OVERVIEW

2-channel 100W tube guitar amp head with a blue LED backlight for the super-cool factor.

Jet City Amplification's flagship 100HDM Amp Head is two channels of Soldano tone and 100 watts of pure tube power. The Crunch channel has plenty of headroom to deliver clear, bright clean tones and can be driven hard enough to get downright raunchy. The Overdrive channel is the circuit that made Soldano famous. The HDM version also includes the famous Soldano Depth Control, and a metal front baffle, standard. The 100W/50W brings the pain from four 6L6 output tubes in 100W mode, or in 50W mode two tubes are turned off causing the power section to work harder to reach the desired output level, resulting in some pretty hot power amp distortion. Rounding out the feature set is the wire-mounted blue LED, just because it looks cool. This LED is socket-mounted so it can be replaced with other colors, a daisy-chain of several LEDs, or removed entirely.

I'm a studio and perfoming musician. I need reliable gear that sounds great. First of all, the tone is superb. To be completely honest, it doesn't quite get a metal tone without a boost. It gets a very hard rock tone, or maybe classic metal, but for modern music, really any overdrive will do. I've used cheap boosts and that really brings out a lot in this thing. It's pretty darn loud, but with the 50/100 watt swtich, it is easily capable of bedroom volumes. I also like to use an EQ in the effects loop with this thing as well. This amp needs a few things, but as a starting point, you really couldn't get much better for the money. The crunch channel is also nice, you put the gain on 1-2 and you have a really nice clean tone! Its a GREAT head.

A real shame

Absolutely loved the tone. But the transformer made a horrible noise. Exchanged it and the replacement made just as much buzz/hiss/humm without having transformer problems. Sent it back. It's a shame...Read complete review

Comments about Jet City Amplification 100HDM 100W/50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp is based on the circuit of the Soldano Hot Rod 100+ head, with the depth mod included. Designed by the man himself for asian manufacture at a third of the price means boutique level tone at a working man's price.

The strength of this amp is just flat out, pure honest tone. The Soldano circuit design is just fantastic, sounding immense and lively while keeping phenomenal clarity and harmonic complexity in crunch and high gain settings. Clean tones are fine, but it won't win awards. This amp really wants to roar, and boy does it deliver when you let it loose.

Cons? It's a simple amp built on an 80s design, more about pure sound than features. You won't get USB, emulated recording outs, or even independent channel EQ. In that way, it is a real step into the past.

It's important to be aware that these amps ship with fairly poor quality generic tubes. Replace them with common tubes of your personal preference, and the amp comes to life.

Comments about Jet City Amplification 100HDM 100W/50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

For the price, this amp absolutely blows away its competitors when it comes to high gain tones. Lookiong for XLR cab emulated outputs, USB recording, vari-power, re-amping, or a million tweakable controls? If so, then move on to the competitors. But if you are looking for fantastic tone, this is the one.

The amp is designed by Soldano as a low cost clone of a Hot Rod 100+. It's a bit darker and more modern than the famous SLO, and works incredibly well for modern metal tones. Pair it with your favorite Celestion equipped cabs (don't much care for the Jet City/Eminence speakers) and this thing is ready to go head to head with the best. I sold my Mesa Recto and kept this guy instead.

The bad news: It has two settings, rock and metal. The lower gain channel can be backed off to decent clean tones, but nothing special. If you really want quality clean tones, this amp won't really deliver. If you want to rock out, or go for downtuned, extended range aggressive metal, this will do the job nicely.

Comments about Jet City Amplification 100HDM 100W/50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

This amp is very cool. I love the power select of 100 or 50 watt. Clean tone is very usable but let's face it, you don't buy this head for the clean tones. This a very affordable Soldano slo. Seen some reviews that said you can't really get good metal tones but I disagree. This amp totally rocks. I have been playing for well over 30 years and professionally for a good portion of those years. This head holds up to any amp I have ever owned which includes Marshalll, Mesa, Fender and more. You can get a good variety of tones with this head from very bluesy to metal. Most guys who complain about not being to get metal tones from this usually use pedals to get their tone and don't rely on just the amp. I found that all I use with this head is a slight delay and an overdrive used as a clean boost for solos. Depth control is really nice especially when using 2x12 cabs. I would definately recommend this head to anyone. Don't let the made in china thing bother you. This is a very solid great sounding amp!

