Can't find a reason to give this anything short of a "10". Even with occasional issues involving the drivers losing compression and punch and blowing "farts" as stated by other users and the inherent weakness of the cheap tweeter that GK uses in these combos, their customer service department is so responsive to their consumers that you'd be hard pressed to think you are on your own if any issue arises.
WOW! I was skeptical at first that any combo amp under 40lbs could provide the thrust and punch that I needed to power my keyboards and LH bass parts, after lugging around amps twice that heavy to gigs and rehearsals. Even the sharp appearance--with the aluminum square-grid gril and 30" tall presence--didn't justify the purchase. BUT when I powered up and started cranking out thick, boom-filled sounds at about 20% volume, I was sold. This amp is everything that GK would like you to believe--AND MORE!! Even with multiple parts running into the amp's input (high notes, chords AND low bass notes) there was no distortion, no compromising of any of the sounds. All sounds were reproduced clearly and accurately. At gigs, I am "all the way"up to 4 on the volume knob and still no decrease in clarity and quality. Then, at the end of the night, what a joy it is to be able to hoist one keyboard in its strap-bag over my shoulder, carry the MB212 in one hand and my bag of cables, etc in the other, and call it a night!

There is absolutely no better value for the money in the bass (and keyboard) amp line than this guy. You will not be disappointed! And GK's customer service department is unparalleled.
Nothing better that I've used in 40 years of performing (and that includes Yorkville, Fender, Traynor, Peavey, Crate, Carvin........... you name it).
At retail--compared with Eden and other boutique bass amps--it's a great deal. As a meat-and-potatoes amp though, the price could be lower.

I was excited about this amp's possibilities after reading the specs., etc. The first MB212 I got I played an outdoor gig where it gave off random loud "POPS" and "CRACKS" throughout the night which made ME look bad and basically ruined the show. Bandmates were not happy. Trying four different cables and another bass made no difference -- it was the amp. I sent that one back to Musician's Friend and got another one because I really wanted one that worked. I played another outdoor gig with the new one. The second MB212 had the same "CRACKS" as well as random volume fluctuations and a loud distortion "rattle" on lower notes. This was in front of hundreds of people and was extremely embarrassing. Bandmates very unhappy. I never pushed either amp, with gain at 10 o'clock and master volume at 3 o'clock -- that master volume setting is what the G-K manual recommends. I would love to have this amp but I am not willing to have that poor quality and embarrassment again. So I give up, I am sending the second one back, and I am getting my money back.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I have had a very strange course of events to get to the point of buying this GK bass amp. I originally bought the MB115 GK bass amp. I really loved this amp, but ran into a problem with 3 MB115 GK amps. The horn/tweeter went bad on each one after using each for a short period. I first thought that I must have been doing something way wrong to have this problem. Musicians Friend has been wonderful throughout my whole experience with the MB115s. They made me a fantastic trade in offer for this amp, (GK MB212). I have only had this amp for about a week, but have not had any problems with the tweeter or the amp in general. I have recently gotten an American made Fender Precision 2004 4-string model, and this combo is the best I have ever heard in my entire 35 plus years of playing bass. Right now, I am in bass amp heaven with this big daddy. 33 years ago, I owned the Ampeg SVT all tube 300 watt amp with the special ALtec 10" speakers. I had a 1977 American made 4-string Fender Jazz Bass that was played through the Ampeg rig. This was the best sounding combo amp & bass guitar I had ever had the privledge to hear. The GK MB212 comes about as close as I have gotten to bass guitar paradise. I still have to rate the Ampeg rig slightly higher, but not very much!

I Love This Amp

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

While visiting the GK factory earlier this year,I played through every amp they make. The MB212 stood out like a sore thumb. Big sound, great tone, lots of power and very light weight. I picked up the cabinet and it felt empty!I've been playing in honky tonks, skull orchards, and dive bars for 46 years. This amp saved my back and it works with my 5 string. It's my third GK rig. They make great gear and their customer service is the best.

