I've been playing for a lot of years and because I'm older and smarter now I looked for a system that was straight forward with plenty of power and most of all these days portable. I found all of that with Gallien-Krueger. I use this head with a GK 410 4ohm NEO cabinet bi amped to get every bit of that power. This setup handles the low B of my Fender's and Lakland's with ease. (The 410 NEO is a powerful lightweight cabinet which I can actually lift and put in the trunk of my car all by myself without singing soprano.)I have never had a situation where I have ever felt as though I didn't have enough head room or that I couldn't hear myself on stage with this head. The sound guys all agree it has a great sound that is easy to work with and easily comes through in the mix. I always get compliments on my sound on every job especially from other players. I started out years ago with the GK 800RB and it served me well and most of all dependably for many years. As I got older and was able to afford boutique amps I did and I strayed away from GK spending big bucks looking for a better sound and never found it. Nobody gives more bang for the buck than GK does and none of those expensive amps were as well defined live with the sound such as this amp produces and most were not nearly as straight forward to use. This head is just straight forward clear defined bass tone with easy to use controls and no messing around. Just jack in and play. Enough said!

The GK1001 is a really good head with plenty of power and headroom. I was surprised it had that much of both with the GEO@8OHm cab. I usually play all tube Ampegs, but I really like this for clean audiohile headroom, especially for articulation and slap. Do yourself a favor and buy the 4-way cable directly from GK so you can bi-amp the head. You will be surprised how the amp comes to life.

I would have given it 4 stars instead of 3, but after all it is GK! Terrible quality problems with the 700 and 800RB. Few problems reported w/ the 1001 but I am distrusting enough to buy the Musician's Friend 3 year warranty. Like I said, it's not the 90's and this is GK

Unleash The Beast!

By Anonymous

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

Unleash the beast! I just bought this head a few days ago and hooked it up to my Neo 212-II cabinet, in which I bought as well. The beast has been unleashed! Here's my story. I'm the owner/bassist of my 10-piece band, that I formed in 1996. As for bass amps, I have a SWR 160 head, Ampeg B2 head w/4-10" cabinet, a David Eden CSX 300 combo, a Peavey cabinet w/15" and 2-6" tweeters, a Carvin 18" cabinet, and even an old vintage Sunn head w/tubes. Absolutely none of these, mixed or matched, came even close to the sound I'm getting from this GK rig. I put this head in a rack with a Squeeze compressor and a BBE maximizer, and oh my goodness! The high and low end is awesome, but don't cut yourself short by using this head with a cabinet that doesn't have the (horns/high end) if you want this head to serve it's full purpose. I connected a Sans Amp Tech 21 effects box for experimentation (more EQ), but it defeated the purpose. It hurt more than it helps. Lost some power. And speaking of power from this head? I play with my church choir in a fairly large santuary. I turn the volumn no more than 8:00 position, and that's too loud! I'm thinking about buying another GK rig for my band to keep from transpoting this one back and forth between gigs and playing in church every Sunday. I will probably buy a 700RB head with the same cabinet to use for church, and use the one I have for gigs. I would recommend this head to ANY bass player who's looking for that "ultimate" sound. From reggae to slappin', this head will give you what you want. A distinct sound that will send other bass players running to you asking about the rig you're using. I don't know of any other brand that can top this one. Let this be your next purchase!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

I was very pleased with this purchase. I was looking for a powerful, bi-amp capable head with great tone and neccessary features. I found it in this unit. Very pleased with the sound I am able to get from this amp, along with the tone controls, bi-amp switching and controls (used with a GK cabinet, of course). It gives me the control I need over the sound without extra, useless features to add cost. I find this to be a much greater value-for-money deal than the Ampeg SVT-3, which I have used extensively. Good amp but overpriced. Not so in this case. You get what you pay for and then some. I personally prefer the sound, too. I do wish it came with a headphone jack, though, but that is no deal-breaker. This is a stage amp anyway, and there are ways to get around that thanks to the direct out feature. Overall, very pleased with this equipment.

Transparent Power

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

An Ampeg SVT3Pro served me kindly for a number of years. However, with the current project even with a 4x10 and 1x15 cab, and the SVT3 maxed out, I was often ?pulling the strings harder? in a vain attempt to be heard. I bought the 1001RB based on price, power rating, and the desire to play something different, and it has turned out to be one of the best gear purchases that I've ever made. It sounds great at low practice volume in my apartment. It sounds spectacular with the band. In short, apparently GK knows what they are doing. BUY THIS AMP. Your ears and fingers will thank you.

Overall, a great amp...

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

I bought the 1001RB as a combo with the 115 RBH speaker (GK has since discontinued this combo) and it was a great honeymoon with the amp until the wheels disintegrated about a year ago...bought new wheels from the kind folks at GK, but they fell apart as well...anyway, the head itself is amazing, everything you ever wanted in a head, this thing will provide. Deep resonating lows and clean crisp highs. It takes some tweaking, but the 1001RB pulled some serious midrange growl out of my Stingray 5, which is now easy task!!! I removed the head from the combo, bought a GK 410 amp, contacted GK and bought the outer shell for the 1001RB and now use it as a head/separate amp combo and all is well in my bass playing world. Buy this head and pair it with a great 410 or 212 amp and you will be in heaven...

