Gallien-Krueger

A combo with extensive tone-shaping features that delivers big sound in a light, compact package.

The Gallien-Krueger MB115 200W 1x15 Ultralight Bass Combo Amp is an addition to GK’s legendary MicroBass Series. It delivers a big sound from a light, compact package. At 200W the MB115 has the power to be heard in any situation. It's designed with preamp tone-shaping circuitry that feeds into a lightweight Class-D power amp. The preamp uses GK's 4-band active tone control section with a Contour preset feature. There are both Passive and Active bass inputs and a defeatable Limiter for controlling your sound. The 15" Paragon speaker is extremely sensitive and makes this amp surprisingly loud. The horn tweeter can be engaged or not to suit different playing environments or to further shape your sound. An 1/8" Aux. input and headphone jack allow for silent practice along with an MP3 player or other sound source. An XLR DI output is included for recording or live sound reinforcement.

Equalization
Standard tone controls and graphic equalizers give you plenty of variation, but they don’t provide what the instrument really needs. The fact is, graphic equalizers are intended for room equalization. The equalization in Gallien-Krueger amplifiers reflects 40 years of continuous development and refinement.

The GK equalizer is unique to the industry, it’s not just a normal four band equalizer, each section is a special circuit optimized to perform a Bass specific job in its range of operation.

These sections are wired in series, adding to one another, to create a tremendously flexible equalizer that sounds natural at any setting. Now it is possible to obtain the sound you desire.

Contour
The Contour is used to complely revoice the amplifier by tuning between two different shaping circuits, with greatly different responses. With the control engaged, the low end is slightly boosted, the mids are dropped and the high end is pushed up.

Limiter
The limiter is designed to detect signal levels at the input of the power amp that cause unwanted distortion. It attenuates extreme peaks to allow high volume output while maintaining signal integrity.

“G.I.V.E.” Technology
The MB210, MB115 and MB212 pre-amps incorporate G.I.V.E (Gate Induced Valve Effect) Technology. Field effect devices are used with the gate biased in a way that emphasizes the optimum harmonic content of the signal. Working in conjunction with the unique four band active equalizer and contour, G.I.V.E. technology produces a consistently pleasing bass tone.

I've had this amp for three years. It's not trustworthy. It quit working after 2.5 years. It's been in the shop twice. The horn hisses very loudly. I was told "all bass amp horns hiss" Nonsense. I bought a Behringer half-stack and it was quiet. I just don't use the horn, or it's nifty horn control feature. I can't trust this amp on stage, which is why I bought it. It just quits working intermittently. Sending it to the shop for the 3rd time today.

When I first plugged into the MB-115 11, it gave me a big smile-
It has such a solid, warm tone. The next time I played with a group
of friends, I found myself playing long, slow notes and just holding them,
the amp giving forth a solid supportive floor to the music.

My only recommendation- it would be great if it came with casters.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB115-II 200w 1X15 Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I plugged my Sterling (active pickup) into this amp. It has a -10Db pad, which is good for my bass, and after I fiddled with it for a while I was able to get the kinda tone I wanted from it. Then I tried cranking it up to see how it would hold up. I was shocked at how quiet it was. There was very little difference between halfway and all the way. I got a little more oomph by taking off the limiter, but then I got a farting distortion noise from the low end. Even at full volume, I knew I could not compete with my drummer and two guitar players. Furthermore, the tone started to go downhill pretty fast the more I cranked it. I decided to return if after playing with it for a half hour or so.

Unfortunately the first amp I received was broken.I contacted GK and within a week it was exchanged for a new one. It produces the highest quality sound for a bass amplifer that is light weight and portable, and is sure to help any musician mold and create the sound they are looking for. Quality Craftmanship made here in the USA by leaders in the Industry!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB115-II 200w 1X15 Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

Pleasantly surprised by this 35-pound, 200 watt bass amplifier. Last played bass regularly over 20 years ago for my university jass ensamble... back then it was through a Peavey Combo 300 that weighed a ton. Technology has clearly advanced in the past 20 years.

