OVERVIEW

Tube amp attenuation taken to the next logical extreme.

Jet City's 100 watt attenuator is an excellent tool for both live and recording. Amp inputs at 4-, 8-, and 16-ohms makes Jettenuator more versatile than other attenuators. The continuous attenuation control lets you set the volume right where you want it. A line-level output is also included with its own level control. Use this to connect Jettenuator to an external power amplifier, or effects processors in professional applications.

Rounding out the feature set is the MicSim output. This balanced, XLR output simulates a microphone in front of a speaker, so you can attenuate your amp and send a great-sounding feed to the house, or your recording mixer. It' like a direct box for your cranked-up tube amp.

FEATURES
  • Multiple impedances
  • Mic simulator
  • Line level out
  • Great for live or studio.

Versatile and precise, this will change the way you feel about attenuation devices.

The one big thing I read about this is that this didn't like lower watt amps and that it ate too much of the highs. I did NOT have those problems. I use an 18 watt EL84 based amp and I have had NO trouble with hearing the highs I need.

The tone attenuated was very good. I did not feel the need to add any highs from the EQ. The presence was fine for me as well.

The DI is as good as any SM57 recording I've done and it sits right in a mix the way I would try to make a mic'd amp sit.

My amp is one that can be sweet and clean at a low volume and can be a monster when cranked with some fairly saturated distortion. I love being able to get that tone at a low volume.

Now listen though, don't expect to FEEL that crankedness the way you can with your 100watter through a 4x12. NO attenuator will replace the air moving and the vibration. So, check your expectations before you buy ANY attenuator. For taming volume and for silent recording though, this is an excellent tool.

I would give five stars but I would like a bypass switch to TOTALLY take this out of the loop. It's not a break-it thing for me though and all I have to do is turn the amp off and re-hook up eveything but, that would make it perfect for me if it had that.

This is the perfect attenuator based on size, features, and price. I bought it because of that & figuring how bad could it sound. Well, it sounds really bad and completely removes the high end sparkle from every amp I tried it with. In fact more-so than ANY modern attenuator I have tried. It does this with various amps. Best sounding for me is the Rivera Rockcrusher, but that is expensive. The Webers with the speaker coils as the attenuator are second to the Rivera. Those are priced more like the Jettenuator. The Jettenuator is better made than the Webers but at least the Webers sound pretty good.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator allows me to crank up the master volume on my amp to get the output tubes performing in the sweet spot of the operating range. By turning back the attenuator knob I can set the volume for the speakers to a level that keeps the peace with my family and band mates without sacrificing tone. I do loose the acoustic coupling between the speakers, strings, pickups and body that all guitar players crave but the electronics are still driving hard and that makes a difference for me playing at low volume. The Mic simulator and Line Level outputs work fine but the tone is a bit lacking, if your looking for a recording interface or direct input to a PA system you probably need to spend more money. I didn't buy it for recording purposes anyway. I like the fact that it can work as a dummy load too. I do some of my own maintenance on my amp so this is a good way to work on it without a speaker connected. This attenuator is smaller and cheaper than other units and very simple to use. Works great for me.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

I purchased this about a month ago to use with my Carvin Legacy, which I run in 50W mode. I was hoping to use it primarily as a power soak so that I could do silent recording using cabinet impulses and I have to say, I was pretty disappointed.

I first tried using it with the "Speaker Out" going into my cab and noticed that it colored the sound a lot. I expected things to sound a little different, but this thing made my amp utterly unrecognizable. The clean channel on my amp, which I always loved for its bell-like clarity and ample headroom, actually broke up and distorted. It sounded so different that I was actually afraid that my tubes were shot! Fortunately, I tried bypassing the Jettenuator and found that my amp sounded fine without it before wasting a bunch of money on new tubes. The dirty channel of the amp was also mangled beyond recognition. All of the clarity and definition in my tone were gone. There was tons of mud and no amount of EQing seemed to fix it.

As disappointed as I was with the sound coming out of my amp's cab, I decided to see if this was still usable to do direct recording. Unfortunately, the answer was again a big "no". I fed the line out to my recording interface and noticed I was getting barely any signal. I cranked the "Line Level" control and still had no luck. I had to turn the input gain on my interface all the way up to get a usable signal. I tried using it along with the Carvin Legacy impulses from Rosen Digital and got pretty much the same garbage tone I was getting through my cab.

