound. To my ear, the built in images were not what i wanted so it is all about downloading from the Fishman site into the 16 open slots. I found one I like pretty well, but is not perfect, so I will continue to rummage thru the other images available til I find what I really really like. Fishman says try to use an image closest to your guitar, but I do it a little differently. My one criticism of my Taylor's sound is that it is maybe a little too bright and the fact that I use fingerpicks doesn't help that out. So the Taylor images sound very very bright and trebley to me - which is likely accurate. So i actually settled on a Martin D35 image and it tones down that brightness beautifully.
I find this one image works for me in big and small clubs and across a variety of house PA systems. I start with the guitar and aura flat on tone controls and then let the sound guy do his thing. When he has it where he wants it, I quietly do some last adjustments on the Aura tone controls and that does it. The tuner is adequate, the anti-feedback stunned me the first time i used it - it just grabbed 3 pesky frequencies and took them out. Have used it a few times since and it was not as impressive, but still helpful. I do not use the DI output as I go out of the Aura to a volume pedal and Boss loop station before I go to a separate DI and then to the house system.
Expensive? Yep. Worth it? Yep!!!!

Images and down-loading them? Use your e.q. and pay less for a D.I. box. If you buy the hype about images, that's why it's priced so high; in two years, you won't be able to down-load a thing, just like the original Aura - no follow-up. Save money, buy a basic D.I. box and "color" your tone with cheaper and just as good Boss pedals.

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

This is a great pedal for playing live. It does take a bit of playing around with the settings to find just the "right sound for your ears" I guess it depends on the kind of guitar you're running thru the box. The compression helps out a lot if you're a big strummer, kind of takes out the jangle and high twangy sound you get from the PA speakers. Once you get it dialed in, I think it's the best electric/acoustic sound i've heard hands down. I've tried quite a bit of combos over the years and I think this is a keeper. It's a little pricy but catch it on sale. Spend a couple evenings experimenting and download the extra user settings, you'll love it.

Aura Spectrum DI and GTR PreAmp great device

          By

          from Maryland

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

The closest thing I have to a "dislike" is that they could've provided more detail in the software help menu. That would've saved me a bit of time when I first tried to download images. However, once I figured it out, it was quite easy so...it is of little consequence. I think this is an outstanding product.
This product works as advertised. It changes the sonic footprint of the guitar output before it reaches your amp. I found it very easy to use right out of the box, and I was fairly easily able to figure out how to download images from the manufacturer's website to add to the "user" bank of sounds. Not much detail of documentation provided, but I was able to deduce, with a little trial and error, how to store sounds in the provided software, and then load 16 at a time into the device's preset bank. It is VERY easy to use once plugged in and hooked up. You can easily adjust the mix between the guitar pick and the output of the Preamp, plus you have a simple compressor, EQ, feedback buster, and even a tuner thrown in for good measure (although the tuner does not appear to be exceptionally sensitive).

To my surprise, MANY of the settings complimented my guitars and resophonic, even when using settings that did not closely match my actual instruments. The differences were sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle. I heard more difference with the mic changes than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. (I was afraid my ordinary old ears wouldn't be able to distinguish any difference) Often one setting was quite different from another, but yet they both sounded good. If a particular setting did not sound good with my particular instrument, no problem. I just spun the dial or moved to another bank of "images" until I soon found something else that sounded great.
The sound quality is great, which is what is most important to me. However, it is a plus that it is of solid metal construction and appears to be sturdy. It is also quite attractive in appearance, very well-crafted, and not junky or tacky looking. The controls are all easy to read.
I was concerned that I might be paying too much for this device, having to go only by the company's hype and a few reviews before purchasing. However, I love this thing, the item is well worth the purchase price in my opinion.

