Keeley

A studio-grade compressor in a guitar stompbox.

The Keeley Compressor pedal is built using tone-tested components and true bypass switching for a clean, unaffected sound when the pedal is off. Metal film resistors and capacitors ensure the cleanest compressor on the market. Hand-matched transistors to less than 1% tolerance ensures you get a perfectly compressed signal, no chance for unwanted distortions.

The Keeley Compressor is the new standard for guitar compression. It won the Editor's Pick Award from Guitar Player Magazine and, most recently, the Reader's Choice Award for the stompbox category. It features an internal attack control to make it suitable for high-output active basses. It also features an input sensitivity control which allows it to be used in the studio for keyboards, drum machines, for mastering, and other line-level uses.

Low current draw, just 5mA. Uses a standard 9V DC battery and has an AC adapter connection.

Features

  • Its transistors are matched for gain (Hfe) within 1%
  • True bypass
  • Metal film resistors and capacitors
  • Internal attack control

Don't get me wrong, a very, very good compressor, but for the price? I'll take the Barber Tone Press over this any day, regardless of price. This pedal is great, insanely transparent. Helps give much greater clarity to complex chords. Sustain wise, it's great for humbuckers, but is less than impressive with single coils. All in all, very, very good, I just don't think it's good enough to justify the price. There are better compressor's out there for less.Note: This will not make you sound like Trey.

I previously have used a Boss CS3 compressor and felt I wanted to try the Keeley Compressor(I bought two of these), having heard nothing but great things about the sound produced by this pedal. Here is what I did not hear, prior to buying one.#1. They use a four screw, bottom plate access cover to get to the battery and two internal pot adjustments (intensity/gain and attack).I personally do not like to use external power supplies, so accessing the battery would have been an issue for me.#2. Why would anyone put two pot adjustments, inside the box, which requires a screwdriver to make the adjustments? I later found they do sell the four knob compressor pedal .#3. The battery is not secured in any way, just happens to sit in the space left over. No padding to prevent it from bouncing around....should you need to take the pedal anywhere. At least a little foam could have been used.I used the pedal for less than an hour and decided it was not worth the $. I have since purchased two Boss CS3's as well as a few other Boss pedals, and a pedal board, with all the money left over. IMO, Ibanez pedals have the easiest battery compartment access of any I have owned. Had the Keeley pedal offered something similar, I may have kept their pedals. IMO, it was just not worth spending for two Keeley compressors, just to have all four pot controls on the outside of the box, where IMO, they belong.

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

One word: TONE. This pedal will take all of the best parts of your sound and push it even farther. It levels out the softness of single notes, will at the same time taming the wildness of hard strumming. This is a must have for studio work or even controlled gigs. I have a relatively standard ambient rig and now with this pedal my swells have sparkle like never before. Save your money and get this pedal, you will not regret it.

        Unbelievable pedal

        By Arthur Bielski

        from Chicago

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

This is the best pedal you can have on your board for rythm work. Absolutely no noise, huge sustain, and just amazing tone. People were telling me how slight compression pedals are in the tone difference and that you need to really have a great ear to notice. Nonesense. The tone is immediately recognized even by my intermediate level ear. Completely cleans up chord work and brightens them up something fierce. On single note play the sustain is simply amazing. I was thinking about getting a Les Paul for its reknown sustain, but thats out the window now. I can play just about anything I want with my PRS 513, and I can even get that warm sustain through this pedal.

It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. The 4 knob feels like a big tweaking hastle, this one is perfect as she is.
        Incredible tone.

        Keeley Makes the Best Pedals!

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

If something ever happened to my Keeley, I would buy another one immediately.
I spent a lot of hours studying up on compression pedals and finally chose the Keeley 2-knob compressor. One of the best purchases I've made in a long time. It added the sustain I was looking for in a clean sound. In fact, I leave it on all of the time during the shows.
Seems to be well built. I've had it for over a year with no problems experienced.
A little pricey, but in my opinion, well worth it to acquire the tone I was looking for.

        How Could I Play Before??

        By J.R.L.

        from Woodstock, NY

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

I think this is the most useful basic sound-driving device an engineer could build for a guitar player. I use this compressor to drive my effects chain. It tightly controls the level fed to the fx and the amp, creates a smooth sustain, and pleasantly fattens the sound of the instrument while almost paradoxically throttling level. The battery lasts a long time. I love this device.

        The Best!

        By 505Coyote-myzPu

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this magic box? I got the limited edition turquoise colored one. The first one I got was defective, but a hassle-free exchange for a new one at my local music store took care of that. The only gripe I have about this thing is that it makes some serious noise when I turn it on, but that's probably because I have it after my 2 ODs (TS9 with the AnalogMan Classic and Silver mods and Fulldrive 2, both running at 12 volts). I'm positive this is not the pedal's fault. That being said, this thing is amazing. I keep the sustain cranked all the way and the level at about 11:00, since I only use it for country pickin' and full blown soloing. With these settings and this placement in my signal chain, It makes my soloing come alive. If you use this for soloing, I highly recommend turning the sustain all the way up, because this will let your sustained notes fade flawlessly into feedback a la Trey Anastasio.

        compress to impress

        By Lance Pentland

        from Deer Lodge Montana

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

HOT out of the box! Had to remove back cover to adjust input and attack trim pots. My PRS pickups were a little to hot for factory settings. These minor adjustments are very necessary to match your guitars pickups output. Comparing to boss and comp nova, all three compressor's are different, but useful depending on style and feel your looking for. There are so many compressors on the market today that claim to exceed other competitors, but these three are my favorites at this time. I'm usually not a compressor user for I don't like my dynamics messed with, so keeley and t rex comp nova are very transparent to keep me intrigged.

        The best, but pricey.

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

If you are a serious player who knows he or she wants a compressor, this is the one to buy. Spending the extra $100 for the Keeley is worth it to get the best.Having said that, if you are hobbyist just trying out different pedals to see what they do, I would put this one toward the end of your "to-buy" list. This compressor's effect on tone and sustain is pretty modest. It basically: 1) gives your tone a more "recorded/produced" quality; 2) adds a modest level of sustain; and 3) reduces the dynamic range of the guitar, which is a nice effect for hobbyists with an unsteady picking hand. The downside is that it does limit your dynamic range and it removes the "raw" sound of the guitar.Bottom line: this Keeley is a good tool for advanced players, but most hobbyists should save their money.

        Big money, little box

        By Tone Obsessed

        from York, PA (nowhere)

Comments about Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal:

There's quite a bit of hype surrounding this pedal, a lot of which isn't entirely justified. If you're looking for a boost/sustainer tone tool this is a good box which does the job with a minimal amount of noise, provided you don't crank it all the way up. As an effect that actually squashes your sigal and gives you that squishy tone that sounds like a bonafide studio style compressor this box from Keeley really doesn't deliver the goods (for this, check out the EHX White Finger or, on the mildier side, the Joemeek Floor Q). If your looking for a Ross clone the Keeley is probably the best out there. On the down side, it's over-priced and a one trick pony, although admittedly it does that one trick pretty well.