Brilliant

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

I pair this amazing head with a rare Music Man Audiophile 4x10 cab I found online...what a rig!!(why oh why did Ernie Ball discontinue the production on the bass cabs?? nothing on the planet compares to them...) I get an onslaught of bass players rushing me like an incoming tide after any show, asking me to lift the veil on my rig...(I cover it with assorted fabric for our stageshow). GK has cut their own trail on the engineering end of things, and they're at the top of their game with this head. I used to rent the RB800 when touring with a dancehall reggae crew, and it would flatten the venue with the thickest, fattest and smoothest bass bombs. In recent years, I moved into diverse area's of music, and played dozens of different rigs, ignoring GK because I'd pigeon holed them as a heavy cream diet, sounding best when all the highs and mids were rolled back, a la Robbie Shakespeare Dub. When I came across an add for the 1001RB, I took it for a spin at my local music store.... What a ballistic weapon of mass basstruction! Totally true transparent power!! VERSATILE!!!

I use this in a studio where I do overdubs. It's not moved so can't talk about that. I get a wide range of tones and sounds with it just as it is. The lows are crisp enough I run the EQ flat. I run the DI as post-EQ and have never had to switch to a direct box. Easy to use. BTW the negative review here is about speakers - not this unit. It should be posted in another location. Thanks.

I've used this amp for around 800 shows since I got it and it's never skipped. I play a custom p-bass with a swr 12pack. Sound is incredible! I've used it to push 18's, 15's, 8x10's, 6x10's, pretty much everything and it's always easy to dial in for whatever cab or style. Lot's of power so there's plenty of headroom. I was an engineer for some pretty big names prior to playing full time so I'm a tone freak. Go with this one and you will not be disapointed! Wil in Orange Beach, AL

The Gallien Krueger 1001RB is nothing short of spectacular. The functionality of this amp is a plus compared to other heads on the market, but the sound, volume, and tone of this head is making a new name for Solid-State. I even started to call it "Beast-Mode". If you are a Bass player and think that tube is the way to go, think again, this head blows away most tube heads and you will NEVER have to worry about Volume with this head. You want another fun fact? The Bass Rig the backing musicians on "The Voice" use is this exact Bass head. Its that good, its professional, its versatile, and it don't dissapoint, buy it!

I discovered G-K in 1974 - the 800RB - and haven't been disappointed since. I had that amp for well over 10 years, and never had it serviced. Finally sold it to move up to the first generation 1001RB- which I still use along with the new 1001. I have 410 cabs, 210 cabs, an 8x10- and they all sound fantastic with this amp. If you don't have one of these - if only as a back-up - you are missing out on some really great sound, power, and quality for bass players.

I kind wish the patch bay was on the back, but other than that, it's a great amp!!! The only problems I've had are the occasional power cut-off, right after I turn it on, but that's because I've got it plugged into a bad house circuit. That aside, it's everything I want in an amp -- good tone and lots of power in a lightweight package.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II 700/50W Biamp Bass Head:

Let me first get the one negative out of the way so that I can go on about how amazing this amp is. The only negative is that the cooling fan is on the top so if it is mounted in a rack you need to leave at least one rack space. Now thats out of the way let me go on about how great this amp is. The features on this amp are some of the most usable features I've ever seen. The five string switch is brilliant, I play an Ibanez SRX705 which has a very high output but with this switch engaged this amp handles it with no problem. I know some people look at the fact that it only has four EQ controls and think that its not enough, but trust me it is, what good is control of a lot of frequencies if none of them are usable? Each band on this amp are tailored specifically for bass. But don't forget this amp also has a contour and presence knob which gives you more tonal shaping. I sure if you're looking at this amp you already know about the bi-amp feature. This feature is the most brilliant function on this piece of equipment. Don't forget though to utilize this feature you need to use certain gallien-krueger cabs (such as sbx or rbh). And these amps are light, plus it has power for days. But lets not forget the sound if the amp doesn't sound good who cares what features it has, well I can assure you it sounds amazing. So save your money and your back and skip the Ampeg, buy gallien.

I have been playing bass for over 20 years. During that time, I have tried everything from Peavey to Hartke to Ampeg. In fact I got rid of an SVT all Tube head and 810 cab for this GK setup. The Gallien Krueger 1001RB is easily the best amp I have ever used. I use it with GK's 410RBH cabinet and run it in bi-amp mode. There is plenty of power and the tone is amazing. I like tone similar to Marcus Miller and with this setup in conjunction with an Aphex Bass Exciter I can get it. I use a Musicman Stingray 5 string, a 1976 Fender Precision, Warwick Thumb Bass and a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass. This amp sounds great with all of them I also play gigs ranging from small clubs to large outdoor venues and this amp can handle them all.

Well, after using this head for about a month, I'm proud to say that GK has made another amazing product. This head is a beast, and can power just about anything you want it to. Unfortunately, I don't have a GK cab that enables the Bi-amping feature of the head, but that's the next item I'm saving for. However, even without the Bi-amp setup, the 1001RB-II still sounds great. The only thing I'm not fond of is the placement of the fan. Eventually, I'll upgrade to the 2001, just so I can have a little more power and a fan on the back. Buy this amp and you won't be let down.

I got my 1001rb last summer (2004) and have played over 180 shows since. We play a lot of different rooms and I use it to power a SWR 12pack (2-12 custom series) and it's tone is good for everything. Jazz, funk, trance, reggae, rock and roll. This amp is the goods. I put it in an SKB case and never had a problem.

Just got the 1001 RBII head and wow, complete control over tone. You can shape your sound anyway you want and it will handle any style of music. You can play it loud, you can play it soft and it sounds great.
