A highly advanced classic amp.

The Hughes & Kettner Dual EL84 is the right guitar combo amp for you if you want uncompromising tone at moderate, club-approved volume. The STM combo delivers all the fundamentals in a remarkably portable amplifier package.

Beauty and the Beast

Sinfully sweet American clean with a touch of hillbilly twang and rough-and-ready British rock in all its raging glory in one amp? They said it couldn't be done; the sonic divide was simply too wide. They said if you want both worlds of tone and are unwilling to settle for less, you would have to take 2 amps to the stage. They said the warm airy tone of an open back combo and the fat, focused power of a 4 x 12 rock rig were incompatible. And they said this wish, long harbored by players seeking a more versatile rig, would forever remain unfulfilled.

German Attention To Detail

What makes the various breeds of vintage amps shine is the trademark tone produced by a particular design. Hughes & Kettner set out to conjure the sonic magic of gratifying tone, albeit in versatile amps. For 25 years, Hughes & Kettner engineers have made it their mission to decode the DNA of the most diverse guitar sounds, analyzing everything from input jacks to the architecture of housings. Armed with this insight, inspired by tradition, and driven by the desire to create something fresh and exciting for forward-looking players, they turned up a string of celebrated sound-sculpting implements, including the TubeTools line and the TriAmp. Now all the knowledge gathered along the way birthed an unprecedented amp design. At its heart is circuitry that stretches the boundaries of tube technology: Switching from Clean to Drive restructures the preamp circuits completely. What's more, current feedback is also switched, tailoring the power amp's characteristics to suit the given preamp channel. The Statesman's housing translates this revolutionary tube technology into sound pressure. It's a classic case of applied physics culminating in art: This housing, in combination with the Eminence speaker custom-designed for the Statesman, delivers both authentic combo and stack tone.
By employing cutting-edge engineering and wedding it to classic tube craft to create today's most advanced classic amp design, Statesman stands as a testament to Hughes & Kettner's Technology of Tone.

Total Tonal Freedom!

The elegant Statesman's many custom features make it a boutique instrument. Dedicated Reverb Balance knobs match the built-in Accutronics reverb to each channel. A push of the Clean channel Twang button takes you from the sound that sparked the British Invasion to star-spangled California clean. The Drive channel's Boost button sweeps from the throaty rasp of the early rock 'n' roll years to the raging rock of the high-octane‚ '80s and beyond. The EL34 head and 6L6 combo's Drive channel even offers a second, separately adjustable Master. A simple twist of the wrist is all it takes to push your leads up front and center! Classic sound paired with modern-day versatility - this symbiosis is what makes the Statesman such a class act. Discover Statesman and discover what it means to make chicken-skin music!

This amp is your palette; plug in and paint bold, beautiful sonic images. Every tonal hue from crisp, crystal-clear clean to foot-stompin' twang, and from smoky blues to blazing rock, is at your fingertips! Every nuance of every stroke is yours to control intuitively with your guitar, style, and personality. Fantastic Combo

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Series STM Dual EL84 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Great amp. I have been a Fender guy for years but recently decided to do an upgrade. I got this amp after i saw a used one on here for a good price. I used it tonight at band rehearsal and really cranked it up for the first time. I gotta say it sounds stellar. the clean is the highlight, the twang is great, the reverb is also quite good. I heard bad things about the reverb, but it's just different from the Fender springy stuff, but it's just as good...just different. i really enjoy it. the lead channel is great too and the boost is nice. te eq for both channels works fine. is it loud? yes. it kept up with bass an drums easily and has a great tone and cut through the mix beautifully. i have one gripe and it;s a common issue with tube amps that i don't think i'll get used to rattle. while not terribly loud, it bugged me every now and then. i may try some dampers on the tubes and keep some spares around in case it gets bad. it's a tube thing...not an amp thing from what i understand, so i can't fault the amp here. i can't recommend this thing enough if your like everyone these days and your shopping the 15-30 or even 40 watt combos you can use at home, record with, practice, and gig with. i'd gig it anywhere and i would definitely record it all day long. i looked at orange, peavey classics, mesas, fender, and the usual suspects but i can honestly say i have no buyer's remorse and i love my choice. h&k is a wonderful company and built a champ of an amp here.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Series STM Dual EL84 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is handmade in Germany. I have a PRS Custom 22.A key thing is that it sounds great the moment you turn it on. The clean channel becomes more of a crunch channel at higher volumes but at a little over half way with a single coil she SINGS! The humbucker at lower volumes also sounds great. Its warm, huge and TUBE sounding - sounds great with picking and chiming riffs! The distorted channel is hard to dial in simply because it all sounds good, so i cant decide what to turn the EQ to! Plenty of gain, IMO sounds best with gain about half way and master a little bit over half way. Beautiful warm Plexi/Vox AC30 mix sounding distortion. BTW its plenty loud enough for bedroom, band practise and gigs. Not suitable for metal i dont think but can cover many genres of music. Classic Rock definitely! Has a good (not outstanding but great for my use anyway) reverb and a fab boost button (footswitchable) which adds gain for solos! Breathtaking amp!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Series STM Dual EL84 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

i have a lot of tube amps. Combo, stacks, mini-stacks you name it I have em. My problem has always been versatility. I have stacks that oooze tone but they are hard to lug around from gig to gig. i have combos and mini stacks that have are single channel and you are contstantly dialing in sounds. I needed simplicity - and that's the Statesman Dual EL34.I get nice cleans - the twang button is a nice option and gives that that fender-ish tones I like. The gain channel covers all my needs - no need for overdrive pedals here! Turning the volume up and the gain down give you the tube saturated crunch sound that you dream about. Warm, creamy gains are coaxed out with the simple turn of the gain knob. Crank the volume up on this amp, close your eyes and you swear you were hearing a stack! this thing sounds huge! It's so damn hard to put down the guitar when you are plugged into this amp!It would have scored a 5 in features if the clean and gain channels had their own eq - but by no means this is NOT a reason to buy this amp!If you are looking in this price range check this one out, and compare it others such as Peavey Classic 50 or an Orange Tiny Terror Combo. Then you will truly appreciate what Hughes and Kettner has built here!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner Statesman Series STM Dual EL84 20W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Well, I just wrote a long review that got erased when I hit the preview button, so I will keep this second attempt short.

This is a really great versatile amp at a very reasonable price. It comes with a quality cover, a footswitch, and very good TAD tubes. These items alone will cost you a lot for most amps that don't have these included features.

Beyond that, the amp has a really nice warm clean channel with a versatile twang button that adds a Fendery flavor. I tend to spend most of my time on the OD channel which is awesome! From light break up to screaming distortion, it does it all! It has way more gain than I was expecting from other reviews, and sounds excellent with the gain all the way up, and boost engaged. The boost is kind of like having a tube screamer in front of the amp.

A couple other really nice features are that the tubes are actually mounted facing up. This allows all of the heat they produce to flow up and away from the amp chassis and tube sockets. Also, the tubes are easily biased as external test points are included on the back of the amp. Be sure to check the bias per the manual as mine was way off. There is also a hum reducing adjustment which really works well.

Anyway, this is a top quality amp that sounds and looks amazing. For the price you can't beat it.