Great amp (if you get a good one)

By Mark Crowley

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

Great for gigging because of the power and weight. That, combined with the price, has made it a worthwhile replacement my old full stack, which got stolen. It doesn't sound fantastic, but you sure look smart walking into a show with a light, powerful amp.
Lots of power, incredibly light weight, and solid sound. A bass with a wide tonal range and very hot active pickups can be too much for this amp, but a passive or cheap active bass still sounds great out of it. The vintage-sounding midrange of this amp is its best tonal quality.
Like many other people. I had to send back the first MB212 I ordered because the back of the cabinet continued to rattle.

Great Combo Amp!!!

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I've had this amp for about 9 months now and have been actively giging with it during that time. I use a Fender MIM P-bass with a MXR 10 band EQ pedal with this amp and I couldn't be happier. First off, if you're looking for a warm, fat, tube tone, you will not get it with this amp. But, you will get a solid low end suitable for pretty much any venue. At smaller venues I generally do not use the the on-board direct output. It's plenty loud. I run the gain at half and the master volume at 1/4. For larger venues, I use the direct output into the the house PA. It still sounds great through a PA. I love the light weight compact design. It's hard to believe that something this small and light will move that much air. It does drop off on the higher notes though. That's why I use the MXR EQ with it. It is a little steep on the price tag but I didn't mind that so much. This is however the second amp I got. The first one developed a rattle in the back of the amp and screws started to come loose. This happened only after about 2 months of playing. However this one has not shown any signs of wear and tear and has made a few trips in the band trailer. I recommend this amp. It is a great combo amp. If you're looking for something that will fill a room/bar and still sound good through a PA and doesn't weigh a ton, this is for you. But as always, tone is important to any musician. Shop around your local music stores before deciding on a particular product.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I've been very pleased with this unit. Yes, I'm a bit nervous about how it might hold up over time, but it's been 1-1/2 years now and over 150 gigs, and no problems. The sound is very mellow, and can rumble a room at a third volume. The light weight is a real plus when loading. The knobs have a tendency to pull off easily, but I've pretty much made my own hand adjustments to fix that. All in all, nary a single real problem/issue with it, and the tonal quality is top shelf.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I have played guitar for 22 years. Metal, Rock, Country, Jazz etc... I have played bass for 14 year in the same genres. Every time I have ever tried a bass amp, I have set the EQ and all knobs to flat to ascertain the feel of the amp. This is the first amp I have ever set flat and witnessed perfect tone without manipulation. GK "got it right" with this combo. If you like Justin Chancellor tone...you got it! Victor Wooten....it's there! Flea, Tim Commerford, etc. This combo buries the tone, and volume clarity I had with my Ampeg, Hartke, and SWR stacks I've had in the past. I am now GK from now on! I highly recommend to all levels of players.

I love GK bass gear. This is a dream come true. When the Mark Bass stuff came out I was so mad that GK didn't make a load light amp. now they do. To date, I have only play three gigs with it. A small room-worked great. A large Hall-worked great. (My guitar play had to ask me to cut down. I was on three.) and an outdoor show-once again, worked great. if you are a bass player-buy this rig now!

Third MB212 May be the charm BUT:

    By Hofner/Kramer

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

My MB 212 sounded gr8 right out of the box, but after two gigs, certain notes from the low C on down would cause the cabinet to rattle hideously. Almost sounded like a blown speaker, but only on those frequencies. And it got worse with every gig to the point where it was unlistenable and useless to me. I had to borrow an amp to continue gigging 4X/week.By this time, of course,it was too late to send send it back to Musicians Friend as the month's return policy expired. MF provided me with a phone number where I could use the "Gold Coverage" repair I also bought.) I was not, however, interested in a repair. (My drummer held his hand against the rear of the cabinet and the rattling stopped. But I cannot afford to hire someone to stand back there and do that!) I then turned to G-K, and they gladly accepted the amp back and paid the shipping as well. They sent me a replacement MB 212, but lo and behold, that one had electrical problems and would not power up first time out of the box. I received a profuse apology, and will be receiving my third unit this week. Is the third time the charm? We'll see. I must confess though, my hopes are not too high. Great service from G-K though.

This is a great amp! The only problem is the horn gives a feedback, but it doesn't make much of a sound difference and you can turn it off. I bought it used and the guy used it for like 2 gigs and some practices. When I got the amp the was not rattling and bad sounds that many people said. I also read many reviews for this amp, and I was scared because of the bad reviews. I looked online and making the rattling stop is an easy fix, but I'm not having that problem. Don't miss out on this amp! With the power and tone, it's worth buying. Best investment ever!

