OVERVIEW

Voted 2004 Guitar Player Magazine's Editor's Pick Award.

Keeley's most popular pedal, the Keeley compressor has become an industry standard for stomp box compression. The sound will inspire, and your music will flow freely-just plug the compressor pedal in and let your head, heart, and fingers fly. The sound quality of the Keeley compressor is rarely heard in the stompbox arena and is only seen in very expensive rackmount or tube equipment.

It is a true audiophile and studio-grade compressor, with exotic rackmount-quality in a stomp box. The Keeley compressor pedal ships with the 9V DC jack at the top end of the guitar pedal and use the same type of power supply used by nearly all guitar effect manufacturers.

Internal Attack Control
The compressor pedal has an Internal Attack control, designed for bass players with high-output active pickups or active pedal boards with buffers.

Sensitivity Control
The Keeley compressor pedal also has an Input Sensitivity Control, meaning you can use this in your studio to run keyboards, drum machines, drum mics, even master recordings and other line-level uses. You'll raise your signal to a new level of sonic awesomeness.

True bypass switching circuit
True bypass means that when the effect is off your guitar tone will not be affected at all. The true bypass circuit makes sure you have absolutely no tone loss or signal reduction through the compressor pedal in the off/bypass mode.

Triple-pole double-throw switch
This switch makes sure you have absolutely no tone loss or signal reduction through the Keeley 4-knob compressor even in the off mode. Other compressors use a cheap switch and design that runs down your signal even when off or if the battery goes weak.

The Sustain Control
The 9 O'clock position should be barely noticeable. It will just take out really loud sudden peaks, this is great for protecting your speakers and the like. The 12 O'clock position provides the right presence for using the Keeley compressor pedal continuously while performing. The 3 O'clock position is great for solos. It really adds some cool effects to your playing dynamics. Only when really cranked do you get the pluck sound of your pick emphasized.

Tone-tested components
The Keeley compressor effect has nothing but tone-tested components and has true bypass switching. Effect switching incorporates a triple pole-double throw switch. You will have clean unaffected sound when in the bypass mode, with an LED for effect indication. Metal film resistors and capacitors ensure the cleanest compressor on the market. Hand matched transistors to less than 1% tolerance ensure you get a perfectly compressed signal, no chance for unwanted distortions. For those wanting a better tone than that of Trey Anastasio from Phish or David Gilmore of Pink Floyd or the Edge of U2 this is it.

Power supply
The DC jack is the standard type fitting just about every power supply out there. The Voodoo Labs Pedal Power, MXR DC Brick, Boss, Ibanez, etc. power supplies work perfectly with the compressor

Keeley's compressors are completely hand built and tested to ensure that there are no failures. The guitar pedal is "semi-abused" to make sure there is nothing but bliss when you install your new compressor. Since each compressor pedal is hand made there might be small differences as improvements are made. Every attempt is made to make sure your Keeley pedal looks perfect and sounds better than you imagined.

I use it with my Jetglo Rickenbacker 330 6 through my 1978 silverface Deluxe Reverb and nothing else in between... Listen to me every body, this is the first compressor I use that is dead quiet!... (Please sorry my english Im from South america).... And the sound is so pure, I can hear the best of my beloved Rickenbacker voice without weird coloration . After that I conect in chain first the compressor, distortion Boss ce2, ehx deluxe memory man (very old like me) and oh my lord Satan!..this thing sound even better!!...and no noise at all. I really think the people who said this is noisy dont have any idea of have to use a compressor correctly. Mine is the 2 knob version and with my old Ibanez Cp9 are my pride and joy in the Compressor pedals kingdom... Run to Buy one

I bought this several years ago. I have always found it to be so subtle that I was not sure what was the point. I have another compressor on my board that I find to be quieter and more robust (visual sound Comp 66). The time may be coming to get rid of this, it does work OK, but for a gigging player it is a pain to adjust and it just lacks any real effect...maybe for recording it works?? The real problems with this unit are:
1. The pots have gotten very noisy (also true with pots on a moded BD-2 from keeley i have but that might be the Boss pots; and BTW I am not knocked over by the mod on the BD-2...pretty minimal change/improvement in a live environment)
2. It died after 2 yrs and I had to get it repaired at my cost
3. The pedal switch is pretty stiff and can be hard to hit when you are doing that one foot dance at a show!
4. It is way too pricey for the durability and the utility.
5. I hate the blue light as it is so bright I cannot see the knobs to adjust them on a dark stage floor.
So I know everyone loves this thing...I don't hate it, I just do not see what is so great about it. My choice would be a Visual Sound compressor, or just go with the Boss, in a noisy place it's all the same, and you got 180 extra in your pocket!! So I know lots disagree…..flame away…I can take it!