Aura Spectrum with other than Fishman Pickups

          By

          from Plano, Texas

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

Would have loved to have given this device a ten, but..... You really need to research this device before you buy it. Optimum results are obtained ONLY when you use the Fishman undersaddle Matrix pickup. I have a Western Mini in a D-35 that works OK in that I can get a respectible sound, but not great. I have 2 Taylors with the Expression Systems and you have to disable the sound board pickups to feed the signal into this device. Again, disapointing twaingy results, but, it will work. I play a D-45 through a mic. Unfortunately, you can't run a mic through this box. On the other hand, my buddy has a Gibson Songwriter with the correct Fishman pickup and it sounds fantastic.
This device is totally feature rich. I'm still trying to figure out how everything works, and, I'm still discovering new stuff.
Built like a tank. It should last for years.
Bit pricey, but, price depends upon your application and what you want this device to do.

          the greatest misinterpreted unit ever

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

i think there are a few people that are confused about the functionality of this pedal. it's not a modeler. what this thing does is enhance the sound of your instrument. if you have a 12 string, it will make your 12 string sound so much more natural by using the 12 string settings. it won't make a 6 string sound like a 12 string. it doesn't work that way. i just purchased a martin guitar equipped with the aura technology and couldn't be happier. all my friends are tying to figure out why my instrument sounds so great. if a modeler is what you are looking for, i would recommend checking out a line6 unit of some sort, but this pedal sure made it easy to get that "sound" of why you bought the instrument in the first place. it adds that fullness back to those thin twangy sounding piezzo pickups.
coolest preamp i've ever seen for acoustic instruments. soundmen are gonna freak when you send them this signal.
i would say a little expensive, but i would pay it. i don't think the price is reasonable for new guitarists yet, but i think it's just about worth every penny.

          Fishman Aura Spectrum DI

          By

          from Spokane,Wa.

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

It's built very well. It sounds awesome and looks cool.It just needs some Nationals in the data base.
The Aura Spectrum is an essential tool for any acoustic guitarist, who likes the sound of a mic'd instrument, without having to stay in one spot.
The Aura's anti-feedback feature is a lifesaver and the controls are easy to use.(a colored dot on the knobs would make the levels easier to see at a glance). The amount of volume you get without feedback, when you first plug it in, will impress you. And it has built in tuner!
The Aura also can be connected to your computer, via USB (cable included)so you can choose from a data base of guitar brands like Gibson, Martin etc.and microphones like Neumann and Shure. The selection for resonator guitars is lacking. No Nationals are listed. I'm hoping Fishman will remedy this problem.
You can also use the factory pre-sets, if you don't own a computer. There are quite a few and they sound great! I use mine mainly plugged into a P.A.,but it works great in an amp, also.
The Fishman Aura Spectrum DI uses one nine volt battery, which lasts for 20 hours or you can buy an optional ac adapter.
The Aura Spectrum is housed in an aluminum box, with aluminum knobs and is built for the road.
I like the way the battery fits with NO cheesy clips and wires that break when you try to jam it in a too small compartment.
A little pricey for the working musician, but you get what you pay for in this case.

          You Can't go wrong

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

simply put, it'll make your guitar sound yummy
Trying to find that perfect sound for your acoustic guitar can be frustrating. I went to a Ricky Skaggs concert and Ricky was using the Aura Spectrum when he played guitar. Yes Ricky normally plays mandolin, but also does a few acoustic tunes. After hearing his guitar, I walked up to the stage to see what he was running his guitar through. Sure thing.....it was an Aura Spectrum...and it sounded great. I had to have one for myself and have not looked back. You gotta get one.
          Well Built
The good stuff always cost more

          great pedal, bad experience

          By

          from Atlanta

Comments about Fishman Aura Spectrum DI and Guitar Preamp:

The pedal is excellent. It actually made my acoustic guitars sound like acoustic guitars, through a pa, running direct. Very nice. I gave the 7 again because I received the returned, used, abused and broken one and that's not Fishman's fault. Otherwise it would have been a 10. The unit itselt is the best acoustic guitar pre-amp I've used yet live, and the easilly downloadable images are really great. You can forget about live mics and the near impossible reproduction of your guitar's natural sound though acoustic amps
I'm giving the 7 because the problem wasn't the fault of Fishman. The unit arrived in obvious used, abused, and broken condition. There were fingerprints and scratches all over it and a couple of parts loose and it didn't work at all. The Fishman power adapter I bought with it was also used, scratched and some kind of goo on it with, believe it or not...cat hair stuck to it....after too many times during the past few months with the same situation, I've had enough...went to guitar center, bought another Aura Spectrum DI and it works great
          well made unit
great value if you're lucky enough to get one, new in the box
