This pedal, if you know how it SHOULD sound, sounda absolutely amazing. I haven't played many octave fuzzes, but I don't see it getting much better than this. Good, thick, juicy tone. I tried this out for about 15 minutes, for the most part running an Eric Johnson Rosewood into an Orange 30 watt, with the gain maxxed. With the boost all the way, and the volume at unity, this thing flat out SCREAMED. Not much of an octave left, but it sounded very awesome. . . A good effect to throw in every once in a while, to make people wonder what planet you came from. Now with the boost at about half, with the volume at unity, there was plenty of gain, and plenty of octave. This was probably my favorite setting on the octave side, sounded great on top of that already driven tube amp.Now to the fuzz side. . . Outstanding. I'm not sure about the transistors, but it sounded very silicon, and I wouldn't doubt if it was. A kind of raspier fuzz, but was still very thick. this would make a great stand-alone, which is a lot more than about any other octave box can say.I think Fulltone made an absolute winner. . . It would be fun to have two, and use one as a fuzz, and one as an octave. . .
Very cool little unit. You'll be sounding like Hendrix in no time. The fuzz isn't outright thick, but it has a really unique sound. The only complaints I have is that the octave does wash out at higher settings and the pedal has soooo much gain past 12 o'clock that it's almost unusable. If you do get it, mod it so that the boost and volume are true unity pots.
Although I am not extremely experienced with fuzz, this thing floored me. I tried this thing using an Eric Johnson strat into an Orange amp alread set dirty. With the "boost" (fuzz) level cranked, and the volume set to match the bypass (around 9 o'clock), there was infinite sustain to be had. Although these settings made the octave up mode virtually useless, the fuzz position on this pedal also sounds great. Normally with good octave fuzzes, you get a great octave sound, and an okay fuzz sound. This things fuzz position, of the few pedals I have tried, is the best of the lot. It's still not what I am looking for exactly, I would like it a little creamier, but it does sound quite good. This unit is also quite charming. Where you could get the Ultimate Octave (which in my opinion doesn't have near as good of a fuzz tone) and have that always present, loud, and anything but subtle octave up, I loved this unit because of it's unreliability (haha kind of ironic). When you could in the upper fuzz levels, the octave becomes delayed, random, or sometimes just doesn't happen. Some people might see this as a drawback, but I was having so much fun with it I could'nt have cared less. It's unpredictability makes it more exciting as a player, and definately more fun.Overall, from what I experienced with this unit, and reading additional reviews of it, I don't think octave fuzzes get much better than this beauty. And compared to the original octave fuzz this is based off of, this price is a bargain.