Did a workshop this past weekend with over 100 symphonic players from across the region. This GK was rich, provided absolute presence, and didn't even begin to break a sweat.

The power, tone, and growl of this GK are all better than my old 300-watt Peavey, and it's truly light for easy transport. I'm playing an Ibanez SR250 through it, and I think the sound is phenomenal considering what I didn't pay for the kit. I'm already looking at higher-end basses to better compliment the tone I'm sure this amplifier is capable of achieving. I've been told GK makes the best in the industry, and I'm starting to believe it.

Despite tha fact that I was fired from my bass player position by my own band the first night I used this amp, it sounded great, and at 67 years old, it was a pleasure to tote this amp. Well, anyone need a bass player?

Once again Musicians Friend gets it done. Right from the first call to delivery, their customer service is second to none. This unit is perfect for solo gigs right to a four or five piece band. In previous years, I traveled with and transported heavy bass rigs. GK's MB115-ii weighs the same as an average 3 yr old. Light weight, fat sound, and great quality and craftsmanship. Don't think "Just Get It"

I've owned them all including GK. They make the best. This pre-amp w/ minor adjustment will mimic every other amp I have used...even a B15. It's plenty loud and I personaly prefer a good 15" speaker. I sold my markbass gear...too sterile. This amp has growl and the MB does not.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB115-II 200w 1X15 Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

Been playing bass for 43 years. Have owned Standel-Traynor-Kustom-Acoustic-Ampeg-GK-Eden-Markbass. I wanted light and powerful w/ good tone and that's what I got. I use fender 4's w/ flats and for me the ampeg B15 is the holy grail, but it's heavy and underpowered, and the new portaflex sealed cabs are not to my liking. I owned markbass and while it sounded good it lacked "growl" and it was rear ported which meant stage position had a great effect on sound. The GK is front ported, has a 15" speaker which is my choice, and IMO plenty loud enough for small-mid size gigs, and at larger gigs you have direct out for PA support. Easy to haul which is important for this aging musician, it's ruggedly built, and for me the GK tone stack is the best/most useful there is. I can tweak a few controls and find the sound of every single amp i ever used. This is the BEST combo on the market and for what I like it sounds way better than the mega-hyped markbass did at less than 1/2 the money.Tip: set the gain to 50%or higher, add about 50-75% boost, set the tone flat and tweak the bass a little bit as u adjust, push in the contour button, set the limiter to your liking, turn off the horn, and use the master volume for the loudest B15 you've ever heard. Want Sklar tone?; use a fender w/ rounds and tweak away....it'll do that as well. Now that's a pro preamp! You get what you put in. GK make the best bass amps on earth.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB115-II 200w 1X15 Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I first got accustomed to this amp through a friend of mine who let me borrow it a few times, and quickly bought one for myself. At first I was a bit disappointed in the tone, but I am starting to like it the more I use it.
It may seem like this 200 watt beast is not good for gigs; but the XLR input allows for easy PA adjustment, which allows you to keep up in those larger venues. Any type of bass or music genre works for this great amp. I have used it to go from a deep, rhythmic, thick tone all the way up to the extreme-high clank and crunch for metal. And with the press of the little 'Horn' button, you can make your passive bass sound more active and vibrant on the higher notes. I have also had a ton-o-fun playing my iPod through the auxiliary-in as well.
One of my favorite things about this amp is the fact that the two guitarists in my metal band have a fat sum of money invested in their equipment and their amps that they use during practice, and this amp can keep up (if not exceed at certain times) with them. All for one-tenth of the price.
Another surprising fact about this amp is its light weight. Most amps this size might be a bit clunky and heavy, but this featherweight amp is easy to pick up and carry around.
At shows, the bass and low-end can feel a bit lacking if the amp is not elevated. But once you get on a stage, the height will clear that problem right up.
Obviously, this is not the amp to use for professional shows. But even a professional player can use this as a high-end practice amp. Personally, I would recommend this to anyone looking to get into bass playing and playing with bands. It will last you for a while without needing any upgrade.
