Alright....I decided after hearing this in the music store I work in for sevearl months...that I had to get one. First...this amp has an enormous ability to generate a huge array of tones...so be patient when you are trying to find yours. The first thing I did when I got it home was disassemble the amp and start switching preamp tubes to find the voicing I wanted. THIS IS CRITICAL in ANY amp. I am amazed by how many people do not realize how drastic the difference is in the tones of different tubes from different manufacturers. Anyway...I ended up with a final combination of....JJ in v1, hg+RUBY in v2, and hg+JJ in v3. I get a warm fenderish tone in the clean channel, and on the high gain I get a brutally vicious wall of ultra heavy saturation. ON A SIDE NOTE: I use an Ibanez Thermion for my rhythm distortion. The speakers I am using are 2-Celestion V30's and 2-Tone Tubby's w/ceramic magnets. The speakers you use make an ENORMOUS difference in tone. Play with your speaker arrangement to tailor your sound even further. Anyone who has said that the amp cannot get some certain tone, has not really tweaked the amp. The tone is in there. Finding it is a boat load of crapola though. It took me a FULL 2 days to finally nail my sound down. I tried the settings in the back of the manual and I personally thought they were all crap. So...my point is, turn the freakin knobs...set them in ways that you wouldn't think will get good tones, you will be surprised at what you end up finding hidden in there. ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: During my tweaking session I was able to do an excellent peavey 5150 saturation, a nice fat Mesa Recto crunch, a sparkling fender clean, a vintage marshall clean, and a vintage Santana tone, just to name a few. None of which I was looking for, but just in case you were interested in some of the tones I has been proven to be capable of doing. Also, since I have had the amp apart, I may as well pass on that it is a high quality build. Very study, very cleanly laid out inside, and I didn't notice any cheap components. Now all I need is a switchbone and I am ready for the next show.

I played this amplifier recently at a big show I was playing with my band. The amplifiers at the show were supplied so I didnt have a choice, though the sound of the dollar amp sounded awsome. The amps were terrible, they had no tone what so ever, ther really is no features on them except reverb, I suppose the 50/100 watt setting is cool. But all in all the amp was complete garbage not worth even a fourth of the list price. matter of fact my fender roc pro 1000 had 8 million times the tone hands down. If you want a good metal amp then try a krank, or a peavey xxx.

Impressive

By BirthofaMichael

I'm very young musician, I used this amp for the first time when I first got into the band I'm currently in, It was the drummers dad's amp. I played it for the first time and was amazed. The clarity was like the best I've ever heard. The high gain channel was great. I loved everything about it. So I bought one. I don't even play with new amps anymore, I am 100% satisfied with the Genz Benz, I play it on the Genz Benz G-Flex 412 Cabinet, sounds great. Definitely a great buy, price not too band either compared to some tube amps.

OK, I recently bought this amp. And it really is amazing. I've played through a lot of amps. And this is certainly my favorite. It's just amazing. You have to try one out. Or buy one. You won't regret it. The Genz-Benz el diablo really is something.

Own it and you'll appreciate it

The Genz Benz El Diablo 100 Head is probably the most versatile, best built head in its class. My amp tech has his own line of boutique amps, and he couldn't think of anything to change on this one after digging around in it. Separate EQs, a great stock footswitch, huge wet long-pan reverb (nothing cheap here), from sparkling deep cleans to bone-crunching metal. Need to cut through on your solo? Stomp on the Attack boost - a super-clever proprietary design that is no gimmick. The EL34 BSTR power tubes that come stock have rapidly been recognized as the top production EL34s out there. The first preamp tube was specifically designed to give palm-mutes extra bite. I just can't argue with anything GB did here. Finding the right tone for each guitar takes some work, but not too much, and it's worth it. That comes with the territory when you have a flexible, eminently adjustable amp. This is not an amp that can be appreciated in a store with one guitar. An owner will appreciate its capability to be tweaked to perfectly handle any guitar thrown at it. I paired it to the GFlex 2X12 Cab, which is Thiele-tuned (tuned front ports). GB designed the head to go specifically with this cab, and it's a natural pairing if you really want to understand the tonal nirvana GB created here.

I've owned this amp for almost a year, where do I begin. The tone is awesome! I'm currently using a cab with vintage 30's in it, bring the lows up. EQ with compensate for that. I'm one of three guitarist in my band and running at the 50 watt setting with my distortion volume around 9:00 and the master 9:00, I'm about even with the 2 other guitarist, the bass and drums without drowning them out. I wish it had midi in/out/thru, but there is a way to set-up an outboard effects unit by using a cable wired a certain way (call the company for the info). All in all, a killer amp that will not set you back too much $$$

Simply Amazing

By AREA13

from Santa Maria, CA

The Genz-Benz el Diablo 100 is simply the most amazing amp I have played through. It covers a lot of ground but shines the best as a high gain amp; very Mesa Recto sounding. The cleans are incredible as well; from very warm to pumped. With three FXs loops (one for clean, one for dirty and one global), there is a tremendous amount of versatility in the amp. I bought this amp on a Thursday and had it tracking in the studio by the following Monday. I was able to dial in everything I needed within a couple of hours of owning the amp. No amp does it all but this amp comes pretty close. If you're looking for a high gain amp with exceptional cleans, check this one out. I play through Vintage 30's and totally love the tone.

