OVERVIEW

Perfect for noisy guitars or effects chains.

ISP Technologies introduces the Decimator II, second generation of the Decimator Noise reduction. The Decimator II includes improved performance and innovations so unique that it is covered under two new patents pending for these new improvements.

The Decimator II also features improvements in the expander tracking with the new Linearized Time Vector Processing. This novel improvement provides a more linear release time-constant response for the exponential release curve of the downward expander. While the expander is exponentially increasing expansion and dynamically changing its response to fit the envelope of the input signal, the release response remains linear over a given time period. This increases the smoothness of the release response of the expander and provides the most transparent release response of any noise reduction system available and virtually eliminates any release ripple for incredibly smooth decay of longer sustained notes.

I have a Peavey 6505 that I run in the lead channel with gain at 10, plus an Ibanez tube screamer for an extra treble. For years I had terrible, I mean horrible squealing loud feedback noise. I tried several noise gates foot pedals, replaced tubes, etc until I settled for the Boss noise gate for the foot pedals but still it wasn't enough so I bought a Rocktron hush for the pre amp loop, and it helped but I lost my sound a bit and both noise gates couldn't get rid of the noise and feedback completely- specially when doing stacatto. Yesterday I replaced my Boss noise gate foot pedal for this one and that was it. Playing with the gain at 10 and pumping the volume and nothing, dead quiet!! I even turned the Rocktron hush gate down almost completely and nothing! I totally recommed this pedal for any one using high gain or playing metal. I wish that I have made the change sooner this is the best noise gate pedal you can get.

Before recommending this to a friend I would first try to explain what it does because I didn't really understand and previous reviews don't reflect my experience with this item (so far). I needed something to reduce noise picked up by single coil (Rickenbacker)from electrical outlets in line with neon lights or dimmer switches. This doesn't do that - at all. It is basically a noise gate that reduces normal hiss coming from an amp. Once you strike a string the hiss come right back. Played in a venue recently that even made humbuckers noisy (RF). While the Decimator reduces hiss (while not playing), doesn't do a thing for RF. So over all good product if you want the normal noise put out by an amp minimal between songs. One draw back, the noise seems a little more noticeable when you start playing. Not a must have item for me, but now that I have it, I plan to keep it and use it.

Comments about ISP Technologies Decimator II Pedal:

Most of these reviews have mentioned how well the Decimator deals with "hiss". In my experience, it does nothing to alter the hiss associated with loud amp volume. It does, however, deal quite well with feedback present in my high gain setup.
I play hard rock covers with an Ibanez w/ Dimarzio Super Distortion humbuckers. This I run through a Soldano Decatone half stack. I also employ a Fulltone OCD to boost the front a bit when I want that super-liquid distortion. My setup sounds orgasmic when we play loud but the ear-piercing feedback present between notes has always been problematic.
So far I have plugged the Decimator first in line, right after the guitar. As expected, I found the threshold worked best around 12 o'clock. It's very easy to use- I simply opened it all the way up and gradually dialed it back till the feedback showed up then set accordingly. I have been pleasantly surprised by how intuitive the circuit seems to be. It has not really intruded on the incredible sustain and Satriani- like feedback ( the good kind) that made me fall in love with the Soldano.
It does take a little high end off the tone, had to make an adjustment at the amp for that. It also does not cure the feedback present between or underneath notes while playing. It just clamps everything shut when you are not playing. This is a welcome improvement while playing certain tunes.
Bottom line for me- this is a well built pedal that does what I expected it to do. I was not expecting a magic bullet and adding this unit to my effects chain did involve a bit of compromise in tone. That's ok. My rig is better off with it.

Comments about ISP Technologies Decimator II Pedal:

What I like: Works as advertised, easy to set up, seems very solidly built. I'm keeping it.
What I kind of don't like: Just going through the pedal with it off adds a bit of brightness
thus changing your tone just a wee bit.
Turning the pedal on seems to add back a bit of bass, but the tone and feel of your original signal
is still a wee bit different than if you weren't running through the pedal.
Now, are you going to hear this tiny change at the gig? And if you do, while your'e trying deal with the
bigger problem of too much noise, are you even going to care? I sure didn't.
I put mine in a loop so I could take it completely out of the line if I wanted, and at the gig I wound up
just leaving it in line all night.
I play Blues/Rock with medium gain and p-90's in small clubs where there's lot neon signs and old wiring and this thing solved my problem.

Comments about ISP Technologies Decimator II Pedal:

I originally bought the MXR Smart Gate because I like the quality of the MXR products. I realized almost right away that I should of bought the ISP Decimator II instead. After a few days with the MXR, I decided to order the ISP instead. The MXR is built great and has more controls, but I couldn't get it to work half as good as the easy to use ISP. The ISP is a brand I never heard of until now but from what I can tell, it is the best noise reduction pedal out there. My pedal chain is nearly silent so I prefer to use the Decimator II in my noise gate to quiet down the noise from the overdrive channel. It eliminates 100% of the noise and I still have sustain for around 25-35 seconds. I may buy a second Decimator II in the future just because I'm curious about being able to connect 2 Decimators together so I can have 1 for my pedal board also. The only thing I dislike about the ISP is that it is nearly identical to the Boss Pedals instead of the MXR pedals, but that's just my personal preference.

Comments about ISP Technologies Decimator II Pedal:

I have been using an MXR Noise Gate (Smart Gate M135) for several years. It is effective and works well. I had been thinking about upgrading and based on my research the only contender was the Decimator. I received it several days ago. I tried it in 2 parts of my chain...the very end and just in front of the chorus, delay and echo. I think it does a better job that the MXR. Essentially, it drops the noise almost to zero. I am not using it in the FX loop as I use 2 tube Fender amps to gig - one with and one without the loop. So, I really wanted a setup that worked regardless of the amp. I am a realist about noise and other issues and was skeptical of the hype about the ISP Decimator. I spoke with an engineer at the ISP factory and he gave me a solid explanation of why their product would work well. He said using it outside the FX loop would work very well - perhaps not perfectly - but I just did not want to fiddle around with more cables and setup issues prior to gig. I like simple. And, the outcome in my view is very good. At home, I A/B'd the MXR and the ISP in both locations and there was a clear advantage to the Decimator. So, I think this is a solid product and seems to have a clear advantage over other pedals like the MXR (which is also good). Got a gig next week and will see how it works live...am very optimistic.

I have a JVM410H which is one of the hissiest and obnoxious amps as far as noise goes. I placed this pedal right before my Maxon OD808 and it silenced all the feedback and crackling and hissing this amp spits out. Also you can achieve a tighter and more responsive palm mute with this pedal. It was worth every penny! Your tone will NOT be affected at all. This is what seperates it from the rest.

Tried the Boss NS-2 and had terrible results. I stopped using noise suppressors for awhile because of this. The Decimator II made me a believer. Now I KNOW I'm not the source of that awful buzzing in my in-ears, and I don't have to sacrifice my tone for it.

My only complaints: the finish and the hinge-style switch. I don't find the chrome finish to be appealing at all (it's just a noise supporessor; does it have to look special?) and I would prefer a stomp switch to the Boss-style hinge switch, which in my opinion is an awful design than should never be mimicked. But I'm willing to look past these issues when a pedal delivers the goods like this one does.
