Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Over the past 5 years I've owned the Blackheart Little Giant (5W); The Backstar HT-5 1x12 Combo; a Backstair ID30; an Egnator Tweaker 1x12; both the Jet City 50W head and the JCA 20H; the Yamaha THR10; a Orange Micro-Terror; an Orange OR15H and of course my golden God of an amp, a 1978 Marshall JMP50. I still own the OR15H, the Yamaha and my Marshall. The rest are gone because none of the low wattage amps in this list have lived up to the marketing of "big tube tone in a small package." Until I found the H&K Tubemeister 5W head. This thing kicks major butt. The Cleans are the warmest I've every played. Combined with a Tele on the neck pickup... so smooth. Neck pick on my Les Paul - like warm butter. Just fantastic. The gain channel at low volume is absolutely awesome for solo basement licks and power chords. Turned up, this bad boy has more than enough volume to keep up at a jam or be heard on stage. I've been there, done it. The gain channel is sometimes a little dry for me but if you push it with a Boss Overdrive or a Tube Screamer, the harmonics and texture just explode out of this thing. Just a great little amp. Everything Blackstar wishes their 5W amp was. For the record I found the HT-5 to be very vanilla and solid state feeling. No tube feel there at all. The Tweaker was just way, way to dark for me. Muddy. The Tubemeister is sort of half way between the OR15 and the Marshall sonically. I run it through a Greenback filled Marshall 4x12.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought the tubemiester 5 and was very unimpressed with the tone on the gain. It was gutless. the amp was also very bright. Try the peavey 20 watt valveking II. it has a reverb, effects loop, 2 channels, and it is gutsy!

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this purely for the clean channel after listening to a couple of YouTube reviews, and now after using it extensively for the last couple of weeks, I am completely satisfied and then some. None of my other amps can touch the clarity and high fidelity I get out of this thing. Just brilliant.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Crystal clear and punchy. Great for country, blues, and soft rock. Keep in mind it is a 5w so it does not have a lot of head room. The amp lacks a low end but the clarity makes up for it.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

My main complaints with this amp have to do with the tone stack and the attack on notes.

The treble control does not shape the high end in a pleasing way. When the treble control is at noon, the amp presents a great deal of the very top of the spectrum, giving a "glassy" tone. Reducing the treble control reduces frequencies too far below these upper ones, turning the tone from glassy to muddy, but with no pleasing top end in between. It was impossible for me to get a tone with "meat and definition" at the same time. As the treble control is increased beyond noon, it reduces bass and mids, giving a scooped tone. This can be useful, but I found no use for it in my application. The mid and bass controls were better, but I still did not like the way in which they shaped the signal.

As for the attack, even with the enhanced nature of the high end, the amp lacks "bite", for lack of a better word. The attack seems recessed and does not pop, no matter how the controls are set. The attack could be described as harsh or brittle, but without real definition.

This amp is good for a polished "hi fi" type of tone, but is lacking in warmth, meat, balls, bite, and whatever other meaningless term you care to use to describe sound. I also feel that it is overpriced, considering the build quality and components used.

Comments about Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I purchased the Tubemeister 5 from MF along with one other item; a Tung Sol 12AX7. Both are winners! The Tung Sol opened up the amp and gave it a much better sound than the stock Chinese tube. I have to keep reminding myself that the TM5 is a class A/B amp and therefore responds a little smoother than the 5 watt class A amps that I have. It is definately nice to have a full EQ section instead of just a tone knob or nothing at all. It has A LOT of clean headroom and the lowest gain settings on the drive channel start where the highest gain settings on the clean channel leave off. Very nice! I also like the fact that I'm having a hard time deciding whether I like it better with single coils or humbuckers. It really sounds great with both as a good amp should. The Tubemeister 5 is a great amp that covers everything from Fender clean to, well, Hughes and Kettner!