I was extremely disappointed by this product and will be returning it. Here's to hoping I can find something else to meet my needs.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

This does exactly what it says on the box. It is very simple to use and it cuts amp volume to a reasonable level while preserving tone. In a small home practice space, it allows me to enjoy my hobby without rattling the windows and annoying my family and neighbors. I can now take full advantage of my amp and fall in love with my guitars all over again. If you are used to playing at an earth shattering volume, then you may feel like something is missing. It was a little shocking at first, but give it a bit of time. You will be able to practice without having your ears ring and the rest of your family will be grateful too. :)

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

Picked up on SDOTD. For the price it was worth it just as a load box. So how does it function as an attenuator? I immediately noticed a change in tone in the form of lost high end but I fully expected some alteration. After all you're taking the output from the amp, sending it to a power resistor, turning most the power into heat and sending the runoff to the speaker. What do you expect? It could have had some bells and whistles to try and restore the tone but as long as it's a passive device you can't add/boost anything such as high end, the only option is to filter/cut out some the of low for a perceived brighter signal. I'm fine with the way it is.

My initial judgment was based on standing next to the amp which leaves too much room for perception to play tricks so I set up a mic and dottled around with it. After going back and listening to the recording I have to say I got some nice crunch that you'd think was captured at window rattling volume. And I noticed I couldn't quite get the same sparkle when not using the attenuator with the amp's volume set lower which is probably the cost of admission for using any attenuator.

If you're willing to accept the above conditions I thinks you'll be happy with the Jettenuator.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

Very attached to blackface Vibrolux Reverb for last 35 years, know it well. Used to have blackface Princeton Reverb for small gigs. This attenuator brings the VR's volume down to that range nicely. Doesn't do the total "whisper" thing but reduces output hugely while retaining the amps response (I use a Gretsch 6120 which feeds back nicely at high decibel sound pressure levels, but that is acoustical response, not a gain-related response; outside the realm of this device). Amp on 2 still sounds clean, 3 starts a bit as expected and 4 is appropriately rich, rarely go over that into full distortion range of amp. I hear those differences at even the lowest volume before device completely kills output. Can play in Living Room... Saw some negative comments re: built-in 3dB reduction - that you can't bypass the device for A-B comparisons. To this I say take 10 seconds and unplug it! Ditto for really really low output - turn the guitar volume knob. In other words this was built to work well in practical applications, the extremes were sacrificed to make it function optimally where it's needed. Kudos to Mr. Soldano who boldly designed it that way.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

It performs as advertised. The speaker level control has microclicks. With this products you are no longer limited to what impedance speaker you can employ. I started by putting a 8 ohm and 16 ohm in parallel, two different cabinets. I've used it as a load box to put a reverb on it post power amp (EL-844s) then into another clean power amp. The possibilities for experimentation greatly expanded here.

Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410. Ibanez semi-hollow with hot humbuckers. While the function of the Jettenuator is very simple, using it requires a small box or other stand behind the amp to place the Jettenuator on since the cable from the DeVille head to the speakers is about 6 inches long. My intention wasn't to dime the amp, only to be able to tame it enough for practical use in smaller venues or for practice. Even with the amp volume on 3 on the clean channel and only a small amount of attenuation (backed off about a quarter turn) I immediately lose all of the trademark Fender clean tone, and get a significant amount of compression. While very different from the amps natural voice, with some EQ tweaking, able to get a very usable, compressed tube tone.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

As a HUGE fan of Mike Soldano, Doug White, and Jet City Amplification I knew it was only a matter of time before I had a Jettenuator. I've used it both for live performance and recording. In live performance situations the FOH/sound guy was thrilled that he didn't have to mess around with mic placement on my cab. The quality of the MicSim is top-notch especially considering the price point. When recording, again it removes the need to mess around with mic placement. You get great tone straight into your DAW. The granularity on the attenuator is an outstanding feature; many of the other models have 6-8 "notch" or specific dB reduction settings. The Jettenuator is almost like having a continuous volume knob for your speaker cabinet. The ability to compensate for resistance mis-matches is a welcome feature; some competitive models require you purchase specific units for specific resistance which gets expensive quickly.

Just remember to read the instructions. This is a 100-watt attenuator. Everyone out there with a Boogie Coliseum, Bugera 1960, Diezel Herbert, Peavey 6500 series, etc., make sure you don't cook your Jettenuator. Better yet, get yourself a Jet City amp and ensure worry-free operation!!

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

One of the features that doesn't get mentioned enough is the ability to "ohm swap" speakers. IOW, I have a Fender Twin @ 4 ohms that I'm able to safely connect to a Celestion Vintage 30 @ 16 ohms. Plug your amp in to the correct input (4, 8, or 16 ohm) and the output doesn't care about the ohms of the cab. And yes, this is a documented feature.