4 knob keeley compressor, too noisy.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

we average about three shows a month for the last 10 years. usually in small bars and restaurants. this pedal makes a loud hisssing noise. i sent it back to keekey and they said that the noise was normal. i run it as the first pedal in my string. as you dial up the level or the compression you also dial up hiss. i seldom have more than 4 effects on the stage. mostly blues, no super high gain. usually playing through small 10 to 15 watt amps. wish it was more quiet.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This should be no surprise, but Keeley is the Cadillac of compressors. Just adds to and enhances your tone - doesn't get in the way. I never turn it off. This replaced an MXR Custom Comp. MXR is nice, but the Keeley just sounded better to me. I recommend the four knob version (over the two knob one) for the ease of adjustment, without having to take the back off of the unit, as required on the two knob version. Yes, it is expensive, but highly recommended if you are serious about great tone.

If you could only buy 1 pedal in your life, buy this one!

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Before you buy anything, always try it out first. Go to your music store that carries this pedal, and try it out. Don't buy anything based on our opinions. You need to be happy with what you hear. I personally will always have this pedal in the "ON" position. This is the best pedal I have ever had. I purshased the Boss Compressor pedal several times over the years, and always wound up taking it back, because it would take away from your playing dynamics.....like how hard you strike the string. It would even everything out, (monotone) and take the dynamic away. That is where this pedal shines. You get the sustain, and all the other options, and keeps your dynamics.
This Keeley is increadable. You have 4 knobs, as you can read about in the previous reviews, and see in the picture. They allow you to control and fine tune your sustain, attack, clipping and level. What you dial in, is what will control your sound, and sustain.
Quality all the way. Solid, nice knobs that are plainly labeled. All metal, and made here in the U.S. of A. Solid box (metal), and beautiful. All hand wired. I love the bright blue "on" light. I called Keeley to ask a few questions, and the reps. know their product, and are very patient, polite, and treat you with that feeling of appreciateing your business.
The reason I gave it a very high rating, is because the pedal is worth it! When you purchase a product, and pay a chunk of change, you expect your moneys worth. You will get your moneys worth from this pedal. It is worth every penny. I have been playing for 47 yrs. This pedal enhanses your sound, and gives you full control.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Adds great sustain for those distortion/high gain leads and also fantastic punch for the funky cleans (think Red Hot Chili Peppers). I leave this pedal on more than it is off. I would say that it is vital for my set up.
Without a doubt, this the best compressor pedal I've used. The four knobs provide the necessary options for your guitar compression. I love how the signal breaks into a sweet warm sounding distortion with the Level knob turned past the 1 o'clock range. This is an incredible buy.
Extroardinarily well-built, sturdy, and it is also smaller than a Boss pedal.
This is more expensive than other compressor pedals on the market but the sound quality is worth the buy. I did a comparison with my Boss CS-3 compressor and there is a conspicuous difference in sound quality.

        Keeley Is The Real Deal...

        By Johnny Switchblade

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

If you want the cleanest, sweetest, fullest, roundest sounding compressor out there, but don't want to get some rack-mpunted monstrosisty, this is your pedal. You won't be disappointed, and I think the high price is warranted by the results you get. Buy one!
The Keeley 4-knob Compressor is truly great, almost noiseless unless you turn all the controls on full, and even then it's fairly quiet. The true bypass is excellent, and with the level control you can match the volume of the pedal to your own volume very easily. With the 'Sustain' dialed all the way off (left), it sustains plenty, with it all the way up (right), your notes will last indefinitely... without any distortion. It sounds like a clean note that's about to feedback at any time, basically... wonderful sweet tone, and a big improvement over anything else I've used.
Extremely well-made, but small enough to fit almost anywhere. I'm a sucker for metallic silver, anyway. lol The knobs are extremly tough and don't move after you've set them, without being stiff. Even though the footswitch is mechanical instead of electronic, it turns on and off noiselessly as well.
Well worth the bucks. With stomp boxes, you almost always get what you pay for. I was using the bottom-of-the-line Danelectro 'Suf 'n' Turf' compressor before this, which I think cost all of 20 clams. And it was incredibly noisy and there was little you could do with the controls. So, rather than just get the next-cheapest one, I took a friend's advice and went to the top-of-the-line Compressor, and this is it. This is no overpriced boutique pedal that looks flashy but basically does no more than a Boss pedal would. This is the Real McKeeley. If it can make me sound like Chet Atkins, think of what it might do for you....

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is the best Compressor pedal I've owned. If you are searching for a compressor pedal, don't look further, this is the one. You could buy a lot of compressor pedals for half or less than half the price of this one, but none will be as good as this one, it's worth it. I've learned that in guitar pedals, most of the times, you get what you paid for, is better to save a little and buy good-quality pedals. And Keeley's customer service is the best!