I was after a Hughes and Kettner Triamp MK II, but the guy on the phone recomended this amp because of its sound, reverb and cost. When I played on this amp at the store it was plugged into the G-Flex cabinet and it sounded great, but actually sounded way better through a friends Marshall MG cabinet. This amp has that loud, thick, in your face Marshall sound. It's also really versatile with the 6l6/EL34 and 50/100W switches on it. This amp caters to just about anybody's musical style.

Tube Screamer

By Blackdog

from The Mountains of Colorado

I have the ElDiablo 100 Combo which has the same head but in a 2X12. This amp was what I was looking for to bring out the sound of my guitar. It looks cool with the blue diode lights too. I have had a few others like the Johnson Mil. and the Vox AD120VT. They both had some good qualities but my guitar sound kept getting lost in the mix. The Genz gives true guitar sounds without all the muck. This amp can make your ears ring if you get carried away with the volume in your house. The amp goes well with my JS Ibanez. Taking the removable casters off and placing it on the floor ads more low end punch. It looks like good quality and it is heavy. I would recommend this amp and it will probably be the last one I will buy.

el diablo

By Sotare

I was really quite impressed with this amp. I've been playing a peavey 5150 for a lot of years, and I was in the market for a set of new cabs when a friend suggested this amp. A bit skeptical, I plugged it in and played the clean channel and was blown away by the clarity. You could hear all the individual tones and each string was crystal clear. The gain channel was equally clear. Not quite as much crunch as the 5150, but the clarity is unmatched in anything I have played. If you are a major tone freak, this amp will save the tone of your guitar, not necessarily bring it out. But again, everything is crystal clear.

Great Amp

By Hoeke

from Michigan

I own the 60 Watt Tribal Series El Diablo Head, with the same features as the 100 Watt. I love it. The Cleans are bright and chimey and the dirtys go from slight to full out nu metal gains. I am running it through a Vintage 30 2x12 Cab. I use it in the studio primarily along with an Orange AD30TC Head. This amp stands right up to the Orange, and defeats it in versatility. The controls a tough to dial in, but once you are used to them, its fantastic. I love it, and at this price range, you cannot go wrong. I have played a 100 head several times, and it has the same versatility and tones, just too loud for the studio in my opinion. Great Deal, Great Amp

Unimpressive

By Jeremie

from Dirrty, Jersey

I used this amp with my band for a battle of the bands competition in NY, the amps were supplied, and after hearing such good things about Genz-Benz heads, I was unimpressed with the sound from this head. First off, its much too thick. As a strat player, I'm always looking for a thicker sound but this was way too much. Even playing with the EQ for about 10 minutes, I couldn't get anything that even remotely matched my JTM600. This amps gain doesn't have that punchy tight sound I needed, it was loose and grainy.

If you are considering a new amp, this is the one!

By schpiel

from Savannah,Ga

I play in a metal band that gigs quite frequently, I was using a 2004 Crate Blue Voodoo. The amp sounded great, but not for the particular style of music we played. So I was in search of a new amp. I had considered many of the huge brand amps and actually tried out all of them. Then my dad turned me on to the Genz Benz El Diablo, after hearing about one from his friend. I went to the music store and tried it out. I was sold! The tone from this amp is amazing! It can go from the scooped tone found on "And Justice for All" (a tone that my band favors), to a sparkling clean tone. I have not heard a guitar tone that I cannot match with this amp. Absolutely amazing piece of equipment!

El Diablo is perfect match for Damien

By Damien-v4b65

This amp f***ing rocks! I just got quite a bit of money from college and am only two weeks from owning this amp. I went and played it at a local music shop and even wihout my preferred effects pedal, it was amazing. The G-flex cab sounds amazing along with it(I highly recommend thier unity). You can't get any better sound for the money as far as I'm concerned and it looks so much edgier than a marshall or something. The blue lights are hypnotizing...I know it's a pricy amp but if you stumble across about 2 grand, pick yourself up one of these. Last amp I'll ever own...I swear it. Plus the fact that my name matched so well to the amp name was too much of a coincidence for me. HAHAHA

This amp is one of the best. I've been able to play almost everything you could thing of. Over all you should get it. The best part about this amp is that it is made in the U.S. One other thing its louder than hell.

This is a great amp for almost anybody. I used it session for a little while and decided it was good enough to use with my band and hauled it on the road with us. Its NOT going to blow other amps out of the water but for a pure sound this is it. It won't cut it for a killer lead or tone freaks but for a general use everyday amp for anybody this will reign supreme...if you need real tone or a specific tone... dont even look at this it wont give you that.

genz benz el diablo

By Bri

from seattle

This amp has an amazing clean that is unique and is very crisp. BUT, the distortion on the other hand needs some work. The distortion is way to crunchy and out of control. I guess somepeople like that but for myself I like a more distilled sound like the peavy 5150/6505. I owned this amp for half a year and got sick of it because I couldn't get an absolute tight sound out of it. There is a weird overtone in the distortion that annoy's me. To understand what im talking about. get a guitar in drop c or b and bend the e string up and you'll know what I'm talking about. The reverb tank also kept cutting out on me.

The Diablo Strikes Back

By Gibson03

from Rogers, AR

See all my reviews

Last year I purchased an El Diablo with a g-flex cab and since have been amazed at the purity of the sound the combo creates. I also purchased a Gibson Les Paul Custom with BurstBuckers and the sound is incomparable to any other amp. It's also proven it's versatility with warm and hot channels that give warm SRV blues tones all the way to Pantera distortion. It's that deep distortion thet you can feel when you palm mute. This head, once it has warmed up, cooks out a sound that can only be recreated with a tube screamer and a set of Texas specials. Whatever kind of sound you are looking for this head can produce it.