I bought this unit to run my little Vox AC4TVH in to my computer and use a cab IR, but it sounds great micing it up to a Celestion V30 without getting the neighbors upset. Now I use it on all my amps (Marshall, Fender Twin, Epi Valve Jr., etc).

Also, in practice this unit sounds more accurate than my ancient THD Hotplate. Way more versatile too. I don't use the speaker sim, but from what I've experimented with it should work fine in feeding a PA. I've tried other hardware speaker sims before, and this one definitely sounds better than those.

If you're on the fence, this is a great sounding unit at a great price, with more features than the competition.

I've owned several attenuators in my time from THD, Rivera, Dr Z, Carl's Custom, Magus Innovations and Rockman. This attenuator sounds as good or better than most and has additional features that the others didn't have.

All attenuators will affect your tone as you increase the soak. I gave the Jettenuator a 4 out of 5 only because it will still affect the tone slightly even with the attenuation turned all of the way off. It still attenuates at the open settings therfore, the tone does lose treble response.

Ive been using the Jettenuator for almost 2 years now and I've sold all my other attenuators. Works great and is also useful as a load box when working on your amp or direct recording into a speaker sim. Can beat it for the price in my opinion.

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

I bought mine on a SDOD sale for a great price. I was planning to get a Weber, but couldn't resist this deal. The obvious immediate pluses include the ability to match 4/8/16 ohm amp outputs. This makes it so I can use it with any of my amps. The level controlled line out and speaker sim out are nice features that cost extra on some other units or are not available on others. The infinitely variable attenuation control gives you more flexibility than units with preset clicks. To my ears, the resulting tone is good (not great) with reasonable amounts of attenuation. Some loss of highs/sparkle are inherent in this type of resistive attenuator. Your amp has tone controls. Use them. It appears to be solidly constructed and durable, so I expect it will survive road use.

Downsides? What I should have known from reading the specs caught me by surprise. At max volume (9), the device attenuates the output by 3dB. That's half the volume. When I tried it with my 20ish watt 6G3 Deluxe live, it made the amp unusably quiet on stage and I had to unplug it. No one could hear me. But with more powerful amps (50w Marshall Plexi, Trainwreck clone, BFF Bassman, etc), it is extremely effective for knocking these powerful amps down to level that your bandmates and soundman will thank you for but still allow you to get some cooking tube goodness out of them. I played my trainwreck clone in a friends living room party and had a blast with it. Without the Jetenuator, they would have run out of the room screaming!

Comments about Jet City Amplification Jettenuator Amp Power Attenuator:

I've already used this box for two functions: attenuating a Vox AC4c1 so I can get dimed-out, tube-pushing tone at bedroom practice volume, and as an interface to match a 8 ohm 2x10 external speaker cabinet to the 16-ohm-rated Vox combo. I also plan to use it to provide a recording line out from the Vox and other amps that lack one. Farther out I may employ it as an interface between a low wattage tube head and a higher-wattage power amp for gigging. This box does all those things with no fuss or setup angst.

If there is any tonal loss with attenuating the Vox AC4, it's a slight mellowing and spreading of the high end that can otherwise get too spikey. All good for this amp, though with a different, darker setup you might find this a negative. Truly, any high end clipping is far, far more than compensated by the rich harmonics, widened range and heightened pick response from a power section working the way it's meant to. No muffling or choking, and absolutely no detectable noise from the Jettenuator.

I was on the verge of selling off this amp (AC4s are known for not really reaching Voxy chime until they're just about dimed, and even at 4 watts with a decent speaker that's too loud for typical home use), but the Jettenuator, in combination with a tube upgrade to warm up the preamp gain and clean up the power section, has redeemed it for me, letting me really push and tap its best tones even at quiet bedroom volumes.

Tried the attenuator on two different tube amps, Marshall JCM 900 100 Watt and Fender Concert 60 Watt. Device did not work at all, no sound. This was not a restock item, it was brand new. Clearly disappointed. Musician's Friend was their usual helpful selves, return was fast and simple. The one star given was forced, MF would not let me submit the review unless at least one star was chosen. Should have been 0 stars.

I have other attenuators. They all work and muddy the sound a bit but it is for low volume practice and a little EQ'ing works well. For the price (MF SDOTD) and range of amp wattage and ohms built into this package combined with small size makes it a great deal.
