I've enjoyed playing on my Roland VGA-7 modeling amp for 5 years. I wanted to get an all tube amp, but still have programability and some basic effects. The Switchblade does it all. The clear channnel sounds just like a Fender Twin Reverb, but has the added Gain control to overdrive it at any volume. I haven't used the Crunch channel much yet (still learning). The Lead channel sounds just like a Marshall stack (tube of course), and with the Ultra Channnel I can get an EVH Brown sound easily. The effects are excellent. You will need to spend alot of time making settings and writing them into the 128 presets. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have off/on foot switches for those effects because you must program in any off on stuff into the presets. My Roland VGA unit has foot switchable effects (a dam fine amp for sure, but still not the tube monster that the H & K is). This amp has incredible power. I've yet to have the master volume past 2 (the 9 0'clock position) and the house still shakes. The more I play with it and learn how to get different sounds the more I like it. Not cheap, but very similar to another German engineered product--the BMW car--Super great quality, in this case with awesome sounds--the ultimate amp experience!

Great variety of sound choices available- ability to store every sound you could need.
very concerned here- i had a switchblade 50 fail within the first hour of playing it. I purchased the 100 watt combo simply because i love the tones this amp provides, but from reading some other reviews here and elswhere, I'm starting to think this is an extremely unreliable amp. In addition, I'm frustrated to see when I registered this amp that the manufacture date is 2007. This means Musician's friend sold me a new amp thats 5 years old. I have concerns about this being a factormin why the other amp failed, but who knows...
No concerns here- the amp delivers for the price.

Has been in shop 2 times since December 2010. It takes to long to get it back from repair. Thank GHod for the extended warranty, however it is not worth the inconvenience.

My Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 100 sounded amazing when I got it home. Unfortunately, the amp failed after about 45 hours. And, of course, the warrantee was expired. In short, it took 15 months (& $147) to get this amp up and running again. Purchase the additional warrantee for your own peace of mind.

If you've tried modeling amps and been disappointed with the sound and response, you'll want to definitely check out the Switchblade. This is a true tube amp with some of the best sounding digital effects you'll find. The crunch and lead sounds are nothing short of amazing. The clean sounds are very good as well.As some users have reported, the footswitch can be problematic. The reason most often is the cord used to connect it to the amp. The wire used is of extremely fragile gauge and severaly bending or stepping on the cord is not recommended. The footswitch itself is rugged and uses heavy duty switches which should last a long time. I'm considering replacing the attached footswitch cord with a midi jack on the pedal to allow for plugging in a standard midi cable. All in all, you'll definitely be able to find the sounds you're looking for in this amp.

This is my second Hughes and Kettner amp. I LOVED my triamp. I've had my Switchblade combo for just over two years and I've had nothing but trouble with it. I'm on my third foot-switch and now the amp has completely stopped working. An amp that cost this much should last longer than 2 years.

This amp is totally sweet. When you get it you'll think you have four amps in one - wrong. It's many more. For instance on the Clean channel you can easily dial in an incredibly open crunch tone, on the Crunch you can get a great clean sound by just rolling back your guitar's volume, the Ultra channel is thick and creamy and but by scooping the mids all the way down then pushing the bass and treble up it's a Metal Monster. The Lead channel is a soloist's dream not only because of it's sustain but it's gain structure is designed to be louder than the other channels giving you that "second master" type sound that H&K is famous for. The programability helps me is because I don't have to change tone settings when I change from my tele to a LP. I have a bank setup for each of one of my guitars: Fenders, Hamers and Zions with humbucker, singles or P90s. The only knob I change is the master volume to suite my stage. The only thing I wish for is a power soak of some kind because this baby is very LOUD. I also experimented with opening the back so the bass wasn't so focussed. For my applications it's a perfect amp and for someone who needs lots of different tones and effects at the flick of a switch.

I love the fact that I can plug into this amp & get crunch & OD tones I could never get w/ any other amp I've ever owned. The only OB effects I use now are an MXR comp & a BBE clean boost both for my clean & light crunch sounds. There is a bit of a warble in the chorus/flange effects at times but not enough to be a nuisance. The stage board is heavy duty w/ a super long cord but I use my Roland MFC 1 to cut down on the "dancing". A player that doesn't do a lot of patch changes would be very happy w/ the SB. After reading the manual, patch setup was a snap. There is a considerable difference in gain from clean to ultra. This amp is LOUD. The std patches will take your head off, but the amp also sounds great w/ the Master set low. I was looking and about to buy a Matchless combo when I got a chance to play the 50W version. Sparkly highs & tight, fat bottom end from a 212 combo...what's not to like?

I have bought and sold amps, effects, you name it, constantly looking for equipment that would assist me in my quest to create a wonderful tone throughout many different songs. Lets face it, plugging directly into an amp for most of us without effects for its pure form is a true desire, but if you want your songs or your cover songs to sound different and original, you need some spice in your chain. And the SwitchBlade is one incredable machine. This Amp has hands down the best sounding effects I've ever heard. Nothing sounds sterile, never muddle. The pre-set factory effects are wonderful and sometimes amaze the heck out of me. I can't put my guitar down. Playing this amp is more than fun, its exciting. I'm selling all my other amps, just so I can buy the 50 watt 1x12 SwitchBlade for practice, so I can save my 100 watt 2x12's for gig's. By the way, I can play my SwitchBlade at midnight in my music room, and not bother anyone. Even at super low volumes, this amp sounds amazing.......

Been playing my ''just delivered'' Hughes & Kettner Switchblade for 8 straight hours! Discovery is half the fun! Fat tube sound w/on-board effects! You can make it sound like the cleanest, twangy Fender amp, to the raunchiest Marshall Plexi, HiWatt, Vox ... ANYTHING! Incredible sounds! A little pricey, but not even close to the cost of a ''boutique'' amp - and sounds better! A great value! German engineering folks! This amp has a closed back and is L-O-U-D!! Turn the Master volume to about 2 or 3, and your ears may bleed! This amp can also accommodate an additional 2x12'' or 4x12'' extension speaker cabinet!!Only downsides are: 1) A small learning curve, but anyone will get it in no time! 2) Plastic corner protectors, and THE WORST ... 3) NO COVER available!!