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play a Telecaster American Deluxe through a Vox AC15 in a live setting every other week for about 400 people at our church. I have been pretty happy with the sound of the tube amp and a few pedals. I've just been stacking a custom Drive/Fuzz with a second Drive/Boost pedal, into a Line 6 Delay, using the modded spring 'verb and tremolo of the amp. Very basic. But when I would try to go clean the sound was thin and didn't have much push or sustain.
A friend of mine recommended compression so I started shopping and researching. I always try to go high-end, because you get what you pay for in gear. After reading all the reviews and watching tons of videos it was a toss-up between this and the Electro-Harmonix tube Black Finger compressor. I flipped a coin and went with the Keeley. I put it in line after my rhythm Drive, just before my Lead Drive pedal and Delay and couldn't be happier. The sound stays big when I cut the drives and the clean leads and chords are just as thick as I need them to be with excellent sustain. I found a setting that works beautifully with my single coils and now I just leave it on all the time.
Well worth the money to get the sound I wanted.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've owned numerous compressors, this unit sounds good and is built with quality, easy to change batteries.

I recently bought a Demeter Compressor, it broke within 2 weeks with little use, even when it worked, didn't compare to the Keeley, it was also poorly built compared to the Keeley, not user friendly changing batteries, the plate with the screw holes didn't line up properly.

Another compressor to avoid, the overrated and overpriced Carl Martin Compress.....

I've own both the 2 & 4 Knob Keeleys, both are worth the price.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Like one of the other reviewer, I don't understand all the excitement about this pedal. IMHO, it does extremely well with clean tones but it is really noisy with higher gain.
I thought maybe I got a bad one but the light burned out after about a month and I sent it back to Keeley and asked them to check out the noise when they fixed the light. They said that they put in another wire to limit radio frequency problems and told me it was working fine. When I got it back, I felt it was worse so I sent it back again and I think they replaced the whole board and took out the extra wire. It was still as noisy as it was in the beginning when I got it back the second time but I was tired of messing with it at that point so I just use it with clean tones now.
The service people at Keeley are very friendly and were ready to help get the pedal fixed right away but I think the design of this pedal just isn't for me.
            I wouldn't buy another one.

              Very please with it.
I sold my Keeley 2-Knob and got this upgraded version, the extra contols shape your tone voicing.

Keeley is the best compressor I've owned and I've owned many, stay away from the Carl Martin
              Compressor, overrated and overpriced....

I'm using it with a '60 Fender Esquire Custom with a Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special....
I've only owned it a few weeks, if it's anything like the 2-knob, it will last a long time.
They hold their resale value, look on Ebay.

First let me say I gave 2 stars because the Keeley 4 knob sounds pretty good with my bass. Sounds terrible with any of my guitars but that's a subjective thing- here's why I wouldn't buy again or recommend this compresser. First it is NOT durable enough for stage use. Parts fall off mine all the time. The little stick on feet and most annoyingly the in/ out jacks and grommets. The input jack comes out almost every time I use the thing. Second the blue indicator light. I get the impression the folks at Keeley think the light's pretty cool- it is not. It's so bright that on a dark stage it's blinding. You actually have to cover it and pick the box up to make adjustments. Careful though- the jacks will fall out. The bottom line is I use this only in my home studio and only when I'm in the mood to continually piece it back together. For stage work I've gone back to using the comp I bought in 1988. It is indestructable- the 4 knob is not. For bass I'm using a green limiter I bought on this site as an under 10 Stupid Deal. It also is indestructable. Bottom line- pass on the Keeley and get something with a reputation for durability and tone. You'll probably save a little in the process.

I've tried pretty much every compressor out there, and none of them even come close to the Keeley. This pedal is amazing! Very heavy duty and great quality. Buy it, I promise you'll love it!

It's every compressor pedal on the market and then some. You can make it sound like whatever you want it to sound like. Enough said.
                Worth the money.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was in the market for a stomp-box compressor for months and finally settled on Robert Keeley's masterpiece. If you've never considered adding this compressor to your board, you don't know what you're missing. This pedal didn't compromise my tone at all and evened out my signal perfectly.I play a lot of "jam-band" style lead guitar and this brings each note out much like a good recording studio would. For overdriven lead, I recommened putting it after your overdrive (which the manuel recommends) and your notes sing with sustain. I've never played the Keeley 2-dial compressor but I understand this is sonically identical. The only difference is that the attack and clipping controls are internal on the 2-dial version whereas they are external on this model. For 30 extra bucks, I'll take the added convenience. This guy is a little pricey but considering you're getting arguably the best compact compressor on the market, made from the finest ingredients, it's worth it.

Comments about Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This thing is dominant: not sure I have ever played a better compressor.I have had an early 80's Square button Ibanez Compressor 2 on my board since 1999 and wanted to replace it just to keep it safe. Tried a Dyna Comp and a Soul preacher. Then I got this. This is the only compressor you would ever need, any style of music and any compression needs can be met.Runs clean and quiet. Huge amount of features (compared to your normal volume and sustain comps)Worth leaving on almost all the time.Makes clean tones huge, and will add sustain to your drive.Love it, never selling it, never leaving my board.