Comments about Jet City Amplification 100HDM 100W/50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I wanted a tube amp but didn't want to shell out over a grand plus for just a head unit. This 100HDM went on sale for less then half price, I grabbed it right away and I'm glad I did... I bought the JCA48S+ 4X12 slanted cabinet and I'm very delighted with it also.

The 100HDM and JCA48S+ look awesome together, and sound outstanding...

It sucks that I can't crank the 100HDM and I can only put the master volume no further then 2. If I cranked it up to 10, I would blow the windows out of my room and I wouldn't hear the end of it from my parents...

For the few minutes this amp head worked.. it had an old school 70's-80's Marshall tone.. not high gain any means.. just a good pure raw rock tone. It appeared to be nicely designed and heavily built. But it failed within minutes :-( So... I decided to go with a tried and true affordable American made Peavey Tube Amp Head instead. :-) * I only gave it 2 stars because it failed or i would have given it 3 stars.

I tour in a band and have been using the JCA100HDM exclusively for over a year and a half. this amp has never let me down of it's own accord. hook everything up correctly and she'll treat you right. Sounds great, can get heavy, or do light jangly stuff depending on the pickups you're using. the effects loop runs at line-level so be aware of that when choosing any effects you want to run through the loop. the stock tubes aren't the greatest, but for the price you can find this thing for used, replacing the tubes as soon as you get it should be factored into the cost of the amp anyway.

I bought a second one for half price on sale because I love the tone and quietness of this amp when used with my overdrive and Boss noise gate pedal. I own roughly 40 high gain amp heads. this one is in the top 5 due to tone and quietness. it goes from full on to dead silence on the stop of a dime. cant say enough about that!! I had a bad experience w/ my 1st purchase but so glad i gave it another go around!!! if you're on the fence.. don't be... they are Awesome!!!! :-)

I bought it onsale at around half price and now I wish I would have bought 2 more!!! It's Bold.. Light Weight.. Built Tough.. Compact and LOUD!!! Nice balance of preamp gain and EQing range to dial in the right tone to your liking's (but of course.. its Soldano technology!).. I bought a few Jet City JCA22 amps as well.. Unbelievable Tone and Value for the Price. You can't go wrong buying these onsale.. These things Rip! Buy Jet City with Confidence!!!! Btw.. I used a Metal End pedal and a boss noise suppressor with mine to get the Best sound for my liking.

Comments about Jet City Amplification 100HDM 100W/50W Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I've had this head for over a month and wanted to wait until I had some hours with it before posting a review.

For reference, I'm using the head completely stock - no modifications whatsoever - with a Jet City JCA48S 4x12 speaker cabinet.

Two things I can say about this amp: it has plenty of power and plenty of bottom end.

I've tried both power settings and prefer the 100 watt setting.

This amp does not have a clean channel - it's called crunch fro a reason. Even so, I can get decent clean sounds out of it by keeping the gain on the crunch preamp below 2. Going above 2 simply adds more gain, and its all usable.

The preamp setting for the overdrive channel is very sensitive, and once you go half way up it seems to simply add saturation and, perhaps, a bit of compression.

Both master volumes are also somewhat sensitive.

The quality of construction compared to the price is excellent, considering is not a boutique amp made in a small shop. The included foot pedal works fine, as well as all of the controls, switches, and input jacks.

The depth control on this version of the JCA 100 watt heads works very well - something I hope they will consider including in upcoming Jet City amplifier versions.

Overall, I think this is a great value-for-the-money, high powered amp with no unnecessary gimmicks or frills.