    Great sound, great value

    By Scott Strauss

    from Minneapolis

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

I'm getting up there in years and have been looking for an amp that would be powerful enough for practices and gigs, light enough to move without breaking my back, and at a price that wouldn't strain my budget -- all without sacrificing sound quality. I think I have found it all in the MB212 Ultralight. I'm able to get a great sound (I play a Music Man Bongo, also purchased from Musician's Friend) and have no trouble with volume. I would highly recommend purchasing a tiltback amp stand too. Musican's Friend has been my main source for gear over that past 5 years -- all my orders have shipped promptly and the free shipping has never taken more than 4 days.
I don't notice much, if any difference with the horn switch on, but this does not diminish the overall quality. The controls are not easy to get to, but on the other hand they're not prone to damage in transport. It's every bit as easy to move as I hoped for.
I've been able to get just about any sound I'm looking for.
    Excellent amp for the price.

I have been waiting for this product for a long time. My only wish before I bought it was the the tone was going to be adequate, if it met that standard I would have been happy. I just got done putting it through its paces, and it sounds great! It does exceed my expectations, although GK always does that. There is no compromise on tone at all with this amp! On board compression and everything! Now, when I play live, I will run through a tuner and that's it. Set up will take 2 minutes, and I can carry the entire rig by myself with one trip. I have added ten years to my career by buying this product and I sound as good as ever. Thank you GK!!!!!!!!!!!

I play in a classic rock power trio in small to medium size clubs. I have been using either a 500 watt 1 15 Trace Eliot combo or a 400 watt 1 15 Traynor combo. I used the GK mb212 with my 77 4001 Rickenbacker for the first time last night. So the test was the bottom end. The volume and tone were superb. This amp packs plenty of punch. It performed as good OR BETTER than the Trace and Traynor, and my back loves the light weight. This GK will become my go to amp.

Comments about Gallien-Krueger MB212 2x12 500W Ultralight Bass Combo Amp:

The GK MB212 was purchased to replace an old Ampeg B3-1508. The MB212 has plenty enough power to fill a moderately sized room, and the tones I can dial in sound great when playing loud or soft. And it weighs under 39 lbs., so it's easy to move around. My only minor complaint is that the HF horn has no volume attenuator - it's either on or off. When it's on, it adds too much high end and its produces a slight hiss. A volume control on the horn would be beneficial. But, even with the horn off, the system produces plenty of high end by dialing it in from the equalizer controls on the amp and the bass. As a bass player of over 35 years, I would recommend this amp.

Got sent a bad amp with a bad voice coil I think. Upgraded to a rb1001 without much trouble. This unit looked nice enough but reminded me more of a toy than a bass amp capable of multiple years of gigging. In fairness I can only review the bad one and not a properly functioning unit. I decided to go a more traditional route with a seperate head and cabinet. (Neo 212 II)

I give it a 9, because no product is truly perfect. This is a 39lb combo with loads of tone and headroom. What's not to like?
I use this amp on all of my gigs, and I have nothing but good things to say about this. I toured the US and Europe using a GK2001 RB with a GK 412 cab, so when I started doing smaller venues, I thought I'd miss that punch, but I don't. I have a 75 Fender Jazz reissue with an audere pre, a Warwick LX5 Broad neck, and a Fender P, but my main bass is a Roscoe 5, and all 4 sound great through this amp. If you're a slapper or solo in the higher registers, then the horn will be a huge asset to you. With the horn engaged, you'll get the cripest of highs. I've yet to max the gain and volume on this amp. I don't have to. she holds her own with room to spare. Although they're both great products, I'd recommend the MB212 over the MB210.
So far, VERY durable and very well constructed.
        Great amp for the price.

My band mates were blown away, as was I! People come up to me after shows and ask me what I'm using. When people feel the light weight of the amp, they can't believe it! I love GK! I really can't understand why my first two were duds because I have never had a problem with GK before. I would definitely recommend this bass amp. GK's customer service is the best!!!
