Keeley

Keeley's take on a classic overdrive tone.

The Red Dirt overdrive began from a quest to find the perfect classic drive sound while also offering new levels of sonic versatility to satisfy a wider range of musical styles. Founder and head engineer Robert Keeley took this idea and combined the great sounds found within his original “Mod Plus” and “Baked” modified pedals and added refinements found exclusively in his custom pedal line. By incorporating these tones along with the Keeley standard of U.S.A. hand-built quality using premium components, the Red Dirt overdrive aims to become an indispensable part of any pedal chain.

Comments about Keeley Red Dirt Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've searched high and low for the best 808 style overdrive. Ibanez, Maxon, JHS, Analogman, Fulltone, the list is endless in terms of all of the companies out there that claim to make the best 808/TubeScreamer available. Adjustable mid range, sub-miniature tube boost, 9 vs. 18 volts, mid range control, low boost/clipping switch, the options are immense and I don't have it in me to buy all of them, only to find out most of them aren't worth my time or my money, so I went with the name that is synomous with not taking away, but adding to the sound and greatness of the best and most user-friendly overdrive in the world, the 808. I initially got in touch with Keeley to mod my 808, but I figured, between shipping my Maxon OD808 twice, true-bypass switching, doing two mods, and hoping for the best, why not buy the Red Dirt for that price? It IS the OD808, but better, with the Plus/Baked mods built in, built of the best components available, with true bypass switching. I went for it, and I love it. I'll run it with everything, boosting low wattage blues amps, or adding amazing gain to a big master volume tube amp, and lastly, using it as a clean boost in front of a 100 watt high gain head for a tight, dynamic, and articulate high gain distortion.

It does it all, it does it better, all while not sucking the low end, and boosting the mid range of your tone to unbearable levels. It also gives you the perfect amount of compression.

Go with Keeley. I bought my pedal straight from the company via e-mail...Initially the Katana upon their recommendation for a clean boost...When it didn't work for what I was doing, they told me, no problem, send it back, we'll get you what you initially inquired about, the Red Dirt, and I haven't looking back. I run two in my rig with my Soldano SLO-100. One (always on) as a clean boost in the Baked position, one after that as a solo boost in the Plus position...Ridiculous.

    Get it.

Comments about Keeley Red Dirt Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Keeley Red Dirt is another entry into a big TS-9 market. Yet this super effect passes the herd up with it's options such as the High/Lo switch and a EQ that really works. I play out weekly and have found my use of the Red Dirt to be on the Lo side and as a mild boost. This pedal cuts the mix and responds to volume adjustments. Keeley has always been known as the mod king on TS-9 and all his years of work went into this tone monster. It can be a cleaner boost and a soaring lead tone when pushing some air with your amp. I think this is here to stay and most folks who dig making great music will appreciate Keeley's Red Dirt.

Comments about Keeley Red Dirt Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Having again developed a recent need for the Tube Screamer sound, I wanted to avoid returning the Ibanez/Maxon products I've once owned. It's too much like returning from a journey by retracing one's exact steps. Enter Keeley's Red Dirt. A red tube screamer? Intriguing. (I like to like the way my pedals look, I will admit.) Cool color and clever name aside, I must dedicate my first MF review to this impressive overdrive. No one any longer need mention that there are A LOT of ODs to choose from. On one hand, it's nice to have such a healthy selection; on the other hand, a man can only sit in one chair at a time (unless they're stacked), so at some point a decision has to be made. I'm pleased with mine. The Red Dirt's construction is solid, its color is a welcomed change of pace, but its tone is TONE. In pedal-speak, that's a now very-overused term, but at the end of the day, that's what I'm chasing, and I LOVE the Red Dirt's range of tones, character of grit, and amount of boost. It's transparent enough to allow my single coil Strat to ring through, but it's tube-like enough to push my VERY clean Victoria into a 3D bombardment of complex character. As a regional, touring musician, I need to anticipate at home and at practice what I will be delivering live; the Red Dirt is true to its purpose in all these places. In fact, during some recent overdubs at the studio, I used the Red Dirt, a borrowed Tele, a metal slide, and LOUD Vox AC 30 to create takes that were very exciting. I wrote Keeley Electronics, pretty much deliberating if I should get another, and their sound advice was that I might want to try the Luna II, which is what I'm reviewing next. But if you're wanting your first Tube Screamer pedal, this is such a great place to start. And if you need another, like I did, the Red Dirt provides everything and more. I don't anticipate needing to trade, sell, flip, or shelve the Red Dirt... at all.
