I've always owned two bass heads so I'd have a backup.

Recently, I acquired a somewhat capable combo, so felt it was time to ditch the spare head.

This plan was a dumb idea, since hauling around a large combo with my rig, was not practical. I needed something small; like a doughnut spare that most cars have. It didn't have to be as capable as my main bass head, but had to be just enough to get me through any gig.

Enter the GK MB200

PROS:
-This amp is tiny, light, and will fit into the pocket of most gig bags.

-The tone is what floored me. It has an aggressive, punchy, tight sound that makes my main head seem ho hum.

-I'm in a KISS tribute band. This little amp got me easily through a gig when my main amp started having issues. It had plenty of juice, nicely powered one of my cabs, and I occasionally use it at rehearsals now.

-The EQ is simple, and easy to dial in on the fly.

-The price is right for a quality piece of gear.

-The fan is quiet.

CONS:
-Speakon is the only speaker output on this amp. My main amp has banana jack and ¼".

-My main amp has an efx loop that I use with my rack tuner for muted tuning. This amp just has line out and a return, but the return is 1/8" jack.

-The power cord that it came with didn't securely seat into the amp's electrical socket. I swapped out the cord, and no further issues.

-If you're one of those who likes parametric EQ's, this amp may be too simple for your taste.

-It can really only power one of my 410 cabs. My main amp can power both.

-The biggest advantage and disadvantage this amp has is its size. While small, light, and easy to transport, it can also be easily stolen at a gig. However, if rack ears are purchased, it can be racked. A nice idea, but placing this amp in a bulky rack defeats the purpose of owning a micro head.

I'm happy with my new spare amp. It gives me exactly what I need, and it is way more powerful than I anticipated. I am so impressed that I plan swapping out my main amp with the MB200's 800 watt big brother.

In that I was ultimately dissatisfied to the degree that I decided not to keep the amp, again, I have to personally give it a "Terrible" rating. Again, setting aside the noise level issue I experienced, I took it a rehearsal and small bar gig, and it did well. I play classic rock next to a loud drummer, and in that situation, the MB200 was capable a produced a great sound. In terms of wanting to carry it as a back-up and use it at home for practice, I could not accept the noise level.
The feature set on this amp is nice, but expectedly and appropriately limited, considering its size and price class. The lack of a master volume or mute feels overly limiting in certain situations. The basic set of tone controls can be looked at as refreshing and offers a great range of usable sounds. The contour switch brings you immediately to a nice, fat, rich bedroom tone. Not so great in a band situation but a great sound for practice. A really nice feature is that the line-in goes through the speaker output, giving you the option to do heaphone or speaker practice. Other amps that I'm aware of limit line-in to headphone out.
I believe the overall quality of construction of this amp is decent, but I give it a "Terrible" rating due to the hiss noise level I experienced. I noticed a significant hiss noise was always present, whether cabinet or headphone, even with the gain at 0. I exchanged the first one I got and found the same problem with the second unit. I have returned the second one for refund.
Setting aside the noise problem, this is a great price.

Comments about MB200 200W Ultra Light Bass Amp Head:

Based on the reviews and small size I ordered this and I am very satisfied. I had been using an old bass head from 1982 or power amps for years and this GK unit sounds great. I was surprised that it did not heat up at all during my gig whereas my power amp always gets very hot even at low volumes. The tone controls work great and everyone in my band was impressed by the GK with a small size, but big sound.

Haven't used it outside a recording situation yet, but I've experienced no hum or hiss as I've seen reported in other reviews. I've used it as a preamp only as I don't have a cab.

been play GK gear since the mid 90's and was always drawn to them because of that "growl" so I don't know why GK would ever make a head without the boost knob, if this head had it it would replace my 400rb for sure.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB200 200W Ultra Light Bass Amp Head:

As a follow up to my previous review: This last Saturday my band played at the Craterian in Medford Oregon, Southern Oregon's premier events venue. It was a sold out show, so the place which has a balcony and theater style seating basically all the way to the large stage had plenty of bodies to absorb sound. I use an American made Jazz bass (S1 switch engaged)and an MB 200 going through a NEO 210 daisy chained to a NEO 115. All the controls are pretty much straight up, contour switch off. At the mid-afternoon sound check the sound guy commented on my amazing full tone, and had me turn "down" the stage volume. I was only at 1:00 on the master and 11:00 after he had me turn down. Short of an outside stadium show, this was probably the best test of this amps ability to step out front of the "back-up" label. I still own and could have used an Ampeg classic tube head and 810 set up, but never doubted this amp.

Great little amp. I was surprised at the tone and quality. Extremely portable. I ran it through an Ampeg 4x10 HLF cabinet using a Warwick Thumb N/T. The sound was impressive.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB200 200W Ultra Light Bass Amp Head:

I own an Ampeg Classic tube amp and go through the Ampeg 810 fridge or a 410 HLF. Like many others who discovered the GK MB series, I was looking for alternatives to the cumbersome amps and cabinets. I decided since I was "experimenting" with the Class "D" amps I would start with the least expensive GK amp. For over 30 years I've only played Ampeg or GK. I also purchases a GK NEO 1x15. Sorry to say my Ampeg set-up is no longer needed. Not to say I wouldn't use it in a stadium, but with the purchase of one more GK Neo 1x15 daisy chained, I get all the punch I'll ever need out of this flyweight MMA fighter. I appreciate the Spartan useable controls as well as the fact that they actually make a desired difference when used. Too many amps out there have 11 knobs and one tone. A flip of the contour to *on* and I get great slap tones, flip it off and there's the GK midrange growl I love without changing the tone controls. I circumvented the issue of it vibrating off by looping a large (rubber band?) through the handle of the cabinet and around the amp. I actually get butterflies again when I'm gigging and get to use this set-up. With the two Neo 1x15's it changes to the 4 ohm power and sounds absolutely amazing. BTW this is the first time I've ever used 15's, and I see why they have always had a place, but that's another review. Thank you Gallien Krueger!!

This is a great amp for a backup or for practice. The controls are limited -- no master volume (just gain), no compression, but it does have the basic EQ. The tone is good. If you connect it to two cabinets (or, I assume, something like a 4-ohm 4x10) it can get plenty loud. It is perfect to take a long as a backup in case your main amp falters. Also, anyone considering a small to medium sized combo amp for gigs should consider this head. It will give you options by pairing it with different cabinets. Apparently some of them have had noise issues but mine is totally quiet.

Got this to reluctantly replace my old GK 400RB which has been my backup amp for years and is great for small venues and practice. The much lighter MB200 also has headphone out and an auxiliary input which came in handy to plug in my sansamp bass driver directly and bypass all the tone and volume controls. Great feature! This gave great output. I found the GK tone controls a little boomy by themselves, but use my Sansamp most of the time anyway so bypassing all the volume and tone and using this like a micro slave amp was a huge plus. I push it through my practice cabinet too which is an Eden EX112. Great punchy tone!
